The EPSON printer is not the problem, the EPSON customer service and internet sabotage is the problem. I purchased this printer on Jan 11, 2018. It set up with no problem and printed like a gem. However, after printing several pages I was already receiving messages that the black ink cartridge was low. On Feb. 11 I decided to order a set of generic ink cartridges. In mid-February I replaced the black ink cartridge with a generic cartridge. There were no issues with set up and I printed on several different occasions since then with no issue. On April 8 I went to scan an item, and had to go through the set up process, this triggered an Epson software/hardware update. I instantly got an error message saying that the printer didnt recognize the black ink cartridge. I think EPSON is running a scam. My printer obviously operated fine with the generic ink cartridges until I allowed for the EPSON update at which time the cartridge was recognized as generic and my printer was disabled. I went to EPSON tech support page and tried their fixes. I sent in my concern and got this response: "Thank you for contacting Epson regarding your Epson XP-440. I am sorry that you are having difficulties with your printer. In reviewing your incident, it appears that you have opened one/some of our online knowledge base articles to help you in resolving this issue. Please be advised that in order to further isolate the issue, you need to use a genuine Epson ink cartridges. Epson does not recommend refilling or using other brands of ink cartridges. Using these products will not void the products original warranty; however, if these products cause a failure, the repair of that failure will not be covered under warranty. Answer ID: 28358 If you have a different support issue, submit a request via our U.S. Support Site and we will respond in a timely manner. Thank you again for contacting Epson." I dont find this to be very good customer service. I shared this issue with several IT people in my building. They confirmed my suspicion that my printer can be disabled via "internet updates." EPSON can recognize when an ink cartridge is not an EPSON product and can send a "block" to disable the product. This is so wrong, what right does EPSON have to disable my property? This is internet sabotage. I will be spreading the news that EPSON is not a reputable company. This has to be illegal, this action is no less than EPSON sending some goon into my house and smashing my printer into tiny pieces. I have forwarded this concern on to the better business bureau and the Kansas Attorney General. I encourage others with similar experiences to do the same.

Before you buy an Epson Printer please read this warning. Epson now (with their latest update) forces you to buy their expensive ink. They have programed their inkjet printers to only accept genuine Epson ink cartridges. I spent over an hour with Epson tech support and they said the only way I could get my printer to work was to take out the third party ink and put in expensive Epson ink cartridges. I have used third party ink for over two years and now with the latest firmware upgrade I can only use Epson ink. WOW! The ink costs almost as much as the printer and is four times as expensive as the third party ink. No thank you Epson. I will only use my HP printer from now on. The third party ink works fine in HP printers.

Epson should give the printer away to sell more of the replacement ink cartridges. We purchased the Expressions XP-440 for $50 largely because of its small footprint which was compatible with the limited printer space in our built in desk area. Our 5+ year old XP-400 (same size and features as the XP-440) started skipping and blurring print lines and required replacement. The old XP-400 went through the ink cartridges just as quickly as our new XP-440; however, we could purchase 10 re-manufactured compatible Epson ink cartridges for $7 to $11. By comparison (on Amazon), Epson standard XP-440 cartridges (1 black & 3 color) are listed at $34.70 and the same 4 Epson cartridges in the high capacity version are $58.99! Needless to say, we were shocked after 5 weeks when our black ink ran out (and the color cartridges were also all below 50%) and we started our search for replacement Epson XP-440 ink cartridges. We only print 200 to 300 pages a month, but we could end up paying 4 to 5 times what the XP-440 cost for annual ink cartridge replacement even if we purchase the slightly cheaper third party re-manufactured ink cartridges. This printer would work best for someone who doesnt print more than a couple of pages a week. UPDATE - 9 months later. Although still more expensive than our re-manufactured XP 400 ink cartridges, we have been using LD ink cartridges - until recently. We installed an EPSON firmware update in April. Subsequently, some new LD ink cartridges were rejected when they were installed. Our only Epson OEM cartridge did work (used to replace the rejected LD black ink cartridge.) Whats especially bad is we cant print just black and white because the printer is locked up on "does not recognize our LD cyan ink cartridge." We ended up chucking the EPSON 440 out of frustration and bought a HP 3755 printer. It works fine with cheaper ink costs than the EPSON OEM costs. Clearly, the real money is in the ink cartridges and EPSON wants to protect the profitable sale of EPSON OEM ink cartridges

I use a printer very little throughout the year. But when I need it, I really NEED it to be working when I try to either print out spreadsheets or court documents. I go to use it, printer says it needs an update. Fair enough its been a while, sure why not? Printer is dead. Power on. Green light. No screen activity, no noise, nothing. I couldnt even change the ink if I wanted. What type of update breaks a printer?!

