I read LOTS of reviews of other printers before purchasing this one. I have an HP computer and wanted an HP printer to avoid any compatibility issues. Ive owned 2 HP printers previously and wore both of them out. During my search, the most frequent complaint I found was that most of the newer printers take separate color ink cartridges and will not print, even in black and white, unless all the cartridges are full, forcing users to have to change cartridges which are not empty. In my opinion, this is a rotten way for printer manufacturers to treat their customers, as the cost of ink is already ridiculous and having to remove cartridges that are not empty is pretty outrageous. Who wants a bunch of half-filled cartridges lying around? Also, the initial cash outlay for separate color cartridges is much higher than for the tri-color ones. Evidently, HP listened to those complaints, as THIS PRINTER TAKES ONE black cartridge and ONE tri-color cartridge, (#62) which runs about $32 for a combo pack. The combo pack also includes free 5 X7 photo papers and envelopes, a feature that I use a lot. If it runs out of one or more colors, it will still print. The printer itself is a good one. Copies and scans come out crisp and clean, as do photos. (I made all my holiday cards on the free photo paper this year, and they turned out very nice.) Changing cartridges is easy- you lift the lid and the glass plate, pop out the old one and snap in a new one. I do a lot of scanning and it is very easy, providing you load all the features into your computer from the CD that is included. I did NOT have to download any drivers from the internet. It also prints wirelessly, a feature that I havent used. Another common complaint was having to always print an alignment page and go through the alignment process before you could print. HP changed this too, as a box now pops up, giving you the option of aligning, postponing or cancelling alignment. You can also postpone alignment from the touchscreen on the printer. It takes all sizes of paper, and prints well on glossy photo papers. The only thing I have not tried yet is card stock. It is a bit noisy, but this is not a big deal for me. I do need to remind myself to push in the spring-loaded pop-out paper catcher when Im finished, so that I dont bump it and break it. Printing is quick on text documents and a little slower on photos, but the quality is excellent, so I dont mind the speed being a little slow. Everything you need comes in the box, but dont forget to purchase extra ink, as the cartridges that come with it contain less ink. Ive had this printer for about a month and have used it a LOT. So far, NO paper jams! All in all, I am pleased with my purchase and would recommend this printer to anyone looking for a good home or small business printer. Thanks for listening, HP!

Printer arrived July 21, 2017. Let’s get to business…I’m running full (Windows 10) on my (ASUS) laptop. Uninstalled previous HP printer properties or whatever previous printer properties you were using ...uninstall them. Then reinstall new Printer properties from Disk provided or you can (google) the downloadable applications for this printer...just google (HP Envy 5660/5640 desktop set-up application) or go to the HP website. The printer (WILL) come with (2) printer ink cartridges (black and color) just to get you started. The printer (WILL) come with the (1) power cord, but (no) USB connect cord, I used my old HP USB cord to direct connect to my laptop. I pulled my printer out of the box, directly connected USB from printer to laptop, connected power cord and turned on printer. Install the ink cartridges. The printer will give you guidance to set up ink, just read the screen. Always read your instruction booklet and study the diagram so don’t screw anything up while setting up the printer. Ink cartridges go under the scanner, you have to lift up the scanner top, see diagram. The touch screen works beautifully! Make sure to connect the printer to your (wifi), give it access to your router (wifi) network! The laptop is now directly connected to the printer, and is connected to my (wifi). At this point I inserted the disk provided for application install…however my windows 10 laptop would not read the disk. My laptop did (not) read the disk at all. I ejected and reinserted the disk again…nothing! NOTE: I had to download the desktop set up application...just google set up application for HP ENVY 5660/5640 Series or go to the HP website. Let’s go ahead and try a test print. I open a windows document, then select print... under printer properties scroll down, look for and select your new printer (HP ENVY 5640 Series). I did that and WOW! It printed like a champ! Now it’s time to test the (wifi) wireless printing…remember you need to give the printer access to your network... this is key. I walk to another room in my house, I turn on a different or (2nd) laptop that I own, to perform a (wifi) test print. On the 2nd laptop in a different room, I open a windows document... under FILE select Print, then under Printer properties select the (HP ENVY 5640 Series)…Wow! It actually worked! The printer can be (USB connected) to a computer, and still print (wifi) from another device or computer. Make sure your (drivers) are up to date, recommend (Talent Driver) application. Facts: 1. The Printer is compatible with Windows 10 because that’s all I run is Windows 10. 2. Touch screen works beautifully. 3. Printer comes with (2) ink cartridges Black and Color. 4. Does NOT come with USB connector, buy separately on Amazon. 5. Comes with a power cord. Hope this information helps, I know printers can be a pain setting up! Everything depends on what kind of computer you have and what you are running, drivers, etc…be up to date on software, there (may) be compatibility issues, research before you purchase! Happy Printing!

