I only use this unit in our basement entertainment system, which is very infrequently--maybe once per month. The issue of it not ejecting might be misinterpreted as having a mind of its own but is likely just how slow this unit responds. It has always been that way, taking about 30 - 60 seconds to open. It also takes about a minute to turn on. Aside from that, it worked well for about a year but then would turn off in the middle of playing a disc of any kind. I now consider this a defective product (either design or build quality). This is disappointing. I used to hold Panasonic in very high regard, having bought and enjoyed many of their products but no more. One disastrous product can ruin a companys reputation. This is one such product.

Ive had this player for just over 6 months. I had no complaints with it until about 2 months ago it starting freezing while playing most discs rented from Netflix. At first, I thought Netflix was sending me bad discs, and I called them about it and they were very helpful and even credited me for 1 month of service. Then it kept happening, so I put one of the "bad" discs in a Sony blu ray player I have. No problem with the Sony at all! So I called Panasonic. They had me "reset it". That didnt help. Made sure the firmware was up to date - it was. So they had me send it back for exchange. (I had to pay a fifteen dollar fee, plus I had to pay shipping to send the original one to them). They sent me the replacement. I played one Blu Ray from Netflix successfully. The next one, froze about half-way through the movie. I put it in the Sony player - no problem. So I now have had two of this model Panasonic Blu Ray Player and they both have freezing problems. The weird things is that it hasnt happened with any purchased Blu Rays. So I dont know if the problem is that the Netflix movies tend to be more roughed up, or if it is because rental versions are slightly different than retail, or what. I dont know if it is a dual-layer issue (when the player has to transition to the 2nd layer), because I was able to go to the scene selection, skip a chapter and it played out fine from that point. I certainly dont think sending it back to Panasonic (again) will help. Im thinking there is a problem with this model. Perhaps it is just a firmware issue, but Panasonic isnt saying there is any known issue. Im getting ready to give up on it and buy another Sony. ** UPDATE 6/15/2013 ** Panasonic FINALLY gave me the solution to the problem. (Not sure why they didnt tell me this the first time I called them, instead of having me send the unit back to get a replacement). They told me to add an SD card (2GB or more) into the SD Card Slot. That, apparently, gives the player more memory that it needs to properly read some discs. I added an 8GB card, and the movie that was having trouble, played through no problem. Im leaving my 2-stars since the Panasonic support failed to correctly solve the problem the first time (costing me money) and the fact that the player doesnt have enough built in memory to keep this from being an issue in the first place. But I am glad I dont have to go buy a new player. *** UPDATE 8/16/2013 *** Ive taken my rating down to 1 star. This player continues to give me problems with Netflix BluRay discs. It has no trouble with BluRay discs that I own, purchased new. I can not figure out what is causing this problem. Every one of the last few Netflix BluRays I received experienced the problem. I have switched back to DVDs from Netflix and every one of those plays just fine. This is a BluRay player! It should at least do the one thing it is made to do correctly. It does not.

The dvd player stops in mid-movie and has to be re-started and advanced to finish a movie. I bought this in December. Support cannot help me and its too late to return product. Avoid this model.

I have owned Panasonic products of all kinds for several decades due to their features and reliability. However, this disc player has turned out to be a piece of low-quality junk. The power and eject buttons have always seemed to have a mind of their own by only working when they feel like it. The last disc I tried to watch began to skip and pause until it froze permanently. After literally several minutes of trying to extract the disc, I finally got it to eject and I finished watching it successfully on another player. So it definitely was the fault of this player and not the disc. I should have heeded the warnings of some of the other reviewers and now its too late to return this player to Amazon. But whatever I replace it with will not have the name Panasonic on it anymore. If this is turning out to be the low-quality route that Panasonic is deciding to follow with its products in general, then I will be parting company with them for good. What a shame.