As other reviews mention it gets updates which takes away the ability to print in black ink only and also takes away the ability to pick the quality of the print so you end up printing always in the highest quality which uses the most ink. I did what others said which was to reinstall the cd rom that came with it then pick do not get updates which did let it print in just black ink and gave back the option to print the quality of ink. The reason why its in the trash is because it ran out of black ink 5 days ago and it has taken until today to get the ink in the mail. The old ink was in it while it waited for the new ink to arrive. When I put the new black ink in it actually used up all the black ink and my yellow too because it keep needing head cleanings because it would not print those two colors. Be warned it uses ink while it does each head cleaning. You can watch your ink go down with each cleaning. The 16 cleanings never made it print in all the colors even though I removed the black ink and wet ink was on the hole where it had been filled meaning ink was able to come out. Through the years it has required head cleanings so many times which used lots of ink which makes this not a good printer. I also own a HP that I like. The HP also lets you print in black only when your color is gone but this Epson will not let you print in black unless all the colors have ink in them. This has been a bad experience and I will stick with HP printers.

This printer has been an absolute pain in the butt since the day I purchased it two months ago and has been unreliable the entire time. I have a brand new apple laptop, and live in a 470 square foot studio, and without fail lose the printer connection every single day. For a while I called Epson every day to troubleshoot the connection and get it back on Wi-Fi, and now not even that works -- the printer is unable to connect to the network at all. They then told me the Wi-Fi network was the problem (despite the fact that I have no problems with any other wireless devices in my home) and had me jump through hoops with Comcast to remove one of the two signals on my dual-bandwidth router. When that still didnt work (surprise!) Every time I call Epson, I have to first wait on hold, then go through the "gatekeeper" on support who asks me the same set of questions every single time (despite my having an incident number, which seems to make no difference in expediting suport), then that person give me a NEW indicident number and transfers me to a Mac specialist, who then gives me a NEW incident number and transfers me to a high-level support person. Every.Single.Time. This entire process takes about 30 minutes to just get to the person who knows anything relevant to my needs -- so every day when I call, its at least 30 minutes before I even get to anyone helpful. And I still dont have a working printer nor have I been offered a replacement device yet.

Do not buy this printer. DO NOT BUY. Yes, it is cheap. Then you have to buy your first pack of ink cartridges that cost about $60 and up for just one box (1 black and 3 colored). Remember, if one cartridge reads empty, even though it still has ink, your printer will not work. And you cant get generic ink much cheaper as the cartridges are new. Epson is trying to lure you in and then squeeze every dollar from your wallet from there on. If you decide to go with Epson, it is cheaper to buy a printer every time you need ink.........so follow these steps. 1) Buy a second identical printer and take the cartridges from the new printer box. 2) Put the printer back in the box and find storage space for it on a shelf somewhere. 3) Use the ink until prompted to change cartridges. 4) Buy another identical printer. 5) Repeat steps 1 through 4 ad infinitum. 6) Use the excess printers to spell out the words, "Epson is trying to screw all its customers by over charging for ink," in a field somewhere so that Google Earth can photograph it. You should have gathered together enough printers for this endeavor after printing a handful of letters to the CEO of Epson expressing your disgust....yeah you guessed it, the ink runs out pretty soon for a $60 box. Why drugs? Why firearms? They should be smuggling printer cartridges if they have a street value like this.

Never again will I buy an Epson product. In the past, the printers Ive bought from them have produced high quality results, but for an extremely limited period of time before they started to get cranky and then fail altogether. With the current iterations, they just bypass the producing results phase and go straight to cranky. Trying to print on matte paper, I can get maybe three copies out before the printer goes into a "paper jam/paper feed error" loop and refuses to print despite the fact that there is of course no paper jam, and it seems to be able to pull a piece of paper through well enough to dump it dumbly in the tray, but refuses to actually print on it. Absolutely ridiculous. I bought a WorkForce WF-2760 for my father, and after maybe two months, it fares little better. Never, ever again, Epson. I should have learned my lesson by now, but I guess Im a little dense. But even I can (eventually) realize when something is a piece of garbage. On to Canon or HP, hopefully I can find a printer somewhere that will actually work without being as temperamental as a wet Chihuahua.

The Epson Expression Home XP-440 Wireless Color printer from the beginning always give you a message that the "printer has a paper jam" and you follow all instructions to check for paper jam but clearly theres no paper jam.
