I just had to write a review. Theres only 2 reviews at the time Im writing this and some id**t gave it one star for not having wifi capability incorrectly dropping down the overall rating average. NEWS FLASH- Its not a wifi model (i.e. see "wired" in the description", read the specs, and so on). Its not dishwasher as well. This is a low cost excellent Blu-Ray player. It does what is suppose to do. Not much else I can say.

Let me start by saying I am only using this as a DVD player and have not used the streaming feature as I have a Roku I use for that. I have only had this player for about 2 weeks and so far it is great. It starts up quickly and the picture quality is good. I have only played regular DVDs, not Blu-ray but plan on trying them soon. This unit came with the latest firmware update so hopefully I wont run into the child lock problem that others have had to deal with. The unit itself is very small and compact. It was so small that my wife didnt even realize it was already set up and ready to go.

I figured it was time for me to start streaming shows, but I knew I didnt want to be streaming them onto either my computer or tiny little screens that would give me eyestrain and neckaches. So I gambled on Sony. And it paid off. This is an attractive device that sits unobtrusively under the TV. It hooks by Ethernet directly into your cable modem. Since Ive got it on the main TV and in that little nest of electronic cord knots, that was no issue at all. Its fast loading and the picture is flawless once it gets all buffered. Ive never had it stutter or lose its place, never had a lag. Its like watching HD TV and I cant tell the difference. It runs all my existing DVDs -- my gamble on Sony paid off.

Only had this a few weeks-will update later. I thought it would come with no wi/fi connection but it did. Has several apps pre-installed and you can add others. I tried them and they worked fine. I really only bought this to play DVDs and it does that fine so far. The remote sometimes lags but eventually works. Pretty good for a refurbished Blu-Ray player, esp. for what I paid.

I purchased this Sony BDPS-1700 Wired Blu-Ray Disc Player primarily for its capability to display Closed Captioning (CC) on my TVs HDMI inputs when playing my standard DVDs with same CC encoded. I have a significant (to me) collection of British TV series DVDs, some with and some without CC encoding, than I employ to assist me (and husband) in understanding "typical" British accents used by some British actors. This feature is working well for me. This "CC" feature is separate from the "subtitles" feature common to all Blu-Ray players and may be available to other brands. I believe the Sony BDPS- 3500 and 3700 Blu-Ray players have this same CC feature. [ I dont work for Sony or anyone else and Im not devoted to any particular brand]. Some of my other standard DVD collection have DVDs which freeze, pixelate, skip, or just wont play/access portions. I tested a couple DVD sets which have these problems when using my standard DVD players (more than one brand) using this Blu-Ray Disc player and the DVDs played OK. I have not tested all such DVDs in my collection with these problems and dont claim it will work every time. These DVDs played OK when I first bought them, but subsequent playing after considerable time (years) reveals faults not previously encountered. I have not used the player for Blu-Ray discs or for streaming.
