In fairness to Samsung, this unit had been modified to be region-free by Multisystem Electronics. The Amazon literature was not entirely clear about this, but it was obvious upon inspection — after-factory stickers had been added by Multisystem Electronics. The unit arrived out of the box utterly non-functioning except for HDMI output — otherwise no power function, setup, disc load, or response to any remote commands. Amazon directed me to return the unit through Multisystem Electronics (for a refund, not replacement). This is the second time I have experienced near-term failure of a unit modified by Multisystem Electronics (the other was a Sony), so I have zero confidence in their quality control.
