I really wanted to like this printer. We had a Pixma inkjet and had a great experience with that, so we were happy to go with Canon for the upgrade when I needed it. Sadly, thats turned out to be a mistake. The hardware seems fine. The consumables are expensive, but you know that going in. The software is the killer. Everything just worked on the Pixma. NOTHING just works on the ImageCLASS. I cant plug in a USB cable and just print away when my glitchy Comcast connection goes down. I cant scan over the wireless network. And now its demanding that I replace toner cartridges when they are 40% full, which just seems like a scheme to drive up Canons cash flow. Its hard to believe these two products are made by the same company. Several hundred bucks are down the drain at this point, and I guess Im stuck. But I certainly wouldnt buy this again if I had the chance to do it over.

Update: Not so good after 1 year hence degrade to 1 star. Screen ceased to allow return to home function shortly after initial operation. Canon tech said they had no idea but if we wanted to box up this bhemoth and send it back for repair they would look at it. No thanks, too heavy and dangerous to move down stairs. Then we made a terrible error in judgement when we bought toner cartridges direct from canon who sends them under unreasonable shipping restrictions of direct sig and no hold at location. When we contacted Canon, the unhelpful rep said it was perfectly reasonable that we should have to stay home all day and wait for toner cartridges. Never have we encountered such unpleasant and genuinely rude c/s reps. Further, questionable querky softwate does not allow easy scanning to computer. Admin ids have to be setup. We do not recommend this product!! Previous: Bought to replace a 2013 HP multi function. Other reviewers were right to mention the weight of the printer. WE unboxed the item and then carried it up a short flight of steps with no problem. There are plenty of places to grab for secure lifting. Excellent out of the box printing....cartridges already installed, some packing material and orange tape to remove. Took us about 10 minutes to set up and print in MAC environment. Used LAN wired connection with Airport rather than Wi Fi. Able to print direct from iPad instantly as well as iMacs. There was an extra plastic piece the same color of the printer that we have not determined its purpose. Perfect for our home office; however, the printer has greater capability and capacity that we will probably not fully exercise. One word: OUTSTANDING ! UPDATE after 1 week: Everything works well EXCEPT the HOME and CANCEL buttons on the LED console do not work, diagnosed by customer service as a mechanical rather than software issue and advised returning the product to Amazon.com. We like all the features and ease of setup so well we havent decided whether we will or not.

This Canon MF731Cdw color laser printer looks great, is incredibly simple to set up, and best of all, the image quality is great for color printing. I was able to plug it in, connect to my wi-fi and print from my iPhone in less than 5 minutes without reading a manual. The color touch screen guides you through the process and its simple. I then went to Windows 10 and added a printer and it found it and added it in a few seconds. This is without even installing any software for this printer. The scanner works very well for making color copies, and the ability to print photos taken on my phone directly to the printer in seconds is amazing. The printer is very fast, and prints almost immediately after asking it to print. This printer does double sided printing which is a great feature to save paper and create professional looking 2 sided documents. The quality of the color printing for photos is outstanding, even on plain printer paper, and there is nothing on this printer that would want me to give it any less than 5 stars. However, one of the most important factors when buying a printer is the cost of toner. On a color laser printer, it can add up quick with 4 toner cartridges. For this model, a set of 4 standard toner units which yield between 2200-2,300 color and 6,300 black is currently 413 dollars on Amazon Canon Original 046 Toner Cartridges - Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow . This is fine if you dont print much and use this printer for the occasional print or photocopy. But for an office environment where you might be printing hundreds of pages per day, The toner will be used up quickly. Canon even sells a paper tray for this printer than can hold 850 pages. If you print enough to need the big paper tray, the cost of toner will add up fast. Its true that if you print mostly black with the occasional color print, the main toner cost goes way down to just 137 dollars for the 6,300 yield toner. So that is more reasonable. But to pay almost a hundred dollars more than the cost of the entire printer (at the time of this review) for the 4 colors that you may need to replace several times a year or more; thats something you should consider before purchasing this printer. I have a lot of experience with Brother color laser printers and they work well for a while and then lose their quality over time. I havent had the same experience with Canon, so maybe the higher toner cost is justified. If you need color in your printouts, and are ok with using toner saving settings, the benefits might outweigh the toner cost. So far I am loving how fast it is and how the printed images look, especially photos. I just cant rate it 5 stars with the cost of the toner. I wanted to give this item 3 stars, but I didnt feel that was fair considering I am reviewing this unit and not the cost of supplies to keep it running. I wouldnt rate a nice sports car or truck lower because of poor gas mileage, but I would mention it, as its important to some people. All color laser printers have this issue, so maybe I am overstating the cost. To wrap this up, I didnt even mention other features like the multipurpose tray for printing checks, envelopes, or single pages. It works great. The scanner has a paper feeder to scan loose pages, and of course you can copy like a regular copy machine. The duplex printing works great and the printer in general is built really well and seems like it will hold up for many years. If the print quality stays consistent over time, this will be the best laser printer Ive used. I am using this in a home office and dont need to print too much volume, so it should work out well for me. After thinking about it, toner is just part of the cost of getting a color laser printer so I am giving this 4 stars overall. Its a great printer that will cost a lot or a little to keep using, depending how much you use it.