I bought this printer on June 1st. It is now December 15th and its useless. It worked fairly well for the first few months. Then it started telling me there was no paper in the tray. I would have to take the paper out and put it back in several times before it would recognize the paper. Today I installed a new HP print cartridge and it immediately told me that it was not a certified cartridge and printed everything so pale it was illegible. Then, it stopped recognizing that there was paper in the tray only this time I couldnt get it to decide there was paper after all. Then it suddenly spit out every piece of paper in sets of three with no printing. My daughter is trying to print out papers she is supposed fill out for school for tomorrow and we cant get this thing to function at all! Ive always used HP printers in the past but this one is not a good deal!

Not great or even good, when printing more than 3 pages at a time. Been using this printer nearly a year and after the 1st ink cartridge change, or about 100 days of use, the new HP chartriges had a problem getting ink from the cartridge to the paper when printing more than 3 pages, at which time the print quality starts to deminish. Ran the Maintenance programs to no avail, and also found it to randomly started printing out using an odd redish color hue in place of black, if you do not select the black/gray color scale for black and white only prints. Thought it was simply bad HP cartridges so replaced with new, same problems, and again replaced the cartridges, and still the problems persists. Once my supply of cartridges runs out, a new printer will be on the shopping list, and NO it will not be HP. HP support was not helpful in rectifying the problem or interested in making it right. Had an Epson for nearly 10 years until it died, and from the reviews anticipated this to be a great replacement however, it is not. On a side note, the scanner is slow but works as expected.

This is a really nice printer. The printing speed is fast for a inkjet printer and the colors are nice and bright, so it prints really nice photos. I use a lot of printer ink because I print out a lot of knitting and sewing patterns and I had never heard of the HP Instant Ink replacement service. I am really excited about that. Since I print so much, I started with the $4.99 per month plan which allows you to print 100 pages per month. If you print less, then it is only 2.99 for 50 pages per month. The plans go by how many pages you print per month rather than how much ink you use. The printer tells HP when the ink is getting low and they ship you new ink for free. And you can cancel or change your subscription at any time. I also like that this printer can work with only one ink cartridge. I have had many printers that, once one color runs out, you cant print anything at all from it, even if you just want to print in black and white, until you replace that one empty cartridge. That irritates me to no end. With this printer I can print wirelessly from my phone or tablet and Chrome book. Its an all in one, but isnt so huge that it takes up a lot of room. And it was easy peasy to set up and get going. I like this printer very much and I am very happy with is so far. Update 8/12/15 I like this printer so much that I purchased another one for my daughter who was just accepted into the RN nursing program and needed a printer.

I only wish I could put zero stars. Im so irritated at this point. This thing hasnt worked correctly from day one. Its always printed lines through everything when it would actually put any black ink on a piece of paper. Today it wont even recognize the new HP ink cartridges I bought for it as a last resort to see if I could get it to work properly. Nope, Notta, Aint gonna happen!!!!!! I finally had to print a document in blue so I could at least get it signed and taken care of. Im going to see if I can find a place that takes electronics and likes to fiddle with them and resell them because Im done!!!! Oh and before anyone thinks of the obvious questions. Yes.....Ive done the software, firmware and network updates. Ive ran through every possible diagnostic scenario as far as getting the printer head to work right. Ive tried everything....all to no avail! Its probably just a lemon. Oh well..... Next......

