Why one star for a printer that actually does a good job of printing almost one copy per second? Because when the "toner low" message appears, you MUST install a new cartridge on this model, even though the last copy you printed looks perfectly black. Brother printers used to have a "toner continue" mode that you could use when "low toner" appeared (and apparently many of their models still do). They simply said that in that mode the quality of the printing would decrease the longer you continued, which makes sense. However, as many others have noted, there is often enough toner in a "low toner" cartridge to print hundreds more pages of perfectly acceptable quality. And maybe what Im printing doesnt have to be "top quality" and I would just like to get it printed! With this model, Brother no longer offers the "toner continue mode" (as a Brother customer service rep apologetically informed me), forcing you to stop in the middle of print job, and waste time and money installing a new cartridge. Im very unhappy with this!

I bought this for my home office a few months ago. Out of the box, it was great - easy to set up, straightforward to use, prints quickly and clearly. I bought the high capacity toner so I could get more life out of it. Now, at 10pm on the night before I have to go to court, the printer decided its out of toner and STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY. Never mind that it was printing perfectly fine, and never mind that I havent even printed two packs worth of paper yet. It insists its out of toner, and nothing I can do (resetting the drum counter, covering the sensor, trying any of the other hacks online) will change its mind. This is a waste of money and resources, and a huge hassle. Brother has gotten too greedy. Making the printer useless until you feed it more toner isnt the way to win over customers. Update: I purchased the high yield toner. Its 6:15am, and Im printing some last minute documents for an important presentation this morning. Guess what - the printer has decided its low on toner, so it will stop any minute. Im just hoping I can get through the documents I need before it quits working. I would 100% prefer to have lower quality documents rather than NO documents. Looks like Ill be scrambling to print at FedEx or something.

**DO NOT BUY*** I would rate this printer with zero stars if that was an option. When brand new, this printer will work beautifully. It is a fast printer, and I love the auto duplex. HOWEVER... eventually your pages will start to be creased. At first it may be a page here and there with a small crease. The crease will get larger over time. The crease in mine finally got to the point that I called Brother about it. They agreed to ship me a REFURBISHED unit in a warranty exchange. I got the refurbished printer, started printing, and within a few days my pages were printing with a crease. I called Brother again. They did another warranty exchange for a refurbished unit. Within a hours of using the new printer, I again had a crease, and this one was worse than the crease on the previous 2 printers and ran the length of the page. Called Brother again requesting a different solution as it appears obvious that.this printer has a flaw. Well, apparently they cant offer an alternative solution until you have had 3 warranty replacements. So they shipped me another refurbished which I received today. I plugged up refurbished replacement #3 this afternoon and printed a test page. The first page out of the printer was creased. After banging my head on my desk, I once again called Brother and asked whether Brother even bothers to print a page before on these refurbished warranty replacement printers before shipping them. Obviously not. I had to go through their steps again to ensure they couldnt fix the issue over the phone. And as I knew would be the case, the pages continued to print with a crease. So now they are escalating me to another department, and I am waiting to see what they will offer. Several printer repair businesses have responded to this issue online that the problem is the fuser. I mentioned that to Brother and requested they send me a new fuser rather than a replacement unit. They have no reports of fuser issues with this printer, so they declined to do so. Whatever the issue is which causes the creases, I have no experience it with 4 different units of the same model printer. Do yourself a favor... do not order this model. Im attaching a photo and have use a hi-lighter to mark the beginning and end of each of the 3 creases on the page.

This printer is a workhorse and prints extremely fast. It was simple to hook into the computer and Internet also. The printed copies are exceptional. I am a Notary who prints 2 sets of loan packages per client for a total of 44 sets per month. Each set is approx 150 pages. This printer makes my job easier.

Great printer. I have it connected to my home network, and we can all print easily from anywhere in the house or property. The brother iPrint app is a bit slow to load documents on our android phones, but is a great timesaver over resending documents to an email address, and then going to the computer to download and print off. Other reviewers mentioned a grainy effect. I noticed this, but it evidently is related to the break-in process for the drum. The grainy effect completely resolved on its own within the first 20-25 sheets. Now the print is crystal sharp black with clean sharp edges. Dont let this complaint deter you from this printer.

Printer would automatically print on tray 2, which is legal for me, when tray 1 which is letter ran out. As a business this is bad. Sales told me this is just the printer. So, Brother Technical Support just called me, they called me!! That is unheard of. Anyways, a setting on the printer itself called auto-continue is on by default. It must be off to stop the paper from automatically switching to legal when our of letter. Thank you Brother!!!!

