Panasonic Smart Network 4K Upscaling 3D Blu-Ray Disc & Streaming Player DMP-BDT270 (Silver), WiFi, Miracast

Overall, I really like this Blu-Ray player. I was looking for a unit with a small footprint and they dont come much smaller than this. I was also looking for a unit that would play discs and also stream content so I could free up the HDMI port I am currently using for a Roku box. I did eventually succeed, and the Netflix app on this unit has become my favorite...but establishing the network connection was much more of a headache than it needed to be, The two main issues are: 1) this unit is sensitive to security protocols (it can connect with WPA2, it cannot connect to WEP) and 2) the manual is ambiguous on this point but this player does not have an ethernet port so wireless connection is the only option. The "Easy Network Connection" utility on this player is only "easy" in the sense that it is easy to find out whether or not the player is compatible with your network. If it is not (which was the case on our network), the only feedback was that the player failed to connect. Network configuration options on the player are limited; so if the connection does fail, theres not much you can do to the player to correct the problem. I was able to tease out the players network preferences by connecting it to another network (using my phone as a mobile hotspot) and once I knew what protocols it would accept, I made changes to my home network so that this unit would connect to the network. I was afraid this might have introduced some connectivity issues with other devices, but so far this does not seem to be a problem. Once I established the network connection and started using it, I really like this unit and Im glad Im able to use a unit of this size instead of rearranging and entire shelving unit to accommodate a different one thats a few inches wider. Id give it 5 stars if it werent for the finicky network connection; if I can seamlessly connect with a $49 Roku box, Id think all the other manufacturers could have figured it out by now.

It works great for the dvds abd blu ras that I have tried thus far. I have Netfix setup and it seemed to work fine. It is very limited on its streaming services. It has utube, Netflix a weather app and something eles Im not at all familiar with. Its not noisy enough to bother once the movie starts. Seems to have good picture and audio. Loads much faster then 2009 Toshiba my daughter broke and much smaller. Much better then the Sony I had to send back because it only worked for 1 day. Update: it will not play brand new blu Rays . It says its firmware needs but has failed this update 5 times in a row. It may have taken it this last time since its playing a new movie after 30 minutes of fiddling. My 2009 Toshiba started to do the same thing until I severed its internet connection. I may try that here since I only really want this for Blu Rays & DVDs. I may update later. I have changed my stars from 4 to 1. I do not expect this kind of hassle in a disc player. 5-30-16 Update: Im changing stars which I originally had at 4 then changed to 1 & now Im returning to 4. The reason is I have had no more issues with it playing discs and Ive played a great variety of them from Blu Ray to DVD, fingerprinted by my little kids or brand new and no more issues. Im thinking the update to the firmware kicked in and has made that difference. So its not that I cant makeup my mind about it just time tested now. BWM

So far it seems like a good solid player. The product description didn’t specify what type of outputs on the back but I have always had good luck with Panasonic so for $99 I took a chance. Was disappointed to find only one HDMI output and nothing else. Ran the player’s HDMI output to my TV and the TV sound output to my receiver. Hopefully this will give me surround sound. Otherwise this player will be banished to the bedroom.

In my experience, Panasonic has always made quality products at a fair price. I found that to be true with this player as well. I bought this player mostly to play Blu-Ray discs, which it does flawlessly. Please note this player does NOT have analog video and audio outs, or an ethernet jack for a hardwire connection. What really surprised me was how much I end up using this player for streaming video. However, you cannot add or delete apps from the web. This player comes with preinstalled apps. It does have Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Video, as well as Vudu and a couple of others I dont use. In my setup, I sometimes see video scaling up from SD in the first minute or so to full HD as advertised. I give this player four stars and not five because the only way apps get updated appear to be through a firmware update. So far, Panasonic has done a solid job in releasing new firmware to address possible issues. Ive noticed the YouTube app has been updated, for example. Im also not sure if WiFi performance (or issues associated with it) are due to the player, or my wireless setup. Overall though, Im satisfied with this player.
