Purchased to upgrade the home theater components of a family friend, this Panasonic Blu-ray player replaces a SONY. Its improvements are its 4K support, dual-HDMI outputs, 17” wide chassis and its ease of operation. Besides the HDMI, the Panasonic has optical and coax digital outputs. It was a breeze to set up and its on-screen menu easy to navigate. Overall, it has proven to be perfect for what was required. Note: A new 4K AV receiver and a new 4K HDTV were also purchased to complete the upgrade. No Longer Recommended. UPDATE: Roughly three months after purchase, the Panasonic developed a glitch during Blu-ray play. The screen image will shut off and it’s replaced with a gray “no signal” screen. This happens after 60-80 minutes of play. Pressing the players "stop" button and then restarting it corrects the screen issue but it can repeat. So far, this problem does not occur during DVD play just Blu-ray. Player is no longer recommended.

[See update below.] I have had this player for a couple of weeks now and everything seems to work as advertised--very well. I have not tried the 3D feature since I dont have the TV to go with it. I have had one happy surprise and one not so happy one: Very Good: I have found that Netflix movies can be streamed with subtitles using the Panasonic. This is a big plus for me as I dont hear as well as I used to. I have three other Blu-Ray players and none can do this. I had always assumed that the fault was with Netflix. I wonder whether other new players can do this--it is never mentioned in the reviews I have seen. [Update: I had a chance to check out the Sony S590 (competition for the Panasonic player) and found that it, too, can display Netflix subtitles. Maybe this is a standard feature on new players.] Less Good: To my surprise, the remote cannot be programmed to make the volume control work with other-than-Panasonic TVs. Not a major thing, but it is the first time I have encountered this with a peripheral remote. So, one must have two remotes at hand to simply watch a movie. I would have taken off half a star here, but could not. One other piddling issue is that the player is very short, front-to-back, and very light. So component stacking is tough unless this unit is on top. And, the lightness means that it slides around with the lightest touch; Ill have to look for some sticky feet, I guess. On balance, I am very pleased: Quite a performer at the incredibly low cost. If any issues arise over time, Ill do an update. UPDATE: I have had this unit for several months now and it has developed a handful of glitches that force me to take off a couple of stars. On more than a few bluray disks, the machine will freeze at some point in the middle of a movie and refuse to go further. Because I mostly play Netflix disks, lack of pristine surfaces may be an issue, but I am usually unable to see any defects and cleaning does not seem to help. Further, when I try them on my Sony S90, they play perfectly. Lately, I have been having difficulties with streaming as well. The unit cannot seem to find the signal, then, when it does connect, operations slow down to a crawl. Factory resets, power-cycling, etc. are hit-or-miss solutions. I am leaving two stars because the unit is not entirely worthless; just frustrating. So far, it still plays regular DVDs just fine and the streaming functions work well about two-thirds of the time. In short, I am much less happy with the Panasonic than I was at first. This is even worse because the Sony S90 (bought about a month later and used considerably more) continues to work so well. If you are determined to have this player, spring for the Amazon two-year warranty for an extra $20. The manufacturers warranty is pretty much worthless after 90 days.

It works great for the dvds abd blu ras that I have tried thus far. I have Netfix setup and it seemed to work fine. It is very limited on its streaming services. It has utube, Netflix a weather app and something eles Im not at all familiar with. Its not noisy enough to bother once the movie starts. Seems to have good picture and audio. Loads much faster then 2009 Toshiba my daughter broke and much smaller. Much better then the Sony I had to send back because it only worked for 1 day. Update: it will not play brand new blu Rays . It says its firmware needs but has failed this update 5 times in a row. It may have taken it this last time since its playing a new movie after 30 minutes of fiddling. My 2009 Toshiba started to do the same thing until I severed its internet connection. I may try that here since I only really want this for Blu Rays & DVDs. I may update later. I have changed my stars from 4 to 1. I do not expect this kind of hassle in a disc player. 5-30-16 Update: Im changing stars which I originally had at 4 then changed to 1 & now Im returning to 4. The reason is I have had no more issues with it playing discs and Ive played a great variety of them from Blu Ray to DVD, fingerprinted by my little kids or brand new and no more issues. Im thinking the update to the firmware kicked in and has made that difference. So its not that I cant makeup my mind about it just time tested now. BWM

