My Canon all-in-one printer died after more than 5 years of use, but it had never printed color graphics to my satisfaction, so I replaced it with this all-in-one from Brother. I made this choice based on customer reviews and 4 different rating lists. Pros: The printer was incredibly easy to set up. The screen on the machine walked me through the process and it may have been the easiest set up of any electronic devise I have ever used. The paperwork provided in the both supplied a web address with easy to follow instructions that allowed a simple, but not fast, loading of the software drivers for every device in the house. The printer does an excellent job with black ink on white paper. Both single and double sided documents are produced quickly with crisp text and a beautiful presentation. Cons: While the printer is great for documents in black, it does not print colors well. Colors are muted and dull… as if the device was being stingy with the ink rather than there being an issue with the color of the ink. Purple prints in an especially low level of color saturation. The ink shows no gaps or breaks, but is not true to the color on the graphic. The particular file I am using as a comparison was printed on my company’s printer and my home printer. The print from work shows a rich vibrant purple, the print from home gives the impression that the same color was bleached by the sun all summer long. The printer does not automatically adjust to different thicknesses of paper stock. The test that I used was plain paper and label paper. This is an easy adjustment on the printer’s screen that only takes seconds, so I think this is more of an FYI than a con.

Pros: + Almost Flawless Setup, pretty EASY overall (with one point, see notes below) + CHEAP Price: You will pay $55+ more for a similar model anywhere else + TINY footprint, this is a little model that does everything you need for an 8.5x11 Cons: - The WEIRDEST usb cable location that you will ever find. You have to open the scanner (under) to find the plug, then make sure that your cable is wrapped around inside the model and tucked closed. Its weird. There are LINKS/vids on youtube, watch one of those. They will walk you through it. (The directions that you get with the printer do not cover this well). - Noise. It is not a quiet printer. You hear all of it, even the wheels turning. So.. keep that in mind when you decide where you want to put it. Overall, its a nice little desktop printer. It does what it needs to do, and they currently have a VERY fair price on it. Its good for general desktop stuff, and at a price-point that makes it a good buy. EDIT: If you are using this printer to print Art images.. think again. I have tried everything to get it to print quality images and it does not. This is a printer for text, articles, etc. NOT for images. Know that.

Its nice having a printer that works the way you want it to. After using a Brother L2340D laser and having no issues we needed to replace our old HP Officejet K8600TN. We have a mixed OS environment and seemed like we were having to often transfer projects to a PC to get it to print correctly on the HP 8600. Its old and a tank but we always had issues that would infuriate the most docile individual. The menus on the Brother are responsive on the touch screen color display. Setup was a breeze on all devices. The built in scan to OCR is nice and fast. The unit wakes instantly, no sluggishness at all. Was impressed they had Win10 64 bit drivers right away. This unit was just released so that makes sense I suppose. I use the Google Cloud print a good bit from my Android phone and its great. The NFC function basically just starts the Brother iPrint app or sends you to a link to download if tapped. I like the WiFi feature better though for mobile devices. Scanning to your phone is really nice for something you need quickly on the go. Also one thing I noticed that I dont see often on Inkjet printers is when canceling a print job the Brother J880DW cancels it immediately without fuss. Im use to HPs and others grinding for 2 minutes or even having to unplug power to get them reset. The only thing some people may have trouble with is the 4x6 photo paper tray. You have to slide it back when you want to print on this size manually and then back for 8.5x11. Its kinda cool you can keep it loaded with this size paper ready to go though. This printer seems to do photos way better than I thought it would for the price. The 880 and 885 are the same except the 880 has a fax built in. If you do not need a fax then the 885 may be for you. I purchased this unit before it was apparently released or in stock at Amazon because it was a replacement for the renowned 870. Pros: Easy setup, supports everything you would want and for the price does better than expected picture quality. Drivers seem equally featured on all operating systems. Compact. Lots of scan to functions from the touch screen. Cheaper priced ink cartridges than some others. People like my dad would appreciate the full printed manual included with the printer to hold in hand as he watches TV and "studies up". Most are on PDFs on the disk included. Cons: Being very critical, as there is not much not to like about this model. Possible confusion on the 4x6 push back tray for some that dont read instructions. Small paper tray. Print cartridges look small. I just received the 880 and time will tell how long they last and if the cheaper price to yeild ratio compared to larger cartridges of other models.

Im a technical writer who works fulltime from home. After dealing with higher end Epson and HP printers for many years, I bought this MFC-985DW several weeks ago. I spent $100 instead of the $300 I would have spent to replace the Epson WP-4630 Id been fighting with for 6 months. Extended warranty and ink costs are a fraction of those for the Epson, and the Brother software works better. I hooked it up, downloaded the latest, and it just works. Cant say the same for my recent Epsons, neither one of which held up for more than 2 years. The Brother is a little slower, but print quality is comparable and the much smaller footprint is a major bonus for my home office. I can print, copy, scan, and fax without problems, and connecting from my iPhone and iPad worked without issue, which again was not true for the Epsons. So far, so great. And Im very please. And glad to no longer be fighting with my multifunction device.

