I tried the LG UP870, and despite being $150 less (as of March 2018), this is a far superior player. The X800 looked okay too, but with Dolby Vision planned for the summer, this seemed the best option of the two. It’s odd Sony go with a lower product number with a newer player, but the X700 appears to be the new X800. Region free - it works well. DVD is always region free, and Blu Ray requires pressing colors on the remote (instructions are included with the player). 4K - it’s my first experience with 4K so cant really comment vs other 4K, but specs wise this looks like it will be great and future proof for a while. Only downside to this player is the remote. It’s very cheap and light. Oddly the remote (RMT-B119A) that came with my old Sony S5100 works fine with this player, and it feels so much better, so the old remote is now with the X700, and the new one is with the old S5100.. Update 2 months on: The player is still holding up very well. No issues at all. Plays everything I throw at it. Unlike my old Sony Blu Ray player with USB, this one doesn’t keep the USB drive active all the time so if you have a regular non-SSD USB drive, it will save your drive by it not being on all the time. When you want to use the USB, just select it on the home screen and it’ll start the USB up again. Seems there’s a sleep timer to save the connected drive from being on when it doesn’t need to be which is nice. SSD HDDs through USB work great but you really don’t need them - over USB 3.0 4K/2160p video files from a regular external HDD play perfectly well. Update 6/6/18: Software update M43.R.0175 out either yesterday or today has Dolby Vision now.

I bought this to replace my Oppo BDP-103D Blu Ray player thinking that it had a problem with decoding DTS. So I wanted another region free player but also wanted to upgrade to the 4K UHD since I now have a TV that supports that. I have not had much time to play with it until this weekend. My only issue and it is a big one for me is it will not decode HD Master DTS X it drops down to just 5.1 channel. I have a Blu Ray concert disk that is by far my favorite, David Gilmore live from Pompeii. It is recorded in HD Master DTS X 7.1 and will just blow your mind on a good A/V system. So I ended up setting up my Oppo again and it is fine and still the standard to beat for audio in my mind. Other than that the Sony has a great picture, just watched Dead Pool 2 last night in 4K UHD no complaints. Would still highly recommend this player.

Excellent product. It has exceeded my expectations both in terms of video and audio. Buy this product from Bombay Electronics - Region Free - 220 volts // 50/60 Hz and I had no problem. It works wonders. Highly recommended.

It plays everything from DVD > Blu-ray > 4K from all regions. Just make sure your whole setup supports Blu-ray / 4K + HDMI cable.

Multi System Region Free Blu Ray Player 220Vac use in my country. Updated firmware out of the box. No Dolby Vision firmware update yet. Have try 8GB MicroSD with USB2.0 adapter, USB3.0 4TB HDD play 1080p, 3D, 4K .mkv videos, Multi Region Blu Ray & DVD, DVD-DL, VCD, CD & mp3 songs all OK no problem. Disc tray not noisy. Dont have 4K TV so can not comment only try on Full HD TV pictures & colours already very nice. Anyone try out USB3.0 SSD on this player?

To date it works great with 3D movies, which is why I purchased it. I do not have any 4K movies yet. I have one on order but it won’t be here until Aug 7 (Alita: Battle Angel 4K/3D combo) so I won’t know how well that works till then. That may or may not be an issue for me as I am MUCH more interested in how well it works with 3D and to date it better than even my Sony 6500 that I purchased from Bombay a few years ago and love. I purchased the multi-region player because 99% of the movies I purchase are from the UK and/or Germany. 3D is still very big there and 3D Steelbooks abound.

Didnt play Japanese cartoon DVDs. They oddly said no device can play Japanese DVDs because they didnt use region codes. Weird. But they did quickly refund the purchase