Ive had this player for just over 6 months. I had no complaints with it until about 2 months ago it starting freezing while playing most discs rented from Netflix. At first, I thought Netflix was sending me bad discs, and I called them about it and they were very helpful and even credited me for 1 month of service. Then it kept happening, so I put one of the "bad" discs in a Sony blu ray player I have. No problem with the Sony at all! So I called Panasonic. They had me "reset it". That didnt help. Made sure the firmware was up to date - it was. So they had me send it back for exchange. (I had to pay a fifteen dollar fee, plus I had to pay shipping to send the original one to them). They sent me the replacement. I played one Blu Ray from Netflix successfully. The next one, froze about half-way through the movie. I put it in the Sony player - no problem. So I now have had two of this model Panasonic Blu Ray Player and they both have freezing problems. The weird things is that it hasnt happened with any purchased Blu Rays. So I dont know if the problem is that the Netflix movies tend to be more roughed up, or if it is because rental versions are slightly different than retail, or what. I dont know if it is a dual-layer issue (when the player has to transition to the 2nd layer), because I was able to go to the scene selection, skip a chapter and it played out fine from that point. I certainly dont think sending it back to Panasonic (again) will help. Im thinking there is a problem with this model. Perhaps it is just a firmware issue, but Panasonic isnt saying there is any known issue. Im getting ready to give up on it and buy another Sony. ** UPDATE 6/15/2013 ** Panasonic FINALLY gave me the solution to the problem. (Not sure why they didnt tell me this the first time I called them, instead of having me send the unit back to get a replacement). They told me to add an SD card (2GB or more) into the SD Card Slot. That, apparently, gives the player more memory that it needs to properly read some discs. I added an 8GB card, and the movie that was having trouble, played through no problem. Im leaving my 2-stars since the Panasonic support failed to correctly solve the problem the first time (costing me money) and the fact that the player doesnt have enough built in memory to keep this from being an issue in the first place. But I am glad I dont have to go buy a new player. *** UPDATE 8/16/2013 *** Ive taken my rating down to 1 star. This player continues to give me problems with Netflix BluRay discs. It has no trouble with BluRay discs that I own, purchased new. I can not figure out what is causing this problem. Every one of the last few Netflix BluRays I received experienced the problem. I have switched back to DVDs from Netflix and every one of those plays just fine. This is a BluRay player! It should at least do the one thing it is made to do correctly. It does not.

So far it seems like a good solid player. The product description didn’t specify what type of outputs on the back but I have always had good luck with Panasonic so for $99 I took a chance. Was disappointed to find only one HDMI output and nothing else. Ran the player’s HDMI output to my TV and the TV sound output to my receiver. Hopefully this will give me surround sound. Otherwise this player will be banished to the bedroom.

In my experience, Panasonic has always made quality products at a fair price. I found that to be true with this player as well. I bought this player mostly to play Blu-Ray discs, which it does flawlessly. Please note this player does NOT have analog video and audio outs, or an ethernet jack for a hardwire connection. What really surprised me was how much I end up using this player for streaming video. However, you cannot add or delete apps from the web. This player comes with preinstalled apps. It does have Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Video, as well as Vudu and a couple of others I dont use. In my setup, I sometimes see video scaling up from SD in the first minute or so to full HD as advertised. I give this player four stars and not five because the only way apps get updated appear to be through a firmware update. So far, Panasonic has done a solid job in releasing new firmware to address possible issues. Ive noticed the YouTube app has been updated, for example. Im also not sure if WiFi performance (or issues associated with it) are due to the player, or my wireless setup. Overall though, Im satisfied with this player.

