For this MFCL2710 and other newer models of Brother MFC models (as well as DCP models) the printer must use a toner cartridge (TN730 or TN760) that has a proprietary chip on the toner cartridge. This makes it impossible to buy third party toner except toner that requires that you pop the chip off of a Brother-manufactured toner cartridge (TN730 or TN760) and stick it to the third party cartridge. Even then, the price of those third party cartridges is twice the typical price for third party cartridges that do not require the chip. Make SURE that you research the market for toner cartridges before you buy a Brother printer. Google third party toner for MFCL2710 vs cartridges for MFCL2700 and compare prices and requirement for proprietary chip on cartridges for MFCL2710. The older MFCL2700 can use third party TN660 toner cartridges that cost far less than the Brother-manufactured toner cartridge, and often half the cost of a third party TN760-equivalent toner cartridge. The TN660 cartridge does not have the chip, and the MFCL2700 does not require a cartridge with the chip attached to it.

Money Scamming Machine. I normally love Brother products but on this particular model, they FORCE you to replace the toner when it says it is low, when you CLEARLY have tons more printing that can be done from it. Once it give you the warning, it flat out refuses to print and will only do so once your replace the toner. Will not be buying any more Brother products from now on.

This printer is fantastic, works great, and super easy to setup. Most of the negative reviews here have to do with wifi problems. If you dont do it right the first time youre gonna have a bad time. So LISTEN UP: You cant connect to the printer wirelessly by hitting the wifi button. You must go to the website at support.brother.com and download the software. Theyre very easy to understand. You must FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS on their website in order to do this correctly. Additionally, this printer doesnt come with a USB cable so if you are wanting to connect via usb you must have an old one lying around the house, or borrow one from a friend, or buy one. Theyre very cheap and easy to come by these days.

I bought this unit strictly based on how happy I have been with my other Brother printer. I was using a monochrome brother laser printer strictly for printing text documents, and an HP ink jet all in one for copy, fax, and scan. I finally got sick and tired of getting ripped off for ink jet cartridges; the HP was killing me and the Brother just kept printing and printing without the need to constantly replace the toner. When the toner light on the Brother would finally come on, I would simply reset it and it was set for another few months, I must have done this at least two times before finally replacing the toner; this equated to months of double sided printing. So when the HP ran out of ink again, I decided to buy a single all in one to replace the other two, and there was no question I was getting the Brother. Since this is a new model and there were no reviews, I read the specs on the Brother website and saw that it had everything I was getting from the two separate units--except for color which I hardly used--but in one set up. I can tell you that this printer is very quiet, fast, takes up very little space, and feels solid and well made. I could not be happier with its performance, speed, functions, and options, and the set up could not have been easier. I wanted mine set up wireless, and the Brother software walked me through in just a few minutes; just make sure you follow the step by step instructions. And if you have any concern about the notorious noisy Brother cooling fan, dont worry, Brother must have been listening because this unit is quiet as a mouse. This is an awesome printer and the money I will save on ink will pay for this printer in no time. Goodbye ink jets.

Edit: In other words, press menu, select option 6 "network settings", select "WLAN" settings, select your wifi, input password. If you are connected to the wifi but the printer now has problems connecting to your computer, the issue most likely lies in your firewall. I had bitdefender firewall and could not connect until I disabled that. At one point, even the default windows 10 firewall prevented me from connecting. If you cannot connect, try disabling your firewall and that should resolve the issue as long as your printer and computer are using the same wifi. Just got this printer for Christmas and have to say it has very misleading WLAN setup instruction. Youll notice a lot of 1 star reviews mention not being able to connect to the wifi. The printer has a large wifi button that, when pushed, asks if you want to connect to the wifi. If you say yes, it tries to connect before eventually timing out. The printer then prints a page long trouble shooting page that only talks about router settings, turning the printer on, and moving the printer closer to the router. Ultimately the issue was that the printer never said it wasnt connecting because my wifi requires a password, something you would expect in pretty much any device connecting to wifi. Their trouble shooting made no mention of how to manually select which wifi you want to connect to and input its required password and instead pointed users toward fiddling with their router settings. Their instructions for printer setup gave no mention of this either. For those of you running into the same issue I did, you can select your wifi and set it up using the setup wizard which is in the WLAN settings which are in the network settings which are option 6 of the menu. Instead their instructions just say to push the button and youre all set. The printer itself is fine and gets the job done.