I ordered this printer to replace my HP C5280, which I loved, but it quit on me after 9+ years of service. I received this today and immediately set it up for wireless printing. HP made me download 2 apps on my phone. I have had no connectivity issues so far. I will update if I have any. I did need to plug the printer into my desktop pc to print from it, and this printer did not come with a USB cable; it only came with a power cable, but I was able to use the USB cable from my old HP. Setup on the pc was much more involved than setup to my phone. It took about 10 minutes to auto-install the software, only to end with a popup telling me that it had only installed "the most basic options" and if I wanted more, I should install from the provided CD. Putting in the cd gained me 30 more minutes of install, which was very annoying. I was able to decline signing up for "instant ink" and have, as yet, received no pop ups asking me if I want to sign up beyond the first ask. This prints pictures decently enough for my uses. You absolutely must change the settings to get a decent print. Even still, these are in no way "professional quality", but as I said, they work for me. After printing a few different photos, Im having mixed feelings. Printing photos taken on my Samsung S7 gives the best results, but they do print with a border, even though Ive chosen borderless. Printing a scanned photo from my phone, which was downloaded from the internet (the original was taken with a 35mm camera in the 90s and then scanned), is a decent enough print, and also prints with a border. However, printing a professionally taken photo (which is from a professional DSLR and taken by a professional photographer and printed directly from a photo cd) was disappointing. Granted, the photo has an extremely dark background, but the printer almost couldnt distinguish between the background and foreground. Im not a fan of the pre-set printing preferences. None of them work for my needs and the software will only let me save 1 user-made profile. It also wont save any changes I make to the pre-set ones, which is quite honestly not a feature Id have chosen. It feels like a waste of disc space on my hard drive and time consuming for me to change it every single time I want to print. I both like and dislike the scan from printer function. The only things I like are that its convenient and I can scan multiple things at once. I really liked that on my C5280 I could choose my scan settings. I havent found a way to do that on the 5660. My main issues are that I cant choose the quality I want, and I cant scan just the thing on the glass; it scans the entire glass, which leaves a huge white space. I dont want to mess around with cropping every single thing I scan, and will be hunting for a way to fix this. I dont like not knowing what dpi my scan is, either. **Update: I found a way. Do not delete the printer shortcut HP puts on your desktop. This is how you can change your scan settings, change the default scan folder, and see a preview to change the scan area. You can also choose print settings (but again, you can only save one user profile), and you can check your ink levels.** The scans do look true to color of the original, which is a plus. In all, this is a decent enough printer. The photos did not print with lines through them, and the color is pretty true if you change the default setting from Normal to Best. Just beware of printing photos with an extremely dark background.

SOOOOO much user friendly and light years FASTER than my Canon duplex printer. Color items comes out much nicer and more true as well. I bought this one to replace a Canon for my Mom and was so impressed, I bought one for myself and one for my Husband. Has everything I need and nothing I dont. Scanner is a breeze to use. So uncomplicated. Love the wifi. Only thing I have to get used to us where to place the originals if copying or scanning. Instead of putting it in the upper left corner..........it goes in the lower right. Other than that, for the price...this is a really, really great printer...... I even got my IPad Pro and IPad Air 2 to print. Just have to settings and log onto your wifi "Network" login and youre ready to print from your IPad. When youre done, go back to settings.... wifi and log back into your home usual connection.

Great printer for my use. My first HP color printer had one cartridge and cost $300 in 1984 or so, That would be about $700 today. All it did was print color and black was a mix of colors. In its day it was a good serviceable machine, but we advanced. This machine is incredible. It prints from any of my computers or phone and I can send an email to it to print from any computer in the world. This not only prints from the computer, but copies and scans to a file. It also holds 4 x 6 photo paper in a second tray so no swapping out paper to print one or two photos. Im very happy with it. HP also has good support if you do have a problem.

This printer, when it actually establishes a connection with the computer, produces high quality printed pages and passable photos. However, more often than not, the printer does not maintain its wireless connection with our iMac and the sent job just sits in the the print queue. If were lucky, we can turn the printer off and on, or pull the paper tray in and out to get the printer to recognize the job and print. But this only works some of the time. This printer is garbage and it drives my wife and me CRAZY. A workaround that is effective, but completely annoying, is to send the print job from your phone. Have not had any problems printing from my phone. But we shouldnt have to do that.
