There is no WIFI in this unit so you must hardwire to router to get firmware updates. (But that is why the price is so good!)

The LG UP875 Ultra HD Blu-ray Player is a player for those who want a device that concentrates on its primary functions (playing movies from discs) without offering any fancy extras. The design is simple but nice, and the overall impression is that of a well manufactured item. It definitively does not look cheap despite its reasonable low price of roundabout $100. This price can be achieved because the UP875 does NOT have Wi-Fi but connects to the internet via ethernet for firmware updates only. The UP875 can thus not be used for streaming or other online features. It has rather been designed for those who wish to play movies from DVD or (4K UHD) Blu-ray discs. However, it features the possibility to connect a USB device. I have not tested this feature though. The UP875 is set up fast and easy and most standart settings in regards to picture and sound quality are just fine. Hence one can start watching movies within a few minutes. DVDs play just fine and the upscaling function does a good job. Movies look much better overall, and the picture is much smoother in comparison to a DVD played on a regular DVD player. However, please keep in mind, a movie played from DVD will never look als good as a movie played from Blu-ray or even a 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. The upscaling function cannot work wonders. Blu-ray discs also play very well and the overall quality in regards to sound and picture is very good. (Of course this also depends on the general set-up i.e. which TV set you are using and if the sound comes from the TV set or a surround system.) Navigating through Blu-ray menues during playback can be a bit inconvenient as the remote control does not have a "pop up menu"-button and thus one has to use the players "info/menu"-button to navigate to a pop up menu. However, the overall navigation works pretty well. The remote control is relatively small and very handy but still of good use for people with bigger hands (for comparison I am 61"). Unfortunately, because of its design it cannot be used well when laying flat on the table. Even though me personally misses an extra button for turning on subtitles, the remote basically has all important and necessary buttons. All in all I can really recommend the LG UP875 for all of those who just want to play movies from discs without having to spend to much time with settings and also do not need any online features.

Decent upconversion of dvds and blu-rays on my $279 TCL 4k UHD television (5+ stars), but these software-controlled blu-ray players have their glitches. I had to unplug it once already and reboot it just to get the open button to eject a disc. Worst thing is the lack of a digital coax output (orange rca) for a better and louder 5.1 signal to my awesome 2001 Onkyo digital receiver. The output signal strength from the optical line is so low on Dolby 5.1 that you have to turn up the volume (near maximum) on your 1000 watt receiver just to hear the vocals. My old $75 Toshiba went kaput in one year after upgrading the Windows Home software, and I was hoping to get a unit without the glitches of software-driven menus.
