The Canon Pixma TS9120 is a premium printer that, once set-up, seems to operate reliably and with just a little care and feeding. However, there are some issues people may want to consider in purchasing this printer, which also forced at least a one star reduction from five. Unpacking was simple, and everything was clearly marked. Quick start instructions were the first things out of the box, and relatively clear to follow. The printer itself is solidly built with typical plastic that should be handled appropriately. Lots of protective tape and plastic covering needs to be removed prior to plugging the printer in, as trays may want to extend, etc. As for initial pre-setup, ink and printer head calibration were pain free. Powered up and following instructions, from directly downloaded software (a disc is also provided), there were issues with the network connection under Windows 10. It would not install automatically, and Windows could not find the printer. Windows settings could not find the printer. After a bit of searching in the printer menu itself I found another way to connect that is not clear in the instructions provided online or in the unending loop of waiting for a printer to be found on the install software. On the printer menu, there is a section to connect directly to a wireless router. Once I entered the local password, everything proceeded properly. The install software found the printer and it was added to the list of printers and scanners in Windows 10 settings. I do not know if this is a Windows or Canon issue, but certainly more instructions need to be provided either in the install software or on the printer settings to guide you to alternative methods of diagnosing a connection problem. Once running on the local network, all seemed easy, and following the instructions online and on the printer itself were great until it came time to actually selecting the rear tray for paper feed. Putting paper into the rear tray and “registering” it as plain paper did not make that same tray the default for printing. There are no settings that provide for that default. Printer properties during printing do not have a front or rear tray selection, only a paper type selection. Windows settings did have a tray selector setting but it was default to “automatic” which provided no selection. For my normal uses, I print using regular paper and onto plain paper mailing labels. My current HP printer has a front feed so I can just put a label in on top of the normal plain paper and it feeds the top sheet for the occasional label. It is not quite that easy for the Pixma TS9120. Apparently, after some searching, if you select plain paper in both the bottom and rear tray, the automatic default is the bottom tray—there is no way to make the printer use the upper tray (for plain paper) when the bottom tray has paper in it. The default tray will be the rear tray ONLY if the bottom tray is empty. You can force the rear tray to be detected by selecting a different paper type when “registering” the paper (or in my case mailing label, for which there is no option, but I selected “envelope”) on insertion and then specifying that same paper type during printing. Strangely, in the help file I read online, there should be a setting on the menu to allow you to make the rear tray the default for plain paper. On the TS9120, there is a place to specify paper type for each tray, but no setting to force the routine use of the upper tray for plain paper. A firmware update did not change this lack of functionality. This is not convenient and may be confusing to most users. If I have just loaded a paper into the rear tray, I want to use it and it should be the automatic default. Alternatively, the printer properties, should allow tray selection during printing and allow the setting of a default in same. After those operational issues were resolved, I installed the Canon print app on my apple ipad air 2. The install was trouble free and seemed easy to use for quick wireless printing from your pad or phone. As to quality of printing, plain paper documents are just fine and speed is acceptable. A couple of photos printed using Kodak premium photo paper showed good color rendition and no issues, although they did take a bit more time than straight documents. A scan and copy of those same color pictures onto plain paper also produced acceptable results. In each of these tasks, the menu system was intuitive and easy to navigate. I cannot speak to ink usage or replacement cost. The multiple cartridge ink system promises (and delivers) clear and color accurate photos. It appears from what I can gather on Amazon that this printer will allow third party ink use, of which there are some inexpensive selections. The biggest advantage wireless printers have is that they can print from variety of sources while allowing you to place the printer anywhere that is convenient. As I found out, guest computers, signed into your wireless network can also use this printer easily. This Canon Pixma TS9120 provides that wireless convenience and capability (after set-up considerations) and produces great print quality. The lack of being able to exactly specify a default tray (with plain paper) is a minor gripe, but one that keeps me from giving a full 5 stars for this printer.