For the price, this is a pretty comprehensive all-in-one. It doesn’t excel in all areas, and the build quality is more suited to home use than office use, but it does bundle together a decent mix of features at a very good price. Setup: Very straightforward. Basically just take it out of the box, pull off the tape that holds the parts in place for transit, install the toner cartridge and you’re done with the hardware. It comes with a easy to read quick setup poster than walks you through all the steps. Build quality: For the price, not bad. It is not built for heavy-duty use. This is a printer where you need to take care when taking the paper tray in/out or opening/closing the scan bed. It’s best suited to home use or very light office use. The trays and frame are lightweight and won’t take kindly to getting banged around in a busy office. The footprint is pretty compact and I like that there are no output trays sticking out. Prints land in a “cubby” under the scanner platen. User interface: Very basic, but clean and simple. It has a small LCD screen that is reasonably clear. It can’t display much in terms of messages without scrolling. All the buttons are clearly labeled, but are also mostly small, rubbery and don’t provide much feedback. The paper tray holds a good amount (claimed capacity of 250 sheets) and easy to load. There’s a single-sheet bypass for things such as labels. Operation sounds are mostly hushed, with the loudest sound being paper being drawn from the tray. Its quiet enough that it cant be heard in use from an adjacent room. Software setup: To get it operational for PC or network use, you need to install the Brother software. If you’ve used any other Brother products it will look and feel very familiar; if you have not, it’s very straightforward. Just follow the prompts. The Brother software is comprehensive with regard to printing/scanning options and easy to use. There is an online manual, but if you have even basic PC experience it won’t present a challenge. It supports both direct-connect and network printing. I didn’t encounter any setup difficulties with either. Print performance: Not bad. It’s clear but not razor sharp, especially with graphics or very small text. It’s perfectly fine for printing text files and basic graphics (e.g., pie charts, etc.). It’s not great with photos but then again, since this is a B/W printer, it’s not a great choice for photos anyway. Copying: I was surprised at all the features it has. For example, it has a button dedicated for ID copying – it allows you to copy both sides of an ID card/licence on a single sheet of paper. It can also turn 1-sided originals into 2-sided copies and vice versa. There are a wide number of format options available – much more than I expected. The only real drawback is that the ADF is single-sided only. If you want to copy double sided originals you have to do it one side at a time using the glass top. Scanning: Does a decent job, and the Brother software provides for a range of tweaks that cover most of the common situations. Scans came through cleanly and were turned into PDF files. Faxing: Could not test it since it’s been years since I sent or received a fax. Toner: It comes with the TN-730 which is spec’d for 1,200 pages. It can also use the TN-760, which runs for 3,000 pages. Amazon carries both and the prices are not bad. The 760 is the better value, but if you are a light volume user, the 730 is a less expensive option. Loading the toner is simple. It is self-contained – no other consumables (such as a drum unit) need to be replaced. Rating: It’s a solid 4-star product. While I don’t expect the moon and the stars at this price point, the lack of a double-sided ADF is a real drawback. The print quality for graphics, while perfectly fine for everyday use and basic business correspondence, is not as sharp as other laser printers at the same basic price point. But the overall bang for the buck is definitely here, so it should be on the short list if you’re looking for an inexpensive, home-use laser that can handle printing, scanning and copying (and faxing, if that’s something people still do!).

Nothing but problems with wireless printing and scanning: - Printer regularly goes into deep sleep where Google cloud print and AirPrint no longer function - Scanning over WiFi spontaneously fails, especially with higher-res scans. This is especially annoying when half-way through scanning a large document. Update September 2017: WiFi has gotten even worse than before. For the last few months I have to cycle the printer immediately prior to printing for my computer to establish a connection. Without fail, the connection drops again within a few minutes of powering on the printer.

This printer goes into Deep Sleep mode almost immediately after a print job, and then will not "wake up" when you send a print job - I have to manually restart the printer to wake it up. Also, the printer goes offline and wont connect to the my network any time my networks IP address changes (every 2-3 days), and then has to be completely reinstalled. The Brother technician told me that this will continue to happen unless I obtain a static IP from my internet service provider, which is costly and only available for business (as opposed to residential) accounts. The technician said he gets calls about this issue all the time. Yet Brother has no solution, other than to spending 60+ minutes on the phone with a technician and re-downloading software/firmware and reinstalling the printer each time my IP address resets (every 2-3 days). When this printer works, its great. But it rarely works.

Dont get this printer unless you only use Brother toners. It is programmed to not play nice with generic toners, giving all sorts of pop ups and errors, telling you about a hundred times a day to purchase genuine Brother toner. Yeah, in a busy office thats like another car payment! Were going back to our very forgiving Samsung printer, which uses any toner you can throw at it. This Brother goes to the store room as a back up, or maybe the janitor can sell it for gas money.

I tried to like this printer, but i had to return it. Did firmware update, connected via hardwire lan connection, found a way to turn off the deep sleep, everything, still when it didnt print for a while it would take between 20 seconds and 1/2 hour to print something. That it totally unacceptable considering my Brother 2270DW wakes up and prints in less than 5 SECONDS!. So I bought a drum and toner for it and am going back to it. Good thing I didnt throw the 2270DW away.
