It seems like 4k players are not perfected yet. Every one you read about has issues with freezes that lock up the player or has brief freezes in the movie(even with the best 4k rated HDMI cable). I had a much more expensive Sony that did it constantly. I could not get through one movie with it. So it was returned and based on the fact that every player has instances of this I looked for decent reviews and a budget price. I found this a bought it. I should add that my TV and soundbar are also LG so it seemed like a natural fit. This is somewhat of a basic player. It must be hardwired to your network for updates and streaming of Netflix, Hulu etc. But guess what? Or works extremely well. It is many times better than the Sony I had. In fact k have only had one brief 4k hiccup and it was very brief. Picture quality is as expected. Top Notch. It is compatible with your LG Smart TV remotes as well.. I highly recommend this for your first 4k player. If you need all the bells and whistles of a high end player I would wait until firmware and players are improved. Get this first. It wont break the bank.. Your mileage may very.. Sometimes issues are movie specific so if you so have an issue make sure to try multiple players

This 4K player has THE most impressive image quality I have seen so far but that may not be saying much. 8K definition is in the near future. Other models I have used are the PHILIPS BDP7501 & BDP5502, SANYO FWBP807. The LG UP870 has a fascinating upscaling engine, it can smooth out a grainy picture and greatly increase detail without being over aggressive. This makes a high quality DVD look like a real Bluray and a quality Bluray is very close to 4K! The 4K images produced by this player are PHENOMENAL, the sharpest television images I have ever seen. Mesmerizing! 4K HDR discs are played automatically in this mode, if the disc doesnt ask you to choose SDR. I find some HDR discs to be too extreme for my taste but this player has image quality adjustments you can make during playback to suit yourself. I usually brighten the picture and dial back the color a bit. I dont think this player supports Dolby Vision at this time, I have a disc with this feature and it looks superb in standard HDR. This LG player will recognize my MP3 CDs & DVDs of classic radio programs, it lets you jump to any track anytime by entering its number. I also appreciate the ability to play Region 0 (ALL) PAL video format DVDs. The UP870 has an excellent PAL~NTSC converter, video is very smooth. There is a Multi Region version of this player available here at Amazon for around $200 at the time of this review, I am currently using a Multi Region PANASONIC DMP BDT270 for my Other Region collection. Another great budget player. The remote control is intelligent but smallish, very lightweight and easy to hold. It uses only one AAA battery. Build quality is impressive, I like the stylish front buttons shaped like their functions. I wish they were LEDs. One front LED I can do without is the BRIGHT RED standby indicator! It GLARES at me if I dont use it at night. Ominous. When I first plugged this player in I saw this light and waited for it to do something, I thought it was on! After a time I press the power button, RED light goes off, GREEN light comes on. I dont care for the blank screen during disc ejection, too bright at night. I do not like the onscreen Angle Icon. I see it often while watching my classic Star Trek TV series Blurays and I cant turn it off. Annoying. The disc tray isnt exactly Finger Friendly, I like to handle my discs by the edges but with this player I have to use the center hole carefully. There is an indentation on the right front but its awkward for me. My PHILIPS 4K TV gets along well with my LG UP870, but it refers to it as only Player 2. I have not noticed any noise issues whatsoever, player is very quiet at all times. I truly do believe this is the best 4K player you can find for less than $100. It is NOT engineered for Internet streaming however, and that is fine with me. I would much rather have more effort devoted to overall product functionality anytime. I bought a 4K Bluray player and that is what I want, NOT an Internet Hub. I am VERY PLEASED with this player and it is rewarding to use, impressively so! I printed out the Owners Manual for this and its 56 pages long! Please note this review is for the 2017 model.

Worked my way through a Samsung & couple of Sony Blu-ray players hopefully & so far so good, I will keep this LG. No Netflix, Prime, Roku et al functions. Plays movies very well with excellent clarity picture & audio. Appears to be a quality Blu-ray player that excels at one thing. Fast load, very good fast forward & pause operations, no issues playing Blu-rays. (thats all I use it for). FYI I have a Samsung 4K smart TV, the Samsung Blu-ray conflicted with the smart TV kept waking up & changing ports, generally causing trouble. Bought 2 models of Sony Blu-rays both were not very good. Happy with my LG.

