2/10/17: Works for regular DVDs as well as Blu-ray disks. Plays my disks from the UK (region B), havent tested other regions. Comes with instructions for changing regions, automatically detects DVD regions 0-8. Came in its box, but I have a parcel locker so that didnt bother me (see pictures). The player is small, only a little bigger than a DVD/Blu-ray case (also see pictures). Comes with all the necessary cords, isnt wireless and isnt advertised as such (in reference to its internet connection capabilities). I love this thing thus far, and have had no difficulties using it or with any defects. I will edit this review should that change. I simply taped the instructions on top of the player.

While it plays all my British Region 2 DVDs just fine, it ran aground with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - Extended Version" from Sweden. Even after installing the latest software updates, it still wouldnt play. I had just ordered a new LG player from amazon.com, and while researching similar issues others had with that one, someone mentioned the odd way to change BD regions. I dug up a 2011 Sony BD player remote which had numerals (the remote that came in the box for this Sony player didnt have numerals), and I managed to switch the BD region codes. This is truly a design flaw in remotes for newer models. I guess someone decided removing the IMPORTANT numeral buttons would make the remote look more "artsy". At least I HAD an old Sony remote.

This review is for the SONY BDP S1700 Multi Region Bluray player. I will give it 4 stars for flawless operation so far, about three months of use but I cant rate its streaming abilities because I havent used it for that. It hasnt ever refused to play DVDs or Blurays from any region, but you do have to select A, B or C for Bluray regions. Very simple. Picture and sound quality are impressive but not the best for 4K televisions, this player has no 4K upscaling engine and my TVs upscaler is mediocre. In this regard I think all 1080p HD players are obsolete. 4K is the new standard (for now, 8K is coming eventually), but they can still be useful. DVDs look very good with this player, it has a great PAL~NTSC converter but I can see ghosting with some discs. What I really appreciate about this player is its ability to play MP3 CDs & DVDs. I have a number of classic radio series in these formats, Jack Benny, Life Of Riley, Goon Show, etc. I have a SANYO FWBP807FP 4K player that finds no readable files in these formats and the SONYs displays are great! Very informative and user friendly. Exhaustive image searches are perfect, no freezing or refusals. The 1700 does everything I ask it to do without a lingering PAUSE (II) onscreen symbol, great for screen shots! So overall a Very Good player with impressive versatility, but not the best choice for 4K televisions. Look for a 4K upscaling player, its worth a little more. Stay away from overpriced 4K UHD Multi Region players, they cost between $350-500 at this time. 4K discs are region free, you can buy a decent 4k player for less than $100 easily and a Multi Region 4K upscaling unit for $200. I would rather have two players for the price of one anytime!

This is the best DVD player! I like thats its multi-region so I dont have to worry about that when shopping for movies. I love that it has online capabilities and that I can watch my Amazon movies on it. I try to use it as much as I can because its fun to use. If you have ever accidentally ordered a movie that wasnt in the right region and been frustrated or in my case have a unique taste for foreign cinema, then you owe it to yourself to check out this DVD player. Its worth every penny.

The only good to mention about this player is that it plays all regions. Everything else you can imagine about this player sucks. The hardware. Have you ever used a computer during dial-up days? That type of pace seems blistering fast compared to the boot-up speed of this clunker. The software. The most basic procedure of connecting to the internet so you can use Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu etc is so convoluted that you have to configure the internet connection every time you start up an app. If you dont play the dance of timing correctly, by trying to start the app too soon after configuring it, for example, you can lock yourself out of all functionality and be in an endless configuration loop. (im stuck there now, which has inspired me to write this review). The remote. The teeny-tiny remote might be decent for a smaller persons hands (ladies and children) but for anyone with hands around the "large" size of gloves will find this puny remote giving them trouble now and then trying to hit the intended button. The buttons are not backlit, so good luck in low light situations - like... when youre watching tv and using this crap device. I bought this player because I need to be able to watch content from all regions. The options were limited when last I looked. If you can find something other than this player that suits your needs, I can say with confidence that you should try whatever else you can find before trying this stinking heap of dung.

Ive wanted to watch David Attenboroughs fine science and nature series for years but only had a standard Panasonic player. It worked very well except it would only play North American disks. I had a couple of spooky movies that were supposed to play too, but wouldnt. For Christmas I got this player and several Attenboroughs blu rays. I tried them all and the spookies too. Plays like a charm. And you just hit the audio button and it goes through a list of available languages so you can choose English. I only had one movie that wouldnt play English audio but it was because it wasnt available on that disk (Iranian made movie) but it had English subtitles and so was watchable. It has more stuff than I use. Ill have to check out the Apps later. Marvelous machine with a small footprint. I was able to reorganize my equipment easier since it takes up only half the space of the Panasonic. All players should be region free to stop the insanity. One other thing: it was super easy to program the remote so that it would also do the Vizio tvs volume, mute, and power features. It didnt list Vizio in its instructions but listed LG. All I had to do was hold down the red function button and the tv power button, both on the Sony remote, simultaneously for two seconds. Bingo! Done.

I have used this player for about 6 months, and now it will not play a lot of discs, not even new ones. Highly recommend you look elsewhere for a region-free bluray player.

I am very impressed with my new Sony multi-region Blu-ray player. It plays every type of Blu-ray and DVD disc available, including the homemade DVD-RW-VR discs that I made with my Toshiba VCR/DVD recorder combo. It also plays the two Caterina Valente import DVDs that I own - Caterina Valente In Concert and Caterina Valente Live 1968 CD & DVD . it also plays the PAL DVD included in the CD/DVD release The Very Best Of Cilla Black . So, I finally ordered the Region 2 U.K./European version of Glenn Millers Sun Valley Serenade , which 20th Century-Fox has yet to issue in a standard U.S. DVD or Blu-ray version. There is also a Blu-ray version of the film, but its in Spanish ( Tu Seras Mi Marido , which translates into English as "You Will Be My Husband"), and probably has Spanish subtitles, and maybe a Spanish-language soundtrack. I also ordered The Beach Boys Pet Sounds (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) , mainly to get the Blu-ray audio disc. Ill still use the Toshiba unit to record stuff off of TV and as a backup DVD player, but my primary playback choice will be my new Blu-ray player, which is proudly connected to my Yamaha stereo receiver. The Blu-ray sound is marvelous. Five stars. Thanks, Sony!

Very happy with the product. I simply removed it from the box, plugged in the power cord, the HDMI cable, put in a disk and sat down to enjoy the movie! Nothing could be simpler, Im still waiting on the bluray and DVDs to arrive from the UK which was the reason I purchased it to begin with. If I experience any problems with them then Ill update my comment. Till then, its 5 star all the way! For all the reviewers complaining that it only has a US power cord and they purchased it to take abroad to watch US movies, just buy a plug adapter or a power cord for the country of destination which theyre going to. Both are readily available on Amazon or eBay.