I had a previous Brother laser printer (HL-5250DN) that was a solid workhorse for ten years. I used it in my home office and it had great print quality and the toner cartridges seemed to last forever. (I got an off-brand refilled cartridge once, but went back to Brothers own cartridges as they gave the best quality results and lasted the longest). Towards the end the paper feed began to jam with paper stuck halfway through printing. I suspect it was the drum unit reaching the end of the line. When the paper finally refused to feed at all, I decided it was time for a new printer. I could have replaced the drum unit, but that would have cost more than half the price of this new printer. After a month of use, I am happy with this printer, which was the closest I could find to what I had previously had. I mainly chose this model because it came with Wi-fi built in (the HL-5250DN did not, and I had it hard-wired with ethernet to our home network), and it had the option of using super high-yield toner cartridges, which many other models did not. On the whole it appears to be another winner from Brother. Some reviews have complained about heavy electrical draw, but Ive not experienced that. We live in an apartment building built over 100 years ago, with not great wiring, and I have had no problem with the printer. I give this 4 instead of 5 stars only because 1) it takes longer to print the initial page than my former printer (though it then kicks out additional pages at a fast clip), 2) the initial page sometimes (but not always) has an annoying small crease running halfways up the page (I need to trouble-shoot whats up with that), and 3) it is kind of loud in printing. I consider those minor issues. Set-up was much more of a breeze than I expected. I did go to the Brother website and downloaded the latest drivers, but also used the included CD of drivers and set-up wizard and it found our home network Wi-fi and that was that. We have my Mac and my wifes PC on our network and both work fine with it. Weve even printed from our iPhones and my iPad to it, which was a nice touch. Bottom line: am I pleased? Yes.

Great at first, now, when I try to install a new toner cartridge, the "Replace Toner" message remains on the screen and the unit does not operate, Ive tried EVERYTHING, spent a whole day trying to fix it. To make matters worse Brothers Customer Support is among the worst in the business by far. Stay far, far away.

This is a decent printer, and it does what I need it to do, which is to print according to document size and choose letter or legal from the paper trays, depending upon the paper size of the original documents being printed. I upgraded to this one from a HL6180DWT, which I purchased in 2013, three and a half years ago. That one was printing fine but had started to get more and more paper jams until one day the paper jam damaged the reel in the back of the machine. I was able to clear the jam eventually but decided it was time for a new printer. I print about 300 pages at a time, several times a week, and so it gets quite a bit of use. There are two negatives with this machine as I see it. One is that it tells you that you need to replace the toner way too soon, but you can reset this by pressing down the Secure and X Cancel buttons together and using the up button. You can replace the toner when the print copy you get indicates that it is time. The other negative feature is, if you run out of paper in one tray, it automatically switches to printing from the other tray. That may not be a negative if you have letter size paper in both trays. That feature can be ruinous in my line of work. I have since learned that you have to use the printers menu to turn off "Auto Continuous" to disable this. Updated June, 2017: I did have a problem with Tray 2 not working correctly. There was a thumping noise when drawing from Tray 2, and it would say that there was no paper in Tray 2 when there was. After this error happened, Tray 2 disappeared from the settings. It happened several times, and I had to call Technical Support, and they had me delete the entire driver package and reinstall it, and that worked until the next time it happened. I ended up returning the machine and buying another one with the hope that it doesnt happen again.

Were a homeschooling family with a small business as well, so our printer gets a lot of use. This is our second attempt with this particular model. The first one we received seemed to have been a bit of a "lemon" with frequent issues with ink splatter and wrinkled/creased pages. Amazon was great to work with on getting a return/replacement. This one is working better, but it still has some ink splatter and creased pages issues--just not as frequently. Overall, the printer works well. Its quiet, prints FAST, and the bypass tray works really well for cardstock, etc. In addition, the print quality is excellent--crisp and clear (with the exception of occasional splattering on the first page of print job.) Our previous experiences with Brother printers tell us that this will be a cost effective model for printing large quantities of BW pages. The ink splatter issue: Just realize that on occasion, you may need to print a second copy of the first page of whatever you were printing if its important that it be blemish free. For us, the majority of our printing is for personal/internal use, so a few ink splatters here and there are more irritating than problematic. Obviously, that may not be your situation, so just be aware that its out there. Update: The issue with ink splatter/gray smear has become more persistent as the weeks have gone on. Its very disappointing. Were returning it and will be researching a different option for our family. :/