I have LG 4K 3D OLED TV along with 7.2 channel A/V receiver. Players routed thru receiver into TV. I have 4 blu-ray UHD 3D, around 7 4K blu-ray and tons of non-4K blu-ray / DVDs. All of them worked. VIDEO Quality: 3D or 4K is detected by TV immediately. video output set to 4K quality. My A/V receiver video is marked as pass-thru. I have tried 4K blu-ray and display is phenomenal. Then I took normal blu-ray up converted by the player vs no up conversion by player. In case no up conversion, conversion is being done by TV. TV up conversion was slightly better in terms of buffer/jitters for fast movement scenes but thats expected. Overall impressed with the up conversion of this player. AUDIO - I use - for audio PCM which I determined to be lossless (some players send PCM but loosy) and found my A/V receiver happily using the correct Codec. Quality : impressive. User Interface: PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Hoorah. None of those streaming apps, etc 4 choices: Movies, Photos, Music, Settings. 1st. three - accessible via USB device if connected (player has a USB port up front) or some MHL (no idea). Settings - has network connection but will be used in case of firmware upgrades of BD Live content only. No wireless. Construction: Full metal body and silent with none of the big LED lights up front. Another good thing - the provided power cord is long, remote comes with battery (very rare these days). Negatives: Does not support network music/video servers and the remote is very small. Thankfully, could use my LG TV magic remote to control this player.

LOVE IT! I have a 70" Samsung LED, 3D capable TV and this is the PERFECT player with it. Hookup/setup took all of about 10 minutes from when I opened the box until I was playing the first 4K movie. And it plays great! Couldnt be happier with it!

If you are looking for a simple plug and play 4k player, this is your machine. If you dont want a player that freezes all the time, causes other problems, is hard to set up, takes 20 minutes to get to the movie, then this is your machine. If you dont want a machine that freezes constantly, you have to unplug, restart and spend 20-40 minutes getting back to where you left off in the movie when it crashes, then this is your machine. If you want a machine with lights and buttons on the front, easy access, easy remote, then this is your machine. If you like quality, metal case, a drawer that does not open so far that it is weak, this is your machine. If you want a machine that plays 4k movies, plug and play, then this is your machine. If you want a machine that has a lot of apps, IE. netflix, pandora etc. then this is NOT your machine. If you want to spend over 400, this is not your machine. If you have a 4k TV to go with the player, it has several HDMI inputs. Use another for streaming stuff. Having a 4k player to stream junk form the internet makes no sense, (no insult to streaming media intended, but how many devices do you need to do the same thing?) This machine works !!!! have gone through several, unhappy with all of them. This one, works as advertised!!! Has zero issues. You can spend over 500 to get a OPPO player, this will do well!!!!

Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had with a device from a major manufacturer. So far this has failed to EVER PLAY A SINGLE DISC. Even in the initial menus, it begins with a series of random white flashes. Then during play (DVD, Bluray, and 4k) the white flashes continue, eventually becoming screen blackouts lasting a few seconds. I have tried different settings, different known good cables, nothing works. The unit has been sent back to LG two times. The first time they had it for two months. The second time they had it for six weeks. Both times it came back exhibiting the exact same behavior. I know its not a problem with my equipment because Ive tried a Samsung 4k player and it works fine. Also, Ive been reading the forums around the net specific to this unit and others have been having the same issues. Stay away from this LG.

Okay, LG, you made a pretty decent simple 4k Blu Ray player that isnt overloaded with price, or bells and whistles

It is a very new and high quality DVD/Blu-ray/UHD disc player. It loads movies fast and the menu is simple. It doesnt have many bells and whistles--which I dont need, especially because I have an Apple TV. Good price.

for starters this is not a "smart" player. you can connect it the internet but only to do updates for the player. you can not play apps such as netflix, hulu, or hbo. it does allow my smart tv controller to control the player so use of multiple remotes are not needed. have had for a few months with no issues so far.
