I have an older model MX310dn that I have had for years at my office. It is a workhorse. I expect no less from this model. I purchased this newer model and actually consider the MX317dn to be a downgrade to the older model because Lexmark is not providing the high capacity 10,000 sheet toner for the unit like they did for the older model. This is why I dinged the model on this review as well as the lack of clarity in instructions as discussed below. If you want wireless printing, you will have to purchase the Lexmark MarkNet 8352 802.11b/g/n wireless card. I got lucky and found the wireless unit new for $20. The instructions that came with it are incorrect regarding the instal. It also comes with the wrong cables and nowhere in the instructions of the printer or the wireless card did it instruct me to lift up a hidden panel to the left of the info screen, slide off the cover off on the wireless unit, and install the cable to the unit that is hidden inside the printer. Ive attached a photo to show where the hidden cable is and where the wireless unit goes. I was disappointed that the scanner is not a true duplex scanner, unless I am missing how to use this function somehow. On the flip side the printer is duplex. The Good: I got this on Black Friday Weekend for $105 prints fast Duplex printer Solid build - should last for years Wireless works well - once you figure out how to install it Has drivers for Linux that utilize all functions of the printer - drivers installed automatically in Ubuntu 17.10 The bad: Lack of clear instructions regarding hidden wireless compartment No high capacity toner cartridge available at this time No wireless - you have to purchase and install it separately No mechanical duplex scanning

Copier and printer seem very good; instructions are chaotic. I havent tried scanning photos yet. Heres the good, the bad and the ugly. The copier (fairly large...more like an office printer) came with a one page (front & back) photo/symbol instruction sheet with no verbiage. I discovered 2 slightly different user guides on the web...the major difference being the connector panel configuration in the rear. Using and de-cyphering the no language, symbols only sheet, I removed all the tape (way more than the four shown on the sheet) and removed the 2 cartridges, rotated them 3X and then reinserted. I was accustomed to pulling a plastic film/tab on other cartridges; Lexmark doesnt use them but they did have a complex plastic harness on one, for want of a better description. The single, non verbiage sheet then clearly shows NOT CONNECTING the MX317 to the computer....this is INCORRECT; I assume the sheet is referring to Lexmarks other model, which is wireless and more expensive. You will need to purchase a USB (a) to USB (b) cable (search Amazon "USB to printer cable") and connect the printer to the PC. The instructions show connecting the printer cable (to a router) which wont work since this is the (cheaper) printer connected to a PC model; then the sheet instructs you to turn the printer on (step 14) and lastly inserting the enclosed CD (step 15). I assumed the CD loaded the print driver; which it does,.....BUT...it also contains the step by step instructions (30+ pages or so) in English so....INSERT the disk FIRST and follow these CD instructions...which contradict the single page hieroglyphics sheet. The CD instructs the user to NOT connect the printer cable until the last step. So...to summarize...insert the disk into your PC and follow or print out the CDs instructions. ignore the single sheet hieroglyphics unless you cant read English ..unpack and set up the printer/copier....connect the printer to your PC using a USB to printer ("A" to "B" USB) cable which you must purchase, and follow the setup/programming instructions on the CD disk.... You will also have to program the copier/printer using its "console" buttons (select language, time zone, functionality....FTP = file transfer protocol which I dont recommend: if you choose FAX...youll need to input (and have connected) a land line telephone number. Hope this commentary helps. As the other reviewers have noted, this copier/printer is a bargain unless you are wanting a wireless printer...but even that will still require two cables.

Updated: 03/20/19 Scan software SUCKS!!!! Preset PDF scan in extreme low resolution!! Everytime I have to click “Advance” to use my perferred setting. Yup. A LoT of “Click”s to get a scan job done. Terrible and un thoughtful software design. Not user friendly at all. I brought Three Canon $120 general consumer class printer. their software is way more advance than this Business class printer. Totally disappointed. BTW... the machine will frozen once a while. Only Good about this printer is speed. Great Price!! MX317DN only $160. it is a sturdy well made machine. fast printing!!! For me it is easy setup, from out of the box I got it up and running less than 10mims. only complaint is the operating software is advance level, also take up desktop space, wish they can minimzie it, something simple. the software allow me to set the printout quality to lighter, to save toners.

