I purchased this printer thinking it would scan large format documents and also print envelopes. IT DOES NOT!! The scanning software from HP does not provide an option to scan anything larger than 8-1/2" x 14" documents and there are no instructions on setting up scan formats. Even after spending long sessions with HP support, I could not get it to print envelopes properly. Another annoyance is the document feeder constantly miss-scans a document if it has a fold in it (like nearly everything that comes through the mail in a standard envelope). It loses communication with the host computer regardless of what com is used (USB, Cat5, Wireless). When inserting anything other than 20# 8-1/2" paper it miss-feeds or fails to recognize the paper type. Tech support from HP is not very helpful with any of these issues. I have used HP printers for over 25 years and they were once the workhorse of the industry but they are getting worse in quality, support and real useful features. I do not recommend this printer!!

I was a little concerned from previous reports. Either people loved or hated this printers print quality. I replaced two older HP printers, an HP 6127 (purchased in 2003) and a wide format HP 9800 primarily due to lack of drivers with the latest version of Windows 10. While I can fault HP for that, having a printer than I purchased in 2003 and expecting current drivers is probably very unrealistic. Its more of a testament to the quality of the printer that it still works great at age 15. Desk space is a premium quantity, so thats the reason for replacing both. New drivers for the 9800 dont support duplex printing, and it doesnt live on the network so is problematic for a home printer. Ive had the printer a few hours, but already see better print quality, and better speed. Printing an 8x10 picture out of the box with default settings saw the reported color bands in the photograph as others reported. It printed the photo in a fast draft mode and doesnt auto recognize the paper loaded. Once you set the paper type after you load the tray, and set your program for best quality, the photo printing exceeds the HP 9800 with no signs of color banding or other printer artifacts. It significantly beats both in picture quality and we are talking by a factor 2 to 3 times better. As an office printer, the output is sharp and fast. Color printing of charts on plain paper in fast mode shows no banding artifacts. I am happy with my purchase.

Its been over 10 years since I last bought an HP printer. Their calculators were the envy of students in the 1970s, but thats a far cry from their inkjet printers, which have always suffered from dumb design decisions. I tried one again in 2017. Hardware-wise, its very good and Ill keep using it but, unless they fix this problem, it will be my last HP. I just ran out of ink for the first time (its a home printer). The pop-up message said I was out of black ink and no, I couldnt simulate black with the color inks; the message said the printer will not print with an empty cartridge. Off to the store I went. I popped the new, high-capacity cartridge into the printer and no(!), it will not print with an empty cartridge the dialog box said - cyan, this time. It would have saved me a trip to the store if the first dialog box had told me both were low - doesnt seem like a lot to ask of the programmers. (Worse, I could have bought a set of all four cartridges for a few dollars more than buying two individually.) But bottom line, I should have checked all of the ink levels before going to the store. So I checked all of the ink levels before going to the store again. Good, magenta and yellow were fine. I come back with a new, high-capacity Cyan cartridge, and the printer again says it will not print with an empty cartridge! Lo and behold, magenta and yellow now show bone-dry. Heres my advice: 1) Buy a full set of cartridges on your first re-fill. If the printer doesnt want them all, save them for later. Either way, youll have saved time and money. 2) Be prepared to toss out cartridges that still have ink in them. Maybe the printer raised the "empty" threshold when two of the four cartridges were high-capacity or full, but it *will not* print unless I go spend another $80 on ink. Add that to the $90 I spend last night and today and its $50 more than a full set - plus I dont get to finish the ink I have. Ive applied all software updates, but I cant get over the feeling that this bug makes HP money so its so high on the fix list. Once again, Im disappointed with HP; Im not likely to give them the chance to "fool me thrice".

I am very disappointed in this printer. This is actually the replacement one that was sent to me after the first one refused to believe that there was no paper jam. This printer at least recognizes paper is present, BUT it CANNOT pull my card stock. It says there is a paper jam every time, when there is none. It just cant seem to grab it. I do so many projects with card stock. I am soooooooooo disappointed. Unfortunately, we just missed the deadline for returning this one when we were finally going to make the time to pack it all up. The color is bright and crisp, which has been my experience with HP printers. The 11x17 paper fits in the bottom tray, but the drawer is left "open" with the extra long paper in it. Anyways, if you want to print 100 lb. card stock, like I do, I do not recommend this printer.

