I bought a Samsung BD-H6500 Blu-ray Player to go along with my Samsung 8500 TV since they sync together. That’s an OK feature but not life-changing. It was also the upper midrange player with 4K up-convert and I was looking for an exceptional picture. I LOVE 3D movies and I was hoping for a better-than-the-movie-theater experience. That’s when I started learning how much I DON’T know about playing 3D at home. If you are really into 3D, the Samsung may not be the player for you. I found out belatedly that the majority, the VAST majority, of 3D movies are on Region B disks (UK). If you paid less than $200 for your player, its probably a single region, and probably a Region A player. It wasn’t long before I found myself buying more movies from the UK than the US. Many are Region Free but not all. Who ever dreamed up this region concept, obviously just to make more money, should be hung upside down by the short hairs. So I bucked up and bought this Sony 3D, 4K up-convert, Region Free player. First off, the 3D effect is MUCH more pronounced on the Sony. Also the picture over all is much crisper and has more depth. I guess I was mistakenly assuming that all Blu-ray players output the same picture — wow, was I wrong. The Sony is MUCH more like, and sometimes even better than, the movie theater experience. Also the Sony is about 1/2 the size of the Samsung and I really like small components. The Sony also automatically controls the Samsung TV just like the Samsung player did — guess that was just hype from Samsung. I am extremely pleased with this Sony 3D player. If/when they come out with a true 4K UHD, Region Free, 3D player, I’ll definitely be getting Sony instead of Samsung.

Being from the USA, my patience ran out waiting for video conglomerates dragging their feet deciding which British TV shows to allow to be aired on PBS stations via satellite/cable, and streaming. At best, which Brit shows air when in whatever form is spotty in the US. I finally said screw it, and bought this all-region Blu-Ray/DVD player -- which is a dream. It played the first few episodes of New Tricks DVD Complete DVD (European region) beautifully. Even though not Blu-Ray, the New Tricks set of DVDs plays sharp and clean -- to my untrained eye appears equivalent to HD quality. This machine knows which region the DVD is from without having to flip any switches -- in other words, effortless. Now I can watch DVDs and Blu-Rays from all over the world. I am as happy as a clam. WARNING When shopping for a multi-region/all-region player, BE SURE the description says so! (the outside of the box too!) You will likely bump into the same exact model without it saying anything about multi-region. If you see nothing SPECIFICALLY saying such-and-such player is multi-region (or some other term like multi-zone; all-region; region-free), IT IS NOT MULTI-REGION! Move on and find a model that has a description explicitly saying multi-region. For example, this exact Sony model here offered by BestBuy was NOT multi-region -- therefore, I refused it. The sales-guy looked sheepish. If you go to the BestBuy site, note that the description for their Sony BDP-S6500 says nothing about multi-region which in fact, it is not. In the Best Buy case, I could have phoned Best Buy, asking if this their model was multi-region, having them look on the outside of the box, to which they would have had to reply "No, it isnt." BEWARE Sellers are trying to unload the same exact model but previous years. There are still 2014 and 2015 model years left unsold (often at full retail price, to boot), even as 2017s are rolled out. Ascertain by checking "Date first available on Amazon" near the bottom of the page. If that "date first" is missing, find the date of the first review {click on Reviews; See all XX reviews; Sort by Most Recent as opposed to Top; scroll to the earliest review on highest numbered page}. Decide what your boundary year is, earlier than that year you refuse to buy. CHRISTMAS RUSH I can see this model going out-of-stock FAST. If you want this model as a gift, buy early (like now).

Be warned, this does not play 4K discs. I didnt get a defective model; its literally just a clever lie on Sonys part. This thing "upscales" to 4K, but cannot actually play 4K. What an absolute farce.

UPDATE: Bombay sent me a BRAND NEW player which works perfectly! Do not hesitate to place an order with them. They stand by their products!!!! Highly recommended! UPDATE: Bombay has graciously offered to look at my player and repair it even though it is past the 30-day listed warranty. I was told products sold on Amazon do have a one-year warranty. This was my first and only problem with this player so if they are able to fix it I will leave my previously glowing review. I have recommended this player to 4 or 5 other people and they purchased it based on my recommendation so I truly hope they stand by their products. Response time was VERY quick! Will update... I purchased this player on August 20, 2016 and yesterday it stopped outputting images to the screen. Ive tried several HDMI cables that work perfectly on my other blu-ray players so it has nothing to do with the cable. The player functions in the background but will not output to the screen (I know this because it occasionally outputs a brief image to the screen from time to time). This company only guarantees the player and parts for 3 months... only the region-free aspect is guaranteed for a year. Sony guarantees the player and parts for a year but THAT warranty was voided when the player was modified to be region-free. REALLY crappy! A one-year warranty on a BRAND NEW player that neither company will honor after only 8 months. Such a shame because up until it stopped outputting to the TV, I had not had a single problem with this player and left a glowing review. Now Im out $239 for the player + the possibly worthless 3-year warranty I purchased (not sure what it will cover since this is a modified player). Now I have a library of imported movies I can no longer watch.

When it works, this region-free BluRay player works great. Our trouble is that it doesnt stay on when idle, and it wont turn on when pressing the power button on the remote or the player itself. We end up having to unplug the power cord, wait at least 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. Sometimes that works, sometimes the green power light comes on a for a second or two, and then goes out again, making us do the unplug power routine again at least one more, sometimes it takes 3 or 4 attempts.

This product is wonderful...in theory. Everything works fine UNTIL you hit the NETFLIX icon, and the whole player freezes. This is AFTER updating the unit. There is a fix, but it is long and why am I doing it? 4 months after it arrived, the laser lens also failed. It was under warranty but Sony, after confirming that it was broken, sent me an email saying I had payed too much for it, and that they would not fix or replace the item. Amazon picked up the ball, but their refund was $45 dollars short of the purchase price. I cant blamed them, but I feel robbed.

It does what it says. I am in the US and this player played all the DVDs from UK like it claims. For some reasons, it almost 100% asks if I want to connect to the internet every time I turns it on to watch video streams that needs the internet. It is wire-connected so I am not sure why it almost always asks me for the connection. It is a bit annoying but now I can watch DVD/Blu-Ray with no problems. I am happy.

Makes DVDs that were fuzzy on my old player and improves the quality of the picture. Has played DVDs and Blu-rays from all over the world. The only DVD that would not play is a DVD-R that is not region 1??? Dont understand it as I have a $30 region free DVD player that does play it. Huh oh well cant always be perfect. If you have a big DVD collection and dont want to replace them all with Blu-rays to make best of your UHD TV buy this instead. Most people will not be able to tell the difference between a DVD played on this player and a Blu-ray played on say a PS3-4 using the same UHD TV.

Love this DVD player. Plays all regions automatically. I havent had an opportunity to try blu-ray regions. This even played home made dvds I had copied from VHS tapes of my family years ago. No problems updating with the player from 220-Electronics. Watching apps on the Internet was easy. I set this up in just a few minutes and I am a 60-something female. The only negative is that there is no counter to show you where you are while watching a DVD. I can deal with that since the other features are exceptional.

Does NOT play 4k UHD Blu Ray discs. I was fooled by the "4k Ultra HD" logo and other wording in the description. Dont get me wrong; notice I didnt give a one-star review. This player may well be everything its cracked up to be, and the all-region factor is cool, but it doesnt do what I want.
