I bought a 55" Ultra HD TV for my son and it wasnt long before my friends informed me that his regular, cheap ol Blu-ray player was not going to be capable of delivering a clear picture with his regular DVDs. I researched and learned about "upscaling." I finally decided on buying this Sony BDP-S6500 Updated Multi-Region Zone Free Blu-ray DVD Player and am quite happy with it. Blu-ray DVDs are crystal clear, of COURSE, but even regular DVDs of very old movies (like "The Ugly Dachshund" from waaay back in the 1960s) are extraordinarily clear. I cant comment on any of its MANY features because we are using it strictly as a DVD player. I have not even connected it to our wi-fi. But because it gives us a beautiful and clear picture on ALL our DVDs I am very happy that I bought it.

Nice little player and has all the features that I was looking for including slow/fast motion forward/reverse and single-frame forward/reverse and the remote has separate pause and play buttons. Its internet browsing capability leaves much to be desired but it does work. It has very little memory so some web pages may cause it to lock up. The only way to delete search text is to reset the unit (select setup then select clear personal information). The clear history function only clears the web history and not the search text. Region Free works fine (just remember to press the appropriate colored button on the remote for the region you want to play.

While the product description infers otherwise (i.e., calling this an "upgraded" DVD player with "2K/4K upscaling for use with ultra HD TVs...") this is not a 4K DVD player. It will not recognize a 4K disk at all. Sonys tech support staff confirmed this, and told me to just play the Blu-Ray disk. I played the Blu-Ray disk and the picture is not only not 4K (or "nearly 4K"), but the Blu-Ray picture is not particularly good either. (I have a new ultra HD 4K TV.) Sonys tech support suggested that if I want 4K, then they referred me to two other models...

I live in Europe and wanted a region free player for both Blu-ray discs and DVDs and the Sony does the job perfectly! Easy installation, great picture and sound. Manual selection of Blu-ray region with the colored buttons on the remote and fully automatic region selection for DVDs. The player are delivered with a US power adaptor which i had to change. I already had a suitable one so that was not a problem. Theres two options: you will either need a socket adaptor from US to the type used in your country, or you can as i did buy a new power adaptor, but beware, it must have enough power and the right voltage, i used a 12V with 1,5A max and sat the correct polarity, on mine it was + on the center. Be aware! If you do something wrong here you might harm the player and lose your warranty. The player is very small and light, but its a Sony so im sure the quality is good but Blu-ray discs spin at a high speed and therefore the player will vibrate and make some noise. I put the player on three small soft rubber feet made for compact shelf speakers and that made a big difference! Five stars if it were heavier built and more quiet. Still, a very good product, i recommend the Sony BDP-S6500!

Very easy installation - only the wall plug and the HDMI cable (which is included) to hook up. Just follow the short instruction booklet and you will be up and running in no time at all. Went right to the setup button and changed any setting that I needed to, and mostly just clicked the couple of buttons needed to hook the unit up to my wireless which worked perfectly. The only issue that i had was running the sound through my stereo system - and that had nothing to do with the Sony player, but my older stereo receiver which did not have any HDMI hookups. Used my own digital cord and plugged it into the Sony unit and once I fiddled around with the right stereo receiver settings to find the right place to plug the cord into, worked just fine. Well worth the price - DVDs from the UK played just by loading then in the tray. Have not tried the other regions for Blu-ray disks, but see no reason they would not work as well.

I cannot get it to play "ACTUAL" 4k movies. Unit doesnt recognize them ( at least not mine). Unit was a lot smaller than I had anticipated. The upscaling looks fantastic. I have Sony 75" XBR 4k TV and the Blurays I have played all have incredible resolution, clarity and contrast. Even 3 feet away no pixels are visible to my eyes. Movies load much faster than on a PS3. Wifi works well too.

This product from Sony is fabulous. Havent had nothing yet it couldnt play. I had a DVD /Blu Ray player from Samsung before I had this one. They dont have a multi region player like Sony. It couldnt compare to the Sony. Dont hold a candle to it. I dont really understand why a high tech company wouldnt have top of the art multi player like Sony but they dont. Thats why from now on Sony has my business.I never should have tried anything else. Well Sony lesson learned. Great job and recommend you to anyone.

Cheap construction. The remote control is not intuitive at all, and the buttons dont depress cleanly or reliably. The machine takes quite a while to start up, even in quick-start mode. My biggest annoyance, however, is that it turns off -- completely off -- whenever the video is paused for 20 minutes. When I come back, I must restart the video as if Id removed the disc. That is, I have to wait for the several FBI warnings, navigate through the screens, and manually find the place where Id left off watching the program. In practice, this means that if I get up to make tea, I cant stop and chat with my friend for a few minutes. "Sorry. I have to get back to my DVD player so that it doesnt shut off." According to the manual, there is no way to change or bypass the auto-off "feature." Sonys response to the concern raised on that site shows their complete disregard for customers. I will never buy a Sony product again. (Like an idiot, I used to regard both Sears and Sony as reputable companies. No more.)

In my experience this player has a lot of bugs from updating firmware to which Blu Rays it will play and wont play. Initially it worked fine for Region A and B blu-rays but now will not recognize any Region B discs. I wasted 200.00 dollars on this. I could kick myself so learn from my mistake move on to another player and company. Totally dissatisfied!
