This is a preliminary review of the Canon Color imageCLASS MF644Cdw. The printer came extremely well packed in one of the most creative boxing jobs I have ever seen. Basically, the outer box lifts up off of the inner box without you having to turn the reasonably heavy and bulky shipping box upside down! Once you lift the outbox, there is an inner box that you cut two taped sections, and the inner box falls away from the printer. You have to remove a fair amount of orange protective tape and foam inserts (as is typical with any printer). Basic set up was pretty straight forward- plug in the power cord and connect via CAT5 or USB or via Wi-Fi. I did the CAT5 and my computer immediately located the new printer and was able to print. The black and white was crisp and the colors clean on regular laser multi-purpose paper. The printer does not come with a manual, and unfortunately it is hard to locate the proper manual from Canon. As a matter of fact, when you put in the MF644Cdw to search for a manual, the first unit that comes up on the Canon site is their MF733Cdw. Fortunately, the help screen on the printer guides you through most necessary set up and use steps. However, if you want to use it as a scanner, you need to go to the Canon site and download both a new driver and their scanner application. Again, be careful to select the MF644 and not the MF733, because it is a different driver. Once you download the new driver and scanner application, that works very well from either your computer or the lcd screen on the printer. The printer comes with an additional plastic piece that turns out to be the legal paper size dust cover. You wont find any explanation of this piece with the printer, nor in an on-line manual (if you can find the correct one). I found the answer on a Canon users blog. It is for use when you extend the paper cassette tray to load legal size paper. You then can insert the dust cover into the tray and re-close the tray. The unit is 16.9" x 16.5" x 16.5" (429 mm x 419 mm x 419 mm) and weighs 48.4 lb. (22.0 kg). It comes with starter toner already installed. Replacement OEM toner $70 to $95 for the black and colors each. There are a number of non OEM toners advertised at about 1/4 the price. I will do an update after several months of use.

The Good: -Great print quality -Large easy to use touchscreen -Not inkjet, uses laser toner so not as much waste -Prints quickly and quietly -Very easy set up, literally just plugged in and hooked up to my network and we were printing -Prints double sided -Scanner works well The Bad: -Large footprint -Laser color toner cartridges are a bit expensive The Bottom Line: We’re using this in our home office and this printer works great. It was very easy set up as I literally took it out of the box and took the tape off. Then I plugged it in and hooked it up to my WiFi and I was up and printing. The print quality is very good in both black/white and color. The best part about this printer is that it takes color toner rather than inkjet. I will never own an inkjet printer again, you waste so much ink. The printer prints double sided and prints quickly and quietly. The scanner and copier work great which is good for our needs. The only downsides to this printer are it’s size and also that the toner cartridges are not cheap (at least they last for awhile ~1,200 pages). Overall I would recommend this printer for your office needs. *If you found my review helpful, please let Amazon know by clicking the helpful button below! **Disclosure: I received a sample product from the Amazon Vine program for an honest and unbiased review.

Excellent overall in every tested function. I havent yet used the fax though it appears straightforward. This replaced a Xerox Work Center 6027 laser printer. It is about the same size and far better. The Xerox never stayed wirelessly connected, had paper jams, and would only do single side printing/scanning. There is no comparison of these similarly sized and priced printers. The Canon wins hands down. Im using this printer on a wireless home network with WPA encryption. Im using Windows 10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad Workstation. Longterm reliability is yet to be determined. Setup: 1. Before starting setup decide connection method to your computer or network because the setup process requires you to make a selection. Connection can be wireless/wired ethernet/USB cable. I selected wireless setup on my home network. 2. I unboxed the printer which was securely packaged, removed a lot of packing material and tape as found on most printers for transport. The laser print cartridges are preinstalled. Load paper in the 150 sheet bottom feed tray. 3. Turn on the printer and set it up initially from its five inch LCD screen before connecting to the computer or installing software. Following the User Guide setup instructions was quick and seamless. 4. The LCD screen walked me through setup in an easy to understand manner. Set local info such as time, date, and language. Next, it asked me how I would connect. I selected wirelessly and it walked me through setting the SSID (name) and password of my network. It connected quickly then went through a series of internal tests including printing and scanning a color test sheet. In all it took about 15 minutes. 5. Once the printer was operating and connected to my wireless network, but not yet connected to my computer, I loaded the software drivers and other software from the Canon website onto my computer. I did this versus using the included CD disk to ensure I received the latest drivers and software. Installation of drivers and software was seamless. During driver/software installation the computer automatically detected the network connected printer and ran a test page. This took another 15 minutes. Software: 1. Drivers and software are provided for printing, scanning, faxing and copying. All software loaded fine in Windows 10. This is a business printer; you dont get much extra software as you do with home style printers. Im okay with that since I use outside document preparation and PDF software, i.e., PaperPort, Adobe Acrobat, and Power PDF. Faxing and Scanning software allow extensive setup and use options though I didnt test the fax function. 2. The printer is WIA and TWAIN compliant so my non-Canon software works fine with it. Use and Performance: 1. Duplex (2-sided) printing and scanning work perfectly. Page scanning and printing is fast as expected from a laser printer. 2. Print and scan quality is indistinguishable from originals including color documents. This is not a photo print quality printer. However, color documents are excellent. 3. The machine is fairly quiet. It goes into power saving sleep mode after about two minutes of non-use. Touching the screen or a lit half-moon button wakes it up. It automatically and quickly wakes when it receives a print/scan/fax/copy signal from the wireless network. 4. Duplex scans are fast. This is a useful feature since I copy many two-sided documents. I save scans in a variety of formats from JPG to PDF to Word documents. Using this machine and software is straightforward. 5. Printer/scanner/fax/copy functions can be controlled from the LCD screen on the printer or computer. Screen layout and resolution are good. Screen is touch sensitive but doesnt always respond to a light touch and sometimes requires a firm touch. SUMMARY: In a few days of operation this machine has operated flawlessly. I am satisfied with setup, operation, and overall functionality. Double sided printing and double sided scanning are easy to control and fast. I highly recommend this printer for home office or small business purchasers.

