Oppo having decided to cease their universal player production has left me in lurch. Having had OPPO players all the way up to my BDP-95 I wanted a universal player that could also play UHD with DV. Unfortunately BDP-205 was way out of my reach and the current resale prices are insane. This Sony player fit the bill. Here are some observations: 1. Plays all the SACDs 2. Plays all the DVD Audios 3. Plays DSF files over network including MCH (need to use wired connection though) 4. DV works but needs to be manually enabled 5. SACD-R playback not supported, need to wear out my originals As far as UI goes, its barebones. Only 3 apps, all of which is not needed since every other display or video source has them. Noise is better than my other UHD player(LG UP970) but not as good as OPPO, the 95 had a thick chassis. Video quality is good, nothing fancy though at the end, it depends on your displays renderer. Price point is great for a universal player, comes with 2 free UHD discs. Thumbs up from me.

Splendid look and excellent build quality. Very good picture and sound from BD and Netflix. However there are three problems: 1) No automatic detection of Dolby Vision. Must be turned off manually each time you are watching a non DV movie. 2) Does not support Dolby Digital Plus (eac3 codec) when watching movies through USB hard disc. 3) Moving through the Netflix menu is very slow compared to my LG TV or laptop. I hope Sony solve these issues with a firmware update.

If you’re looking for a state-of-the-art 4K/Blu-ray player look no farther than the Sony UBP-X800M2. This is an upgrade from Sony’s previous UDP-X800 player. Sony took what made this player great and finally added Dolby Vision processing. This makes color, contrast and brightness optimal for your TV, projector or mobile devices. They also updated the graphic interface that looked so cluttered on previous models. This player upgrades all discs to look like 4K. All the newer audio technologies are included: Dolby Atmos and DTS-X. To install this player into your system, just plug in your HDMI cable, upgrade the firmware, set up settings and you’re ready to go. This player does 3D movie processing. But to do it, you need to turn Dolby Vision to the “Off” position. My only complaint is that Sony only offers 3 streaming services: Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube. If you want to add additional streaming channels, just forget it. For now, Sony will not let you add any! Although this Sony 4K/Blu-ray player will provide an exceptional viewing experience, don’t pick it up if you opt for many different streaming channels.

this is the second sony uhd player in the last month. the menu will not appear when turning on the player. Sony service help desk could not help. the player works fine playing directly with the Sony Tv but not with a Sony 4k audio receiver . A firmware update did not help. So be careful.

TL:DR: After suffering through two of these terrible players, I gave up and ordered a Panasonic UB820. The X800M2 seems to be a dream player on paper - relatively inexpensive, support for Dolby Vision, nice build quality. Unfortunately it is hobbled by completely unreliable playback behavior, even with the latest firmware installed. I suffered repeated and random (meaning not at the same spot on the disc) freezes whenever I played a BD-100 (100GB capacity UHD blu-ray) disc: The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim, and Mission Impossible: Fallout all exhibited freezes during playback that required a player reset. When this happened with my first X800M2 I figured I had a bad unit and returned it for a replacement. Then the second unit came and exhibited the exact same behavior. Its going back to Amazon next week. I am replacing it with a Panasonic UB820. The X800M2s sole reason for being is to serve as a dedicated playback device for 4K blu-rays. Given my experience it is absolutely not fit for purpose. Avoid at all costs.

This is possibly the best UHD disc player you can currently buy for the money. It is, however, not a great streaming source. This unit does not include the same interface or streaming apps that its predecessor the UBP-X800 did. It only includes Netflix, Amazon, and Youtube -- no Hulu, HBO, or anything else. Also, of the three supported streaming apps, none of them include support for HDR or object-based audio like Dolby Atmos. There doesnt seem to be any public plans from Sony to add these in a future update. A real let-down of a streaming device in this age, if you ask me. Its an excellent buy if you intend to use it mostly as a UHD disc player though, and dont value the streaming quite as much. If, however, you intend to use this as your primary streaming device and want to enjoy HDR and Atmos from Netflix, keep looking.

One of the main reasons I bought this was for the split audio/video HDMI so I could send video straight to the TV and bypass my non 4k receiver. It works great -sometimes. During BD playback if I pause the movie and come back theres a chance the screen will go back and I will only get audio until I reset the player. This also occurs randomly while streaming through Netflix even without pausing and I have yet to find a cause or solution, I have the latest firmware. Its hooked up to a brand new LG C9 which has been flawless and I only experience this issue with this BD player. The menu for Netflix is smooth and gorgeous on the LG and makes the Sony app look clunky and ugly and I find myself using the built it LG app with ARC even though I would get better audio through the Sony just due to ease of use and auto Dolby Vision detection on the LG. The lack of support for Dolby Digital Plus (eac3) support for USB playback is mind boggling. I really hope this gets fixed with a firmware update as its very disappointing since its such a widely used codec. Lastly, no auto-detection for Dolby Vision is extremely annoying, having to manually turn it on and off in the settings depending on what youre watching gets old real fast. I want to love this BD player I really do, it has everything it needs to be great but falls short in such meaningful ways in its execution that I couldnt recommend this player to anyone.

This 4k Blu-Ray player has USB 2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet. I should have done more research before making this purchase. My digital camera shoots high bit rate 4k video (144 mbps) and this Blu-Ray player cannot play it over the 100 mbps ethernet port. It will play fine from a USB drive though. For internet streaming the ethernet will be fine but not for high bit rate video over a local giga-bit network. Since I save all my files to Network Attached Storage on a giga-bit network this device is not as useful as I had hoped.

I dont mind having to manually activate or deactivate the Dolby Vision protocol; Im not that lazy. Both the 800M2 and the earlier X700 possessed and granted access to Dolby Vision in the same way. However, what I like the most about the X800M2 over the X700 is that the unit, being a way heavier and solid unit, runs quieter. If you have your equipment isolated in a soundproofed cabinet or off-site equipment closet, this may not be a problem, but if like my set up, the UHD Blu Ray player is right under the screen, when a 4K Blu Ray movie revs up you can hear the motor spinning furiously on the Sony X700. Its way quieter on the X800M2, nowhere near as distracting during quiet moments during a movie.

Smaller in size than expected. Not so toughly built but strong enough. True to the advert it came with Jumanji and spider man... great picture quality. There were some picture lags with the Jumanji but I soon discovered it wasnt from the player when I played the Planet II/Earth II 4k uhd bluray disc i bought alongside it......awesome! Flawless.. HDR picture... dolby vision and atmos... set up was simple with online update...your good to go. So far...so good...