Not nearly as good as the 5200 series. Paper loading difficult. Software not as intuitive to use. Back tray not user friendly. Cant order ink on Amazon for a reasonable price like you can do with the 5200. Update: This is the worst printer I have ever owned. This printer is truly not user friendly. The printer started out using the default tray for paper and then without a change from the user, the printer is now using the rear tray. This is not easy to get to it you have limited space. I just changed out the large black ink cartridge after two weeks of rarely using the printer and now I can not print anything. No notice, no help. Just not printing. My MG5220 was a star. I would have never switched had my new desktop not been able to communicate with the 5220. Do not buy this printer.

UPDATE (09/01/18 - down to 1 star): Im done with this printer. The driver issues explained below are a deal breaker. My wife cant even print from her laptop anymore when she reinstalls the printer driver, so has to log into her email from my computer to print. The bad software on this thing makes it unusable. I am now at one year with this printer and have spent $350 on ink BTW. I am buying next an "Epson Expression ET-3700 EcoTank Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank Printer" where the ink is supposed to last for up to two years, and is only around $60 for a set of replacement ink bottles that should last another two years. If it works properly it will be a *much* cheaper option in the long run. Pros: Prints great images for a non-photo specialty printer, does a fine job scanning, nice compact footprint. Cons: Drinks ink like a sailor on shore leave (but really, dont all ink jets?) + no generic replacement ink available yet and wifi connection is BUGGY AS ALL HECK (-2 stars just for this). I researched the heck out of dektop all-in-one printers available at the time (Oct 2017) when I settled on this one. Didnt see any decently rated Lexmark or Brother brand inkjets, and saw **terrible** reviews of HP printers and their stupid auto-ink system which basically signs you up to pay to print from your own printer by the page. Canon was the only major brand left, and the TS line was new and looked like it had some good innovations, soooo I bought this. Typical complaints about using ink like crazy, but that is what you get with an ink jet. I LOVE the images it prints onto glossy photo paper and it prints as large as 8x10 borderless. Pretty easy to use once you figure out the rear tray. My biggest complaint is the wifi wireless printing. Installed the canon software on all the computers in the house and things were good for a few months. Then the office PC, which happens to be next to where the printer sits but still prints via wifi, developed a weird glitch where it would keep printing the same item over and over again unless I hit the stop button on the printer panel. Ok, Im the one who prints from this PC 99% so I can deal with it. The last few months my wife has been serious problems printing from her MS Surface Pro via wifi, and the last week cant print at all. Always says the printer is offline - which it has been for some reason a couple of times. Ive had to turn off/on the printer to reconnect to the wifi, but even when there is a connection for some reason she still cant print by the next morning. Ive reinstalled the software on her PC (and mine) several times. I think the software is buggy, but Canon seems to be pretty bad about issuing updates to the drives. The Canon website as of today (7/31/18) still shows driver version 1.01 issued in January of this year.

Fantastic photo quality. Downside is that it has 6 ink cartridges and replacing them all costs more than the gross national product of a small third world country. Setup was difficult. Had to hire a Geek squad for setup. I am 67 years old and have had no formal training in computers so I dont fault Canon. When I received the computer the Magenta ink cartridge was almost empty. Hopefully it will last a while if I dont let my family members wear Magenta clothes when I take family photos.

I generally dont take the time to write reviews, unless the product is exceedingly good or bad. This product was appealing, with good tech reviews and nice aesthetics. But look at the price-tag: this was an unfortunate experience in getting what you paid for. Initial set-up, software, driver installation went well -- the initial test page printed with no drama. Thinking my printer replacement project over, I went back to work: my first attempt at printing something productive resulted in an immediate paper jam. CLEARING the jam was illuminating: inside, the components of this device are flimsy and cheaply made -- and exceedingly difficult to manipulate for jam-clearing. After clearing this jam and getting it re-assembled, it never printed from the lower cassette again: each time it reported no paper loaded when the paper had remained loaded from the time of the successful test-print. Instructions for this handling his particular error were non-existent in the manual. I wasted HOURS of time trouble-shooting what I must ultimately conclude is a piece of GARBAGE. Save yourself a lot of time and heartache -- buy something else. Heck, buy ANYTHING else.

