I use this dual paper printer for notarized documents that are 2/3 letter and 1/3 legal sized paper in mixed order. It works incredibly fast and prints well. My documents must be legible and free of marks on either the body or side of paper. This printer is a replacement for a Brother 5150 dual tray printer that gave me well over 500,000 pages. I print 2,500-7,500 pages per month and need a reliable printer. This printer was easy to set-up using my secure wifi network, and I use it on multiple PC and Apple computers as well as iPhones for printing. The dual tray comes with a 500 and 250 page trays. This is perfect for me given the ratio that I print, and the LED screen allows you to very easily assign paper size to the tray. I had it working in about 30 minutes. Brother toner replacements are excellent but expensive at around $100. I use aftermarkets that typically range around $20. HOWEVER, with after markets you have to accept that some of them will either fail or deliver bad quality. So always have a spare if you NEED to print. Brother cartridges have never failed me, but just not worth the money given the volume that I print. On my 5150, the drums would give me 50,000-70,000 prints, but I dont know about this model yet. I will update if there is any problem.

This printer is working perfectly for my job as a notary signing agent. I frequently print 250 pages at a time, combination of letter and legal, no problem. It prints very quickly and the print is clear. It was easy to set up the two different paper trays in the app so the printer pulls legal or letter size as needed automatically. I did read another review where someone mentioned the printer takes a long time to wake after being in sleep mode, but I havent found that to be the case with mine; it only takes a few seconds. I also saw a reviewer who said this printer doesnt actually print on legal paper. It DOES print on legal paper. You just have to extend the paper tray manually. When you do this, the tray does extend out the back of the printer a few inches, but thats okay with me because Id rather have it extend a few inches rather than have the whole printer be that much bigger and heavier (see photo). This is a pretty large printer for a home office. Ive shown a picture of it with my Canon Pixma 6200 inkjet below it so you can get an idea of the size. Setup was not bad. I initially had a little trouble getting it to connect to my home wifi, but once that was solved, everyone in the house has easily been able to print to it. It also comes with a cable so you can connect directly to your computer if you want. This is a great feature ... I bought a ScanSnap ix500 at the same time I bought this printer, and although the ScanSnap can also connect directly to the computer, it didnt come with a cable. Had to buy my own. I like having the option of printing directly in case the wifi is out. It also has an option to print from mobile devices, but I havent tried that yet.

Its amazing, in 2016, there arent too many wireless LASER printers. Of the models available, the number one complaint is wireless connection issues. Great, the one thing you want it to do, it doesnt do well. Brother wireless laser printers are no different. This is one of their newer models, and it seems to be OK after 2 weeks of heavy use. Brother laser printers are generally rock-solid workhorses. This one seems no different. You can connect it via USB 2 (not 3 in 2016?) if you have wireless issues. The set-up is kinda straight forward, but I recommend ignoring the CD, and go to the Brother website and get the latest S/W, and Firmware Upgrade tool. Its all pretty easy, except the wireless set-up is a bit clunky. When it asks you for your wireless routers "Network Key" , and shows you where to find it on your router, its all nonsense. Just use your password and all is well. Yo Brother, maybe consider changing the set-up language so I could be finished in 3 min, rather that 15, because I had to Google what the heck my my Apple AirPort Extreme network key means with regard to Brother wireless printer set-up! One bloke said just use your password... BINGO!

The good: very easy set-up, fast printing, instruction materials written in proper English. The bad: a bit noisy and the manual sheet feeder is made out of plastic thinner than I thought possible. The printer comes sturdily packed, and the inner wrapping has handles to make removal of the printer easy. Very well thought out. Out of the box, I just plugged the printer into my home network (I dont believe in WiFi), turned it on, and my computer found it, and it all just worked. Printing is fast, though a bit noisy. It has that mechanical sound of parts not made with very high precision. Overall this printer is doing exactly what I need it to do, namely print documents cleanly and reliably. I would buy this again.

