Overall this is an excellent printer. Just a couple things that kept me from giving it five stars. We use this as a home office printer. Our inket just couldnt keep up. This printer prints very fast and can handle large print jobs. The 733 model can scan both sides of a page at the same time, so in one pass you can get two sided copies. The 731 model does not have a two sided scanner. I like that this printer seems to be built better. Most printers nowadays seem flimsy and likely to break every time you pull out the paper tray. Here is what I dont like so much: I had to call Canon to get the driver installed on my mac. I did everything right, but apparently in not the right order, so it didnt work. Im surprised at this, since with a mac I almost never have problems like this. The touch screen isnt the best quality, and doesnt always register touches. A big negative for me was when I printed 900 pages of text documents - apparently the document pdf was encoded as color, and the print job completely depleted all my starter toners. Yikes! That was about $150-$200 of toner! I literally set the printer up, printed 10 color pages, and then the 900 and all my toners were down to 20%. The printer apparently layered all the colors (and black) to make the "black" text (it also slowed way down as it was processing). Never had this problem before. I found a way to default the color option in the driver to B&W every time. Im ok with manually selecting color when needed. A word on the cost of toner: Ive seen many reviews of people complaining of the cost. Yes, the toners for this printer are very expensive. However, they are larger capacity than most. I did a cost-per-page comparison to some comparable HP printers, and this one actually was cheaper per page. Yes, you may spend more than the cost of the printer on toners, but they last a very long time. Its really the bottom line cost per page that matters. I am getting the high capacity cartridges since they have a lower cost per page. Also, I was tired of constantly replacing inkjet cartridges.

I was searching for a laser printer that will -scan documents automatically and directly to USB device and that doesnt have to be connected to a computer to do print/scan jobs. I found out about the Canon MF733Cdw through a local store ad. I was really attracted to all the features (and price when on sale) on this All in One Printer. I was split between the Canon MF733Cdw AND the Canon MF634Cdw models. Both the models are similar in function except their toner capacity and print yield (and size/dimensions of the printer). I went for the MF733Cdw because the K toner cartridge in it (#046 black) can print up to 2,200 sheets (vs 1400 sheets for MF634Cdw model). The wireless option is very useful (especially the Air print). [I havent tested the NFC, Google Cloud Print, etc. yet]. This printer was easy to connect to the wireless. This printer does good quality scanning (double sided at once). This is a heavy and huge printer. The installation of printer driver and scanner software from the provided CD was easy. MF733Cdw model has been very user friendly- the touch screen is big and the menu has several options for the print/scan/copy functions. (I have not tested the fax option). Connect your flash drive (USB) and use the touch screen menu to print your files from your flash drive, scan a document-save the scanned files on your flash drive. There is no need for it to be connected to a computer. This Printer comes with Canons 3 years limited warranty. 5 stars for functions and ease of use.

Long ago, ink-jet printers could produce remarkably clear color prints and last a long time. Those days are gone. I have been through three ink-jet printer in the last 4-5 years. At some point they fail for mechanical or electrical reasons. In the case of my latest Epson WF, the print head clogged irreversibly, in spite of weekly nozzle checks. I dont print that much, though I scan frequently, so my hope is that this laser printer will not fail from lack of keeping the ink flowing. Speaking of ink, in answering one of the questions for this printer, someone claimed that the black toner cartridge was the standard 2500-print capacity, but the color ones were starter sized. In my case, all toner cartridges are 2500-page capacity. That should last me a few years. So far, everything has worked smoothly. Even wireless installation was a breeze. The 58-pound weight of the printer is an issue. Its really a 2-person lift to carry upstairs or set on a table unless you are pretty big and work out regularly. Still, once in place, my sit-stand desk doesnt have any trouble raising or lowering it. Image quality is good, excellent Id say for text. Even the photo quality is better than my 2-year-old ink jet. Ill check back if anything goes wrong, but for the last 2 weeks its been flawless.

We purchased this for a small office network printer and fax. The build quality seems pretty solid after a few months of usage. We have been unable to use the scan to email feature. I have attempted to set it up multiple times along with calling Canon Tech Support twice and they cannot determine why it does not work, so that is frustrating. Canon Support is friendly, but Tech-ability is very basic. I had attempted 99% of the troubleshooting prior to calling. Apparently, they cannot remote-in to troubleshoot to verify settings, etc. Any repairs would require the customer to take it to an approved repair facility (VERY inconvenient vs. sending a Technician out to service since we cant really operate without a printer.) I will say that this printer is toner-thirsty, while the print quality is nice and looks professional, it does come at a cost. We have only used genuine Canon XL toner cartridges so I cannot speak as to using third-party products. The Pros: 3-year warranty; USA based Tech Support; print quality; works well on the network (use the Canon Drivers, not windows default). Cons: web-browser for back-end settings UI is overly complicated and not all features seem to work; toner-thirsty; small paper tray; Tech Support abilities; expensive toner; unable to use all functions of the printer. I researched so many printer/fax machines and I dont believe any seem to be deserving of more than 3-Stars, yet we have autonomous driving cars... Why do printers still function as well as they did in the 80s?