I have had a home office since 1996 and have bought several printers, all-in-one, colour, although I have a separate fax machine. I received the printer from Amazon.com last night at 6:00 p.m., and proceeded to install it immediately because I had documents that needed to be printed urgently. I printed the test page FOUR TIMES, but the yellow colour was always completely missing. I followed the instructions to "clean" the printer heads, to no avail. All the manufacturers of the printers I previously owned had a number dedicated to help consumers install their printers. Brother DID NOT HAVE A TECHNICAL SUPPORT NUMBER WRITTEN ANYWHERE! Unlike the Canon I replaced after 9 years of use, whose page support automatically opens when the machine is copying/printing, this printers page support has to be manually opened. The paper drawers holders (green, cheap plastic) are difficult to adjust. I thought they would break. I was installing it last night because I had urgent documents I needed printed. I "chatted" with a representative by the name of "Luciano". HE WAS OF NO HELP WHATSOEVER. I searched on the Internet for "Brother printers technical support" and they were all from third parties, suspicious, unknown. I spoke to a supervisor this morning. I followed the steps she instructed me to perform, after which she informed me that the yellow cartridge needed to be replaced. THESE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE NEW CARTRIDGES! I told her that I wanted all the cartridges to be replaced, as they were obviously old, and more would dry out. She refused, she would only replace the yellow cartridge. She further stated that I should have bought the printer from Brother, not from Amazon.com

I havent read all 451 reviews for this printer, but rather than just heap yet more praise upon it, Ill mention a few things I didnt see in those I did check. It has an internal power supply and a plain old normal AC mains power cord. This means no giant lump that blocks the outlets on either side of the surge protector when its plugged in. And no giant lump in the middle of the cable from there to the printer. This was the most welcome thing for me. The single sheet feeder, as used when printing labels, is very, very precise. As opposed to my old HP printer, where it was always a crap shoot and I would use about two times as many label sheets. Watching and listening to this printer lining up the label sheet is a joy to behold. Heh. The ethernet and USB jacks are inside the printer. You have to lift up the top to access them, and theres only enough space to run one cable at a time to the outside world. That said, the wifi works very well, and is what Im using now. It handles LONG pass phrases fine. It is, however, only in the 2.4 GHz band. I bought the MFC-J880DW instead of the MFC-J680DW for the ethernet, but as it turns out I really dont need it. Also beware that on Amazon the MFC-J680DW is listed as having ethernet. It definitely does not. The Brother software installs painlessly on both macOS 10.9.5 and 10.12.6. When doing the initial setup, the yellow in the test pattern is not so easy to see. Selecting the clean the printheads and try again does not make it any darker, but it does use lot of ink. "Lot" here means close to one third of the color cartridges supplied with the printer. Printing actual images with yellow in them looks fine. This is a very well made printer, and the manuals are quite clear and easy to follow. Im definitely more than happy with it...!

This printer was a huge disappointment. I treated it well and tried contacting Brother for support, but never got any assistance and eventually gave up. After Id had it about a year, with moderate use, it started to claim repeatedly that I had to clean the printer heads. Literally every other time I was printing the job would stop and the printer would claim the print heads were jammed. Brother Support had no help for me, just explaining the process of cleaning the printer heads, which I already knew how to do, having done it so many times. I was using name-brand ink cartridges, to no avail. Next up came the interminable paper jams. Out of nowhere this became the new problem: every other print job, the paper would become jammed. I would free it, try printing again, it would print, and then next time, jammed again. So frustrating and no solutions offered.

I previously had a HP 6700 all-in-one printer. Very large and noisy. Then it crashed and could not be recovered.. I switched to the Brother all-in-one. Smaller. MUCH quieter. More functionality to manage print results. LOVE the multiple scan options. MUCH easier to address envelopes than with the HP 6700. Wireless, wireless, wireless. My first impressions are very positive. Ill update my review if anything changes. The more I use it and the associated computer print options screens - the more I like it.

This is the way I wish most printers would be. The set up is simple to complete and you are printing in no time. Wireless printing a snap. Once you use a computer to set it up, you only need to turn on the printer to used it with other PCs which you have loaded up the software. Print cartridges are simple to install and no doubt replace. I like Brother because they work and are reasonable to maintain, unlike HP which I will never buy again due to what I perceived as ink carts that are proprietary and dry out fast by design. Fast buck became more important than customer loyalty. Not the case with Brother printers. Ink is set for economy printing, but you can choose to increase the ink use for higher quality images to great effect. Another plus is the capabilities of this printer without an overly large foot print needed.

My first brother printer lasted for 8 years and died. The price was a bargain (about $40) so I didnt expect it would last 8 long years :) The software quality on Brother is way better than HP printer I had. I dont recall a time that the printer required a reset to work. Third party ink could be purchased at lower price. My new printer has been running more than 2 month now, print quality is good and has no issue so far. Once connected to the network, it notifies you about the new software is available. Happy with the purchase.