Hey guys, I just wanted to share my thoughts on this machine. Previous multifunction fax printer was having issues and despite it being less than nine months old (it was a canon), we had had enough and we’re looking for replacement. Years ago I owned a Lexmark printer. It served me very well, was a workhorse, and I honestly had no complaints and could not have been happier with it. When I was initially looking at this printer I was a bit hesitant. For starters, it being so heavily discounted gave me pause. I was concerned that perhaps people had experienced issues with this model and The remaining stock was being liquidated. I could not have been more wrong. After its initial set up, this machine has been the best fax/printer that we have ever had. It prints quickly with sharp text and images, spools quickly, and has a very speedy fax modem. The fact of the matter is, you won’t find a better deal on an enterprise grade machine that works so well and is so reliable. I will say that, as others have said, if you’re going to use this machine on a local network it would be important to have technical skills. I’m not using it for that purpose since I only connected to one computer. But there are apps available that allow you to print wirelessly via whatever computer you have connected to this printer or any other for that matter. It really is built like a tank. I’m pretty sure this thing could take take a couple of bullets and keep on printing. Just be aware that this is a machine intended for an enterprise environment. That’s not to say that it couldn’t be used in a home office or a small business. Just be aware that this is not a $100 inkjet that you could pick up at Best Buy. The network settings menu is for the technically inclined. With that being said, I am by no means a network engineer. I know how to set up basic Wi-Fi networks in my home and little more. When I received this MFC, I opened the enormous box and plugged in the power, tel, and USB cables and called it a day. If you do not intend to use this on a network, just know that it most definitely can be used in that way and if you do you have the know-how to establish this device on the network you can do that as well. We really have been so impressed by this machine. Lexmark can make a heck of a printer. Grab one before they are completely sold out... you won’t regret it.

I ordered two of them and they work great in a medium demand office. Pay close attention on the initial startup as you select your options. Some options are NOT available if you do not select them on the initial boot up. Then you have to reset the box to factory default to enable items like scan to email or scan to a SMB location. I almost dinged it one star for that but honestly if you take your time and read the start items rather than zipping through them you cant go wrong.

It is itself a nice all in one printer, but the whole Lexmark software were not user-friendly. I spent hours trying to install the printer, using the CD, then trying to use the online program. Each software needed to be installed to use the app was too much. I believe Lexmark is not user-friendly enough. The printer also stopped working properly after having gone through a power outage, even after re-installation. Will be returning this item.

small foot print, handles good volume of copying. Should have more printed information as opposed to having to go on line Excellent quality, Minor difficulty with drivers for windows 10 64 bit, but should recommend getting driver off Lexmark site since disc does not allow it to connect computer with printer.

This is truly the worst piece of computer equipment I have ever purchased in my life. I am not a novice to computers or computer related equipment. I can usually figure out how to get a printer working rather quickly and painlessly. This printer has been nothing but a headache since I bought it. It has never consistently been able to connect to my network with a cable. The WIFI never worked, despite hours of research. Forget trying to contact Lexmark customer support. They make it so difficult to find a number, I wish I had never wasted the time in the first place. Lexmark should be ashamed to sell a product such as this.

Operates beautifully. Fast clear copies. Easy printing with Mac OSX 10.13 even though presently only available download Driver is for 10.12. Set up instructions are not as clear as other brands (HP, Xerox) but the speed and quality of print runs circles round the HP ink jets and Xerox laser jet 6027 (to be fair, the Xerox 6027 produces Brilliant colored copies and this Lexmark is BW only). This is a great machine for a small law office like mine.