Our small law office has had this printer about six months. We have a long time (very expensive) lease on a large efficient, privately serviced copy machine whose lease is coming to an end, which it was intended to replace. so maybe I’m spoiled, but this copier/scanner/printer makes me crazy. First, it’s heavy and difficult to get out of the box yourself. I was surprised by how large it is ( probably three times the size of the last multifunction unit I owned 10 years ago, which was a Brother). If space is a concern, read the dimensions carefully. It does print color pictures well. The image quality for prints and copies, especially of photos, is higher than most I would say. I also love that it air prints from your phone or iPad effortlessly, with no real set up required. My chief complaints are these: 1)it is literally almost a full minute from the time you hit print until the first page comes out. Often the machine does nothing for long enough that you start to wonder if you really hit “print” but about 30 seconds into your wait, the machine makes a grinding sound, then stops, grinds again, stops does this sometimes 3-4!times and then finally spits out the page after WAY more time than I consider reasonable. It’s about that time you realize that it is printing on both sides of the page (generally a no-no in the legal profession), which is its default setting. I tried have several times to reset it so the default is NOT print in duplex but it won’t hold that change (perhaps it’s because I’m printing from different computers and those all need to be overridden, but I feel like I have done that on them all by now. On other occasions, after the minute of grinding and moaning, the machine simply stops and then flashes an error sign as it’s trying to pull a paper tray that literally does not exist. It believes the nonexistent paper tray is empty (I only have one paper tray and it has been completely full every time I’ve got this error message. It’s just trying to pull from a nonexistent tray) . I have to go and override it and tell it to pull from tray 1 —the only tray that exists. This is not a default I have set up, nor have I selected ANY paper tray at all (Because DUH I just have the one paper tray, there should be nothing to select). In short, it’s very cumbersome and time-consuming just to get a single page to print correctly and many times I have folks waiting in my office for the print out and I look like an idiot trying to make it work. 2) although the scan quality for photos is phenomenal, the scan quality for text ( which is what I am scanning 99% of the time ) is terrible. It is a such low quality one court I tried to submit it to rejected my filing and I had to rescan on a different machine and resubmit. I was not scanning an old document or anything of that nature, it was just a document I had printed on this machine and then scanned. I’ve tried adjusting the resolution all the way up to the max and it didn’t make a difference. Copying can be done but it jams too often for me to want to use it to copy much of anything. I’m a fifty-something lawyer, very tech savvy, and I maintain the servers for our firm, I’ve probably purchased 40 printers over the last 15 years or office, some of them multifunction, and this functions more poorly than any I can remember. The price wasn’t crazy and maybe my expectations should’ve been lower at that price point, but based on the reviews, I thought this would be sufficient for our needs but I can’t make it work. I don’t know if this is how it’s supposed to function or if perhaps I just got a dud or a refurb (though it appeared new) with some weird defaults carrying over, or has some issue that’s keeping it from printing properly. I’m going to offer it to a few college students for free and after much research I’m ordering a RICOH SP C360SFNw. Our longtime leased copier is a RICOH and we’ve had great luck with that brand for 6 years, so I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for better.

Pros - The box? I liked the way the box just sort of fell away exposing this heavy printer for easy removal. I am so impressed with the speed/time for this laser printer to produce the first page, I am barely able to get from my office next door to the printer before it finishes printing what I send to it! The scan to email function is also very intuitive. Cons - images seem dark. The manual(s) are online and not very user friendly. The quick setup/getting started manual is not very clear so it took a little more time than it should have to set this up. This replaced three other printers in our home...including a 14-year old Konica/Minolta color laser. The improvements made to color laser printers over the course of 14 years are massive! Speed, ease of use, functionality, and significantly reduced power demand are incredible! Of course I have only had this unit a few hours. Ill update this review if there is any reason to do so but so far it has been a pleasure to use and performs its tasks without any glitches. I would recommend this printer if you are looking for a low cost multi-function color laser for home or small office use!