Huge! A 2 person lift to your desktop, or one young very strong person. The weight is reasonable for a laser color printer and scanner, but the printer is physically quite large. For me, this size is not an obstacle, since I have a large available space right next to my desk. If you have the space, this is a very good printer. Colors are bright and true. Installation was very easy. Key was getting the printer out of the box. Fortunately Canon has a very clever box design, which enables box removal without lifting the printer. YES! The printer easily recognized my network and Windows 10 had the printer drivers needed, so installation was completed in a few minutes. This Canon printer comes with an offer of extra software to download. Its useless. Ignore the offer. The little touch screen works well to control the printer/scanner. I have not explored all the possible functions of this advanced printer/scanner, but all of the standard functions work very well, and are effortlessly accessible. However, be warned. Replacement cartridges are expensive. I used a non-HP cartridge supplier for my old B&W printer that was very reliable and much lower cost than HP. I will explore this option and update this review.

Like some other reviewers, I really wanted to like this printer, and it prints well when it prints. First, the wireless reception is really poor. Other wireless devices in the same spot have no trouble connecting to the nearby access point, but the Canon always says the signal strength is "bad" or "very bad". As a result, its always disconnecting from the network. How hard is it to put in a decent 802.11 radio? Now Im having trouble getting anything to print, and I cant find options in the Canon print drivers or the printer to help me trace whether the problem is the port connection on my computer, the printer, or the WAP. The touchscreen on the Canon is really poor. It doesnt respond well, and the scroll bar is almost comically hard to use because its tiny and seems to overlap with the sense region for the menu options. It reminds me of really sparse user interfaces back in the 1980s when a few extra bytes of memory or pixels was a big deal... how hard is it in 2018 to make a decent small screen interface, with menus that actually let you diagnose a problem?

I have had enough! I had a decent Brother wireless B/W printer. It worked very well for the house. When I needed color I would dust off the old canon ink jet scanner. I would get new cartridges for lots of money, run my feeble prints then store it for the next time. Wash, rinse, repeat. Almost cheaper to drive the 20 minutes to the copy store each time. I finally sprung for this bad boy. First of all, when they said it was big and heavy in the reviews they were not kidding. It is slightly smaller than a commercial unit. Right out of the box it kicks butt! Took me a bit to connect to my wifi but only because I dont do it often. I configured my computer, my wifes computer, and downloaded the ap for my phone. Great prints, copies, and scans. I havent used it a whole bunch but I am sure it would be up to whatever. This is not a fax. 100% pleased!

I was very excited to get this set up as I had a lot of documents to print. 5 pages into the first print it jammed, a screen came up with instructions on how to fix the jam. Step 1 - open the back panel step 2 - remove jam step 3 - lift back tray - step 4 - close back panel - except instead of working, it just took me back to step 2. It has been 3 days of removing jams that dont exist and opening and closing panels - 72 hours in which I have not been able to stop opening and closing panels - I fear I am in purgatory and this is my punishment - an eternity of trying to fix paper jams that do not exist. I begin to wonder what I have done wrong in life to deserve such a fate, who have I wronged so badly, who have I mistreated to deserve this? I swear, if I get another chance in life I will live a better life so as to not spend all of eternity fixing my Canon MF731CDW. Please lord, give me a second chance!

I dont think you can get a better machine in this price range. It has come down since I bought mine. I had a little trouble installing the scanner driver, but that was because I had no CD drive in my comp/tablet. Downloaded drivers and got it going. I use this in my home office and I couldnt be happier. The printing is high quality, the doc feeder works well, and the scanned images are clear. I also like the way the screen is laid out and that it wakes up pretty quickly. Overall I would buy this again without hesitation. I only took a star away because I did have to fight with the scanner drivers a little to get things going.

I finally broke down and bought a fancy printer and no regrets. I love this thing. Its reliable, fast, clean and clear. Im not used to dropping a $100 on toner, but they last so long, they end up being a much better deal than getting nickel and dimed with tiny inkjet cartridges that dry out when not in use. The unit is huge, so make sure you have room for it. The only problem I have is that sometimes the wifi gets confused - but in these cases you just turn it off and on again and it sorts itself out. Its annoying when you are in a hurry, but 90% of the time it is very responsive. Money well spent.

Printer stopped working 2 months later from purchase date. This ¨warranty¨ dont give you any solution but send YOU to ¨canon authorized centers¨which doesnt exist or dont accept printers (unbelievable but true) I am literally spending miles and time to get some help and nobody help me, or send a technician or return your money. I have never seen something like this and I have been using canon products most of my life. Do not buy this printer or another from Canon, there is no service beyond you pay. Even when they say that comes with 3-year warranty, which means nothing because YOU have to go to transport the product even when its their fault, and its a heavy product for being transported!. Better look for Brother!