Included drivers disc was entirely windows based. Instruction/installation manual was entirely windows based. There were no drivers on their website for IMac. Luckily I had a windows box to use and was able to set up the wireless connection. After it was set up I was able to print from IMac, IPad, and IPhone. Good image quality. Happy with product.

While the color copy (bottom) printed out on regular – not photo-quality – paper, is not as sharp and vivid as the original, its light years ahead of my previous printer that cost more several years ago. And I think its a beautiful copy!! The set-up on this printer was simple, and the printer was packed very well. When my previous printer stopped working, at first I purchased a printer from another manufacturer that cost about $100 less than this Canon. It was awful, noisy, slow, and every few minutes it spewed out a page with the same line printed on it over and over – a line that had nothing to do with me or anything Id tried to print out. I returned it. For the extra $100, this ImageClass is well worth the money. It prints beautifully and quickly. The scans are also light years ahead of my previous printer. Text printing is fantastic. I did try printing out a color photo, and you might need photo paper for that, as it came out a little dark and not sharp. Not super dark, but not great -- but again, photo paper would help a lot, Im sure. The printer is heavy, and I needed someone to lift it for me, but thats a one-time thing. If I have any problems, Ill update this review, but at the moment Im extremely pleased.

The printer is very fast from start of print command to print and quiet while doing it. Its heavier and larger than most printers at about 50 lbs and so difficult to position. The setup we chose to attach the printer to our network was by cable to our router. Our computer is also connected by network cable to the router which caused a problem during setup because the driver load step failed when it couldnt find the printer on the network. We figured out the computer needs to be connected to our network wirelessly in addition to being attached via cable. After that it was working. The scan function is not loaded onto the desktop during setup for some reason and we had to call customer support to help us find the Icon for it. Once located we found the scan functionality to be rudimentary with only a 3" by 3"" dialogue box and not many options, particularly weak on where to save your scanned file. The Manual you get is really basic. Due to setup problems, only 4 stars.

As a home user, it might sound like using a laser printer is overkill, but this is my second one and I love it. In the past I had a long series of inkjet printers. I was so frustrated buying expensive ink cartridges and having the ink dry out long before I had printed the amount of documents I should have been able to get. I dont print huge amounts of stuff, and ink is...ink. Doesnt last indefinitely. Yes, toner cartridges are expensive. Laser printers are expensive. But toner does not dry out. Not ever. My last set of toner cartridges lasted me almost two years. So, how about THIS laser printer? I set it up on my printer stand, downloaded the driver software, and installed it effortlessly. It connected to my router with the push of a button. The quality of the print is outstanding and the speed is great. Mind you, if you consider it, be aware that this printer is BIG and its heavy (around 40 pounds, I would guess). Dont even think about putting it on your desk. However, the packing box is the best designed I have ever seen! The printer arrived secure in a box that basically disassembled, leaving the printer itself easily accessible for lifting. Of course this is an all-in-one, so it copies and scans. The scanner is great, it does two sided documents in a single pass. Really this has all of the document handling functionality anyone could need. Theres also a fax functionality but I did not try that since it requires a land-line which I no longer have in my home. I will never go back to inkjet.

Really good model except for one feature. The scanner skews paper in the document feeder unless scanning surface has an absolutely perfect starting straight edge.
Appears to be a return item that was resent ?

I have a Brother printer (MFC-J5945DW) that I looove but its too big for my desk area so I ordered this one, knowing the dimensions would work and hoping for the best. This printer is heavy and needs two people to carry and it requires a three-prong outlet. The paper prints out in the middle of the printer (photo1) and theres more space than others provide. The touch screen is easy to navigate and performed well. This printer has a lot of bells and whistles included and Im thinking its target audience is small businesses with all the options it provides (you can run checks, envelopes, etc.). The "Do Not Use" visuals on the feeder tray on top (photo2) made for a fun guessing game (no staples and no paperclips were the only ones we recognized correctly if youre playing along) and made us break out the instructions again. There are three toner cartridges (last photo) that look complicated to remove as laser printers are new to me (storing the instruction booklet underneath printer for convenience). I did not like that you need to keep this printer powered on - it warns against shutting power off but there is a "sleep" mode. I did love the wireless connection to PCs and how easy it was to set up but they include a CD (for Windows users only) and wired connection if needed. I also loved the wi-fi printing options. Overall, its a solid printer that provides colorful images (with accurate hues), fast printing speeds and wireless options that are decent.