Although I ultimately purchased locally I did a great deal of research here, and wanted to contribute something in return. Although I looked at many printer brands (Ricoh, Lexmark, Xerox, Samsung, etc.), and models with prices up to about $1400, me search was narrowed to three moderately priced machines, the Brother MFC-L8900CDW, the HP LaserJet Pro M477fdw, and of course this machine, the Canon imageCLASS MF733Cdw. I have a background in electronic design as well as IT, so I am a fairly obnoxious shopper on technical products (which is why I spent several days on this). First let me touch on the two candidates I did not buy. The Brother MFC-L8900CDW: I own a lot of Brother printers, both personally and in a business setting. I have generally had good results with Brother and this printer should have been an automatic choice for me, but it wasnt. There are two reasons for that. The first reason is that Brother is engaged in a very dubious practice regarding toner management. There is a long background to this, involving an claimed variability in print density and correspondingly changing corona bias that would appear to be the justification for disallowing the swapping of toner cartridges between identical machines. and disallowing non-Brother cartridges. I personally question the need for this engineering complexity, but assuming that it is justifiable, I believe it could have been readily accomplished without dis-allowing the insertion of anything other than a brand brand new unused Brother cartridge. The second part of the issue, specifically the excessive toner wastage, has to do with the cycling of internal cartridge components. The bottom line is that if you print a lot of small jobs, there will be a substantial reduction in the amount of the toner you can actually use before the cartridge is expired. (If anyone wants a full explanation of the toner management issues, please ask in the comments.) If you buy a Brother I strongly suggest that you read up on how to bypass this expensive "management" by resetting the toner cartridge. While this may interfere with the benefits of variable corona bias (if any) and may allow for a little more wear on internal cartridge parts, I believe it will save you a lot of money. It is however a bit of a nuisance to do. I am also personally bothered by certain apparent activity that I have discovered in some of Brothers software, and the response I got from Brother when I inquired about it, but that is a discussion for another day. If anyone wants a full explanation of the toner management issues, please ask in the comments. Moving on to the next candidate, the HP LaserJet Pro M477fdw: I have had a lot of HP printers in years past. I can almost wax nostalgic about my long deceased LaserJet IIID. But like the IIID, the unquestionably excellent HP of old is no more. Still, when I went to a local retailer to look at this printer, the build quality seemed pretty good. However, the reviews made it clear that the HP has a consistent flaw in its scanner, and that HP has been less than proactive about solving the issue. Combined with a substantially higher price tag, this was a deal killer. Now to this printer, the Canon MF733. Although I love Canon photographic gear, and have been primarily shooting Canon since the early 1980s, I have been less enamored with their printers. (In spite of the fact that all of my early HP printers actually had Canon print engines in them.) As I read over the reviews I saw various complaints. I began to wonder f there were any viable printer choices in this price range. I didnt want to spend thousands of dollars for a home multi-function printer. In the end I decided that (a) Only about 16% of the reviews were negative, (b) there was not a single compelling complaint theme running through the negative reviews, (c) it was worth risking $350 in the hopes of avoiding a $1000 and up expenditure for a more commercial printer. So buying this printer was less an affirmative choice, and more of a "last man standing" selection. That said, now that I have spent the last week putting it through its paces, I could not be happier for a printer in this class. I had none of the Mac related installation issues cited by at least one reviewer. I have standardized my systems on Mavericks (10.9) and have a number of Macs as well as Win 7 machines on the network. On the Mac I simply let the Mac discover the printer (without installing Canons software) and was immediately able to print and scan. Later I did install the Canon software, and it also works properly. I did all of my printer configuration through the console at first, then through the web interface, all of which went well. Print quality has been good. I use Epson large format printers for my photographic work, and the output certainly is not up to that level, but for ordinary business class graphics I am satisfied. The print speed is really nice - a big improvement over the older monochrome multi-function that this unit is replacing. Scanning works well. The Canon Business Print app makes control and communication with my phone easy and airprint is also supported. I have not tried the NFC yet. It is the quietest color laser I have owned. So far, Im a happy camper. People in the 16% that make up the one and two star reviews have mentioned issues with cartridges and with general reliability. And while I dont dismiss those who have had problems, I saw one or two negative reviews that I would attribute to "user error". Ive only had this printer a week, although I have been exercising it because I have a 14 day return window. I recognize that a problem may yet develop. But my experience (and industry experience) is that most products fail when new (infant mortality) or when they are simply old and worn out. If this printer continues to perform as it has for the next ninety days then I believe it is going to give me years of satisfactory service. I hope whatever printer you choose meets your needs as well as this one is meeting mine. Good luck, and I hope this is helpful/

Love this printer. I did a lot of research trying to find a color laser printer to mostly replace inkjet printing. I was looking for something that had good consumable costs, printed quality text and graphics, and could do photos reasonably well when I didnt need perfect photo quality. This hit all the marks. Have also found it is fast, and lots of good features. Software support is excellent as well (for a Mac). This is my daily goto printer now.

I had problems with my MF733 dropping the wireless connection. I called Canon twice in two days. On day one the tech was very patient. He walked me though the process of making a static network connection. Printer was working when we hung up. The next day I couldn’t print via wireless. Another call to Canon. This time the tech was much less friendly. He walked me though the same process as the tech did the day before. The printer was working again. I asked him how it lost the network connection after making it a static IP address. His response was that I went in and changed the setting. I told him that I didn’t, then he said someone else did. Very intresting customer relations. I returned the machine.

Took me a while finding a All-In-One printer before I came across this one. I am one month in since I have this printer, but these are a few things I can say about quickly. You can change default settings to print Black/White instead of color. It also prints duplex - which I found many printers dont for this price (<$320). I can scan things to my email or PC folder. Additional plus thing which it was not specifically noted is, it has Ethernet port. It also looks like toner cartridges are below $200 for all 4. One small challenge I had was to configure Fax and Scan to email or PC. Didnt find it on any of the documentation. Someone youtubed the instructions - very helpful. I got it to work afterwards.
