I think the people who had trouble with this machine forgot to read the instructions, including the inserted sheet that covers the hardware upgrade to achieve region-free capability. The first thing I did after testing that I could playa simple Blu-Ray after setting up for my monitor and wi-fi was to upgrade the firmware. Then, one after another I inserted all the 4K discs I own, to be sure they played properly - They did - followed by a variety of Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray 3D, and DVD discs. All played fine - No problems. Then I tried some Region B Blu-Ray discs: I turned off the machine, pushed the blue button until it restarted, and waited for it to load. The Region B disc played properly, too. This is a great player!

A nice, solid piece of equipment - made mostly of metal (which is a requirement for me - no cheap plastic). Set-up is fairly easy, particularly if youre used to this sort of equipment. I bought this primarily for the Region Free function - not the UHD/4K (which was a nice add-on for me). If you dont own a 4K TV set, be aware that youll most likely have to "dumb down" the TV input from this player to a low resolution to watch anything on it (theres instructions for this in the manual). That being said, I watched a Region B blu-ray and it looked just fine. The region selection is easy to work - one color on the remote for each region. The player stays in the region youve selected even after turning it off. Just be careful not to lose or break the remote! My only complaint is the lack of physical buttons and front display, which may be more of an issue to some than others. Overall, a very satisfactory purchase.

When I play a 1080p DVD in this blue ray player, clarity is not as good as compared regular Sony DVD player which is 13 years old I purchased this to avoid too many devices, This is not meeting my expectations

This Sony X800 will play anything you throw at it. I primarily bought it to play the surround sound features of my SACD collection. I have a beautiful Marantz Ruby SACD player, but with any Audiophile equipment, it plays 2-channel stereo only. The Sony X800 (which is 1/10 the price of the other player I have) lives up to the task of the surround sound quality. It plays all video discs well...most of the time. It does play all video formats and regions from all over the world. There is a sheet included that explains the alteration to the stock unit to make it region-free. I took off a star as the player does the job well, bang for buck, most of the time. I have struggled with the firmware 3 times now. Had a North American BluRay disc in the player as we were watching it in segments (Buster Keaton film shorts). I ejected it to play something else and when I put it back in the player, it rejected the disk as an unplayable format. Reset the player to factory state and after switching out several discs, it played the Buster Keaton disc again. Weird! However, the player is well worth that little trouble...I work with firmware issues for work, so I quickly recognized the issue. The Sony X800 has many features aside from playing all sorts of formats. All the popular services such as SiriusXM and Spotify are available from this player. I do like the SACD playback on this unit. As the format gains momentum thats been partly stalled since its development, one will appreciate the quality of the audio on this player. This is what CDs should have been from the start.

Great product goes above and beyond on performance. The only things that are a negative are... The remote is small and looks/feels cheaply constructed. But functions without problems. The other is that the main menu looks cheap but functions without error. Overall a great product though.

The player is incredibly free of areas for both dvd and bluray my surprise was when I turned it on that has no display there is a screen in the player that tell you elapsed time or in which track number is the disc only has a small green light it also has only two HDMI outputs one for video and another audio and a coaxial output so if you want to use it to connect it to a sound mixer the answer is no you can not have RCA outputs is a player that can only be used to connect to the TV and the amplifier the rest everything is good is 110/220 volt. and correctly read all zones

Picture quality is EXCELLENT! Plays ANY DVD and Blu-Ray I can throw at it, even ones from other countries that wont play ANYWHERE ELSE! BUT the lack of Dolby Vision is unacceptable! BUY THE CHEAPER x800 or even the x700. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

So far I am more than satisfied with this dvd player. The Samsung it replaced would not play the new BR dvds although it played the old ones. The player is easy to use and has a much sharper image with great sound.