Could never get the thing to stay online. Spent HOURS (at least 10) with Canon Tech Support and Windows 10 tech support. Every possible reason was gone over by both companies (Windows actually came onto my desktop remotely) and both companies said all the connections, and settings were correct and working. The printer stayed online for a few hours and then went off again. Removed and reinstalled it from scratch with the CD they provided. Worked until I shut my system down. Next day it was offline again. Tried a wired Lan besides the wireless connection. Still was offline. Such good reviews but it sure was a lemon for me.

Ive had about 5 Canon printers and Ive never had any major problems, but this is a piece of junk. After 2 months of intermittent usage, I go the error code to contact a technician. No other instructions, nothing I can troubleshoot myself. Its extremely slow. Worst printer Ive ever had.

We bought this printer 6 months ago to replace another Canon printer wed had and loved using for years but the print head finally went out and it was cheaper to buy a new printer. We have been buying only Canon AIO printers for 10-20 years now and looked forward to another happy decade or so using our new Canon TS9120 printer. Unfortunately, the TS9120 has not been trouble-free. It prints photos nicely, but it constantly-- and I do mean constantly-- results in paper jams when printing duplex documents. It constantly makes a squeaking noise when preparing to print documents. I cannot recommend this printer. Should I contact the manufacturer for compensation toward another printer?

It is the usual excellent quality Canon printer. I have used and loved Canon printers for almost 20 years at home and also ordered them for my office. BUT as others have said, the cost and availability of ink and the premature notices of of empty cartridges have made me very disappointed in Canon. I should have just ordered a 922 when my old one died after years of service. (Since Ive retired I didnt really need a business printer any more.) I dont mind paying a reasonable amount for a good quality printer. I do mind when 2 refills of ink in a 4 month period cost more than the printer itself. Meanwhile, Im taking my used cartridges in for recycling and hopefully within the next few months there might be some after-market ones available. If not, Ill buy a different, older model, and it may not be a Canon. Update 09/14/18: At long last, the after-market inks are starting to become available. Ive already spent more on replacement Canon ink cartridges than the $130 I paid for the printer to start, so happy to see the competitive arrivals. Have had to purchase two complete sets of Canon cartridges since I bought this printer. . And Im one who has owned Canon printers long enough to know to wait to purchase replacements. Canon used to charge fair prices for their ink cartridges but that time is over.

It prints beautifully & from my iphone, too! Which is great. But it has no Auto-Document Feeder (ADF) for scanning larger multiple-page letters, essays or documents, and I can’t find any compatible cartridges that arw affordable, and some of the ink runs out VERY quickly compared to older Canons & other major-brand inkjets Ive owned in the past. I read that Canon is threatening to sue online vendors who offer compatible cartridges for sale, which is MESSED UP. As an artist, writer, soon-to-be grad student & Mom, I need a decent printer that I can afford to use! Also, I dislike all the accompanying software. Are we in 1995? Do you have to take over my life with overly bulky interfaces meant for really tech-allergic folks who are barely past plugging in their new computer? I wish I’d just saved my money & gotten something that really satisfies my needs. I paid less but I’m gonna end up paying more- either for brand name top-dollar ink cartridges or a new printer, or having to pay FedEx or a commercial copier to scan my manuscripts as needed. Canon, I loved you. I’ve been loyal to your quality scanners and printers (and cameras, etc.) for most of three decades. Why have you forsaken me? You’re not making my life any better or easier. Please stop being greedy and sucking. Don’t stoop so low- you’re better than this. I want to believe in you- can you give me a reason?
