Despite all the negative reviews, I decided to make a purchase anyway. Its Sony, and one of the lowest price blu-ray player out there. I got this for my mom. She only uses the disc feature and nothing else. She said it plays most of her Vietnamese discs so I would say this is a region free player. The ones that do not work. I assume they burned them wrong or there were issues with the discs. I just find those videos on the internet and re-burn them for her. She also likes the simplicity of the remote control. When I tried to set it up for her, I noticed it is much quieter and faster compared to our old Blu-ray player. I was inclined to get a Samsung due to her Samsung TV and soundbar. But then, this one has a power led indicator, and the Samsungs do not have one. It pairs with the Samsung TV just fine, and the TV pairs with the soundbar.

The refurbished model doesnt come with the latest firmware and the update fails when you try to download it. Im attempting to update it by a USB stick right now, but I feel like most people wouldnt go through this nonsense. And at this point, Im pretty sure the update isnt going to work this way either. I havent tried playing a disc in it yet; that probably works fine, so if you dont want to use the apps, feel free to buy it and...I guess ignore the firmware update notifications every time you turn the stupid thing on? Update: The firmware updated through the USB stick option, so thats nice? Would have been nicer if IT ACTUALLY CAME WITH THE CORRECT FIRMWARE IN THE FIRST PLACE OR IF IT ACTUALLY UPDATED THROUGH THE ETHERNET. Oh, and theres no digital sound to my soundbar, which is infuriating, but at least the sound comes through the RCA input. Anyway. This thing is a pain in the butt. If you have the money, spend it on a better player instead of using up your time, effort, and frustration in making this thing work and then dealing with just "good enough". Update again: Dont buy it if you want to play discs either, because the sound just randomly decides to stop working and the player needs a reboot and the disc has to be ejected and then you have to find where you were before...just seriously, buy something else. Id return the stupid thing if I werent a stubborn so-and-so and hadnt put so much effort into it already. I was considering buying one for my parents at one point (when it was just the firmware update issue and the crappy apps - and holy cow the apps are SO bad), but now that Ive found that it cant even play discs reliably? Sony should pull a Lisa and just bury them all in a landfill. Recycling is too good for them. Update the third: The firmware updated yesterday (successfully and via download) and so far its been working a lot better. But I still think if you have the money you should just buy a player that already works instead of spending hours of frustration on it.

Warning: It took a lot of work to set up this Blu-ray player to stream!! When you receive the package, there is one power supply, one remote control (no batteries), one product info sheet, one note detailing your rights on the refurbished product, and the unit itself. The unit itself seemed to be in excellent condition! Okay, why was the setup such a PAIN? 1. When you turn the unit on, you must update the software. However, they do not tell you that you must set up the Network Connections. 2. After getting the Network Connections all set, you get the message: "Internet Settings is now complete. The unit has successfully connected to the internet. Physical Connection is OK Internet Access is OK" 3. However, several attempts to update via Internet failed with the message: "Connection Status Cannot Be Confirmed Cannot Communicate With Server Please try again Later." (now I am frustrated and try the USB method of updating) 4. I went online via my laptop and went to the Sony site and found the update file 5. Can you believe it was compressed and had to be unpacked? Although I tried it packed first! 6. If you hide any previous file on your USB memory stick, AND unzip the Update file, you are finally all set. 7. Turn OFF your player and then insert your USB memory stick. 8. Turn ON your player and I was pleased it asked to update, via USB, and I did. 9. The rest of the update process went smoothly and it took about 3 minutes. 10. You can now add any of the many apps available. Whew! Seems like a lot of work to simply replace one outdated Panasonic DVD player with a newer Blu-ray player that has more apps available.

Bought this Oct. 25. Mainly to watch Netflicks etc because my tv is not a smart tv. It was my second one. The first one was returned because it kept freezing but figured it was a fluck. Sony is a great product, right? Now, Its Dec 7... Warranty ended less than two weeks ago and now its freezes constantly. Sony use to be an excellent product. Not anymore... Stuck now with a door stop designed and sold as a Bluray player..

I have had this for 3 months now and I love it. It plays all my DVD, Blu-ray, and audio CD discs. It is wired so you don’t have the radiation, interference, or performance degradations from a wireless system. I had no trouble connecting it to my ethernet network and updating the firmware. We mostly use the applications for Pandora, Amazon Prime video, Netflix, and YouTube. This week, we loaded up an external USB drive with Mpeg and VOB video files, and MP3 and AIFF audio files, and all of them played great. The only bad thing is that the user interface is slow, but we do not care at all because the unit is so low priced and works so well.

After receiving the product, I tried hooking it up and found that the cord they sent didnt fit the input slot. I sent them three messages before receiving another cord, which was also the wrong cord. Ended up just buying the correct one from Walmart, tried hooking it up, but found that the device itself didnt turn on even though the cord I bought was meant specifically for the product (BDP-S1700). Still no response to any of my messages. Terrible product and terrible customer service.

I am officially an old lady now. I am in IT, and I know that everything can be bought digitally now. Heck, I dont even have a lot of DVDs. And I have never in my life bought a DVD player for myself, only my parents and grand parents. I just used the one on my computers if i needed to watch a DVD. But the desktop I use as a DVD player is starting to get old (12 years), and newer computers dont have a DVD drive; and I was just not quite ready to not have a DVD player. Buying a wifi one for my Macs would have run me about $120, and this was cheaper, so I bought it. This would be great for someone without a smart TV, as it has Netflix ect. I have a Smart TV that hooks up to my iTunes, so all i needed it to do was play DVD and BlueRay, and it works great for that. I might hook it up to the internet, as most bluerays have a digital copy you can download, but works great and was small enough to hide under my TV, whichI love.

I purchased one of these for my son and it has been a constant source of frustration. It locks up and wont even eject a disk. It wont go into play mode and wont connect to the internet. I also bought one for myself with the same issues. I returned it and purchased an un-refurbished one and am hoping for better results. So far, it is basically a brick sitting on my entertainment center.

This is a nice little unit for playing Bluray and DVD. There are some minor things I did not care for the system; but overall, it is a great unit. It also seems to be able to play most video files off the USB or DVD. Some of the things I didnt care for it this system are the remote and how the system fast forward and rewind. The main control buttons for navigation seems to have the center enter button raised a slight bit higher than the surrounding arrow buttons. This is a problem because as I move my fingers around the arrow buttons for navigation, I would inadvertently hit the enter button by mistake. The other thing I also didnt care for is when I press fast forward or rewind while watching the video, the display does not provide the time line position of where I am relative to the entire video. These are really minor issues as I could simply use my TVs remote as a substitute for using this units remote navigation. As for the fast forward and rewind display issue, it can be resolved through future software update, although it did surprise me how these issues could have arisen in the first place with a company like Sony with years of experience developing electronic entertainment systems. I never had any issues with any of their remotes for other systems in the past. These mistakes they made are completely rookie mistakes that a company like Sony never should have made. One final thought on this purchase is that this is a certified refurbished unit. While I was playing a video file, the entire system locked up to a point where I could not even power the system off with the power button. I ended up having to unplug the system from the power outlet; but after powering the system back up, everything seems to work fine and it even play through the entire same video file I had prior to the lock-up. So far this only happened once. But I dont know if this is just a random glitch or a sign of something worst to come. Only time will tell. So far, I am very happy with the purchase considering the price; but a bit concern with the reliability for the long term with a refurbished unit.

Bought this primarily to use for Netflix - hasnt disappointed me. Easy to set up, easy to navigate, works as advertised. Great price, cant go wrong with less than $40 for a streaming Blu-Ray player.