Bought this as an upgrade for a Panasonic DMP-BD35, mainly for the online features, and so far its been great. I dont use Netflix so I cant comment on that but I do use Amazon Streaming a lot. My internet connection is not great, 2 megabit at peak but usually in the 1.5-1.8 range. I connected the player to my wireless network and other than it being annoying to enter a password using a remote control, it was easy and done in a couple of minutes. So far I have watched several movies and probably close to 100 hours of TV shows, standard and HD, and none have been a problem. The picture and sound has always been good and there has not been any choppiness, pauses or any other interruptions. If you are expecting to be able to stream stuff using a 2 megabit or lower connection and it be the same quality as playing a blu-ray, you will be disappointed and you should lower your expectations. From my experience, playing an HD version of something with my connection is like the upconverting of a DVD. It looks a little better and a little crisper but it isnt HD quality. I wasnt expecting it to be so its not a problem. As for the actual player, its exceptional for the most part. There were several setup items that needed to be addressed before I could get the best out of the player, the TV and the disk. Stuff like having to turn on 24p, enabling some picture and sound options and the like. Nothing too hard but without doing them the playback isnt as good as it could be. Compared to my other player, the picture quality is superb. I have no complaints about that. Colors are great, clarity is great and overall its just great. But again, if you havent got the player optimized and your TV calibrated you may find you are disappointed. I havent really played around with the other apps except for YouTube. YouTube does what you would expect it to do although the interface is not that great and it can take you a little while to find things. I also dont have a 3D TV so I cant comment on that side of things. The last thing I did play around with but found it more of a gimmick than useful was the remote control app. Yes, you can control the player from your phone quite easily but there is a slight delay which makes using the remote control far easier. The only thing where it stands head and shoulders above the remote control is when you are entering text. Since you can just type it easily on the phone and send it to the player it beats having to select each letter or number one by one using the remote. Ive upgraded the firmware twice, once initially when I got it and once around the beginning of November. I didnt really notice any differences but nothing bad happened. Overall I am very pleased with this player. It does everything I wanted it to do and it does those things well. Depending on your usage and expectations your may have a different opinion but if you want to stream flawlessly via Amazon even with a slower wireless connection and play blu-ray disks perfectly then this is a great player at a great price.

The dvd player stops in mid-movie and has to be re-started and advanced to finish a movie. I bought this in December. Support cannot help me and its too late to return product. Avoid this model.

I have owned Panasonic products of all kinds for several decades due to their features and reliability. However, this disc player has turned out to be a piece of low-quality junk. The power and eject buttons have always seemed to have a mind of their own by only working when they feel like it. The last disc I tried to watch began to skip and pause until it froze permanently. After literally several minutes of trying to extract the disc, I finally got it to eject and I finished watching it successfully on another player. So it definitely was the fault of this player and not the disc. I should have heeded the warnings of some of the other reviewers and now its too late to return this player to Amazon. But whatever I replace it with will not have the name Panasonic on it anymore. If this is turning out to be the low-quality route that Panasonic is deciding to follow with its products in general, then I will be parting company with them for good. What a shame.

I have always loved Panasonic products until this one. The image is great. My nit picks are as follow: 1) There is no way to tell the current status of the movie time (hours, minutes, seconds), without burrowing several menus deep to find the correct command 2) The player boots and responds slowly 3) The main menu system is dreadfully un-obvious. Trying to find the apps can be challenging and once again requires you to go several menus deep. 4) Apps are limited. 5) For the infrared remote sensor, you have to aim the remote directly at the face of the unit. With my other audio/video components, I can bounce the IR signal off the front wall, back to the rear of the room where the components are located! 6) Often times, the unit at first says that the disk is unreadable. This is often remedied by trying repeatedly to play the disk, sometimes reinserting it into the player. My previous Samsung player was faster, displayed more relevant data, and was much more obvious to use. Really sorry I switched, and would not buy again. Not recommended!