Good for personal use but not friendly for a multi-user environment. I wanted this mostly for its 11x17 capabilities. Capabilities are very limited using the printers display; more capability is available through software loaded on a host computer, which makes it impractical for a multi-user office. Auto feeder isnt wide enough for 11x17 either. Either drawer, when loaded with 11x17, paper sticks out several inches. What was HP smoking when they designed this?

An affordable home based business printer capable of printing, copying, and scanning 11"x17" black & white as well as color documents. The only thing so far is it would be nice to be able to scan 11"x17" documents using the ADF (automatic document feeder). This unit limits ADF to maximum size of 8 1/2" x 14" document size. However, the copier surface of the printer provides for copying and scanning up to 11"x17" documents, a page at a time. Otherwise great prints, very easy set up, was printing, scanning, and faxing within just a few minutes after unboxing the unit. Mobile printing was a breeze using iPhone, iPad, and Android smartphone and tablets. Another really nice feature is this printer has two (2) paper trays. Tray 1: 3 x 5 to 11.7 x 17 in; Tray 2: 8.5 x 11 to 11.7 x 17 in. NOTE - PRODUCT DESCRIPTION ERROR: The product description for this printer on Amazon states to use 932 and 933 print cartridges. The unit comes with 952 and 953 print cartridges and HPs website states to use 952 and 953 print cartridges. So when you buy extra print cartridges be sure to buy the 952 and 953. I recommend the 952XL and 953XL for extended printing (the XL print cartridges are larger than the regular 952 and 953 cartridges and hold more ink).

As others have said, very poor print quality on 11x17 prints. I have been sent two replacement print heads and an entirely new printer, all with the same lines across the page every inch. HP just wants to keep replacing the print heads claiming "the new one wont have any issues..." Clearly there is a design or firmware flaw with this model, which is really unusual for HP. Update: My second warranty replacement printer has arrived with the exact same printing issues...

Despite using a setting to print black & white only this HP printer model is designed to mix in a color anyway. Printer cartridges have a chip that can prevent the HP 7740 from printing. When the cartridge chips decide it is time to buy more cartridges I couldnt print a thing. I owned this HP printer for only six months and nearly spent the price of the printer for cartridge replacements because the printer wouldnt work without all colors newly installed. I can still hear ink splashing around in the so called empty cartridges but had to buy more to keep the printer operating. I have replaced this HP ink jet printer with a laser printer that is not an HP brand. Based on my low home use level and the absence of printer controlling chips, I expect to work uninterrupted. Too bad, I was a long term HP product user.

I have had a series of HP printers as of late. All wide-format. AIO printers. A 7510 - that died. A replacement 7612 - that died soon after the warranty expired. And this 7740 that I just installed...after considerable difficulty. Mind you, Ive been around computers since the early 80s and have built/installed wired and wireless networks. Dont know why HP makes things so bloody difficult. First off, Amazon was great. Ordered Monday, here Wednesday AM. And the rest of the day was spent getting the fool thing to work. The installation disc failed. The downloaded install wizard failed. Tech support never answered, though a chat with support did get things going. Secondly, photo quality is a huge - and I mean HUGE - step backwards. HP printers used to be well-known for photo quality output, but this one has obvious and annoying banding in each image, even when using HP-branded glossy photo paper. Text quality is fine and fast, but comparing current photos to those printed on earlier HP printers, they aint in the same ballpark - or state for that matter. HP has seen a big drop in product QC as of late - which is all too evident in photo quality. I could have bought a Brother or Epson for half as much to get photo quality this bad. Unfortunately, this is one of the few printers that met my requirements: wide format, with full size, 11x17 scanning/copying/reducing. The 7720 has wide format printing, but only 8.5 wide scanning. Ive had HP products for decades. An HP 4P laser printer from 1990 still works great, but this will be my last HP product.

I just returned the second one I had ordered. Neither printer would print color 11x17 with enough quality suitable for presentation of architectural plan sets. Printed with stripes every inch across rendered view from Revit design software. I discussed with HP and they had no solution. Ive gone back to using my older HP OfficeJet 7610 for 11 x 17 and an 8600 for 8.5 x 11. So much for trying to replace 2 printers with 1. I am really disappointing in HP on the 7740. I would not recommend buying this printer if you intend to print 11x17 rendered views from Revit.