Other than the rather dull appearance, this successor to our prior Brother duplex laser, which lasted us some 10 years, is fantastic! It is fast, even when printing duplex, has yet to jam, goes into a "deep sleep" when idle (but exits it immediately upon receiving a print job), and was easy to setup on our (secure) wifi network. We use the roughly 50-page flip-down paper input tray a lot for special forms or different stock; the bottom supply drawer holds a plentiful supply of our regular stock. It has the same drum/toner cartridge mechanism as our older device, so we know from experience that changing either or both, including with compatible brand (non-OEM) replacements is fast and easy. After a couple of months of everyday use, were totally pleased!

As a Notary Signing Agent I needed a good quality laser printer that would allow me to print both letter and legal size pages at the same time. After some deliberation I decided on this Brother dual tray laser printer. I liked the fact that I would be able to printer wirelessly from my Surface Pro 4. I also am able to print wirelessly from my phone with ease. This printer was easy to set up and start using. I was able to start printing documents within 20 minutes of taking it out of the box. I do suggest when installing the software for the first time on a computer, use a printer cable (it takes way less time than trying to do it wirelessly). Once you have all of the software and drivers installed you will be able to start printing wirelessly. This printer is so quick that almost as soon as I hit the print button the pages start spitting out. I havent timed it yet, but if Im sitting in my kitchen and print 5 pages, by the time I get to the printer they are already done and waiting for me (it takes about 20 seconds to make the trek) Now on for the downside. Im not sure why this happens, but I noticed that if I go a few days without printing anything, it will not print wirelessly when I do go to print something. (Ive had the same problem with my HP inkjet printer as well). But I find that if I print at least 1 document using printer cable I can go back to printing wirelessly with the next print job. The other minus (but not really) is that it is a little bigger than I thought it would be.

I had a problem with the printer not being able to print different paper sizes within a PDF file. I cannot stress how many times I called for help to Brother Support. It was on-going for a month and I finally gave up and returned it to Amazon. Just be AWARE if you need help from Brother Support it will be on-going with the first level representatives repeating the same script. When I finally received multiple messages from the LEVEL 5 representatives to call them back-the level one support would tell me: They are closed (not true), you have to go through me first. I finally gave up! The pure frustration of continually hitting a wall and the hours I have spent trying to fix a new printer makes me never buy a product from this company again.

Pros: GigE, Apple AirPrint via Bonjour, painless wireless configuration in both macOS and Linux, greatly improved font emulation options leading to high quality serif fonts by Adobe, Linotype, etc without any visible pixelation. Cons: None Tips: The print systems for Linux with CUPS 2.2-2.3 and macOS Mojave’s 10.4.4 making adding to an AirPort Extreme Bass Station painless. Go into the command panel and under Networking make sure in WiFi that AirPrint is enabled. Launch Airport Utility and select your base station under macOS choose Add WPS Printer. Press the WiFi button on the printer panel which initiates an address request. After a few requests the panel inside macOS will inform you the HL L5200DW is asking to connect. Add it Print System panel opens with a Bonjour option to select the printer so do so. It autoconfigs and make the unit AirPrint available inside your network. On Debian Linux with GNOME 3.30 select the printer option and it will be listed already configured

July 2017 UPDATE- The printer has operated flawlessly! I love using AIRPRINT meaning I can printer from my IPAD which is connected to the internet. PROBLEM ISSUE discovered 3/21/17: I use the following with my IMAC running 10.10. MS office for MAC 2011. Adobe Reader DC 2015. Brother has a driver bug that will not allow you to print in duplex (2-sided pages) if you select the printer Icon in the "bar". You must choose FILE then PRINT or you can use COMMAND + P. Duplex does work OK when printing something in OUTLOOK. In Adobe Reader, you cant use their PRINT icon either and get duplex. You can work around that by selecting the PRINT icon then PRINTER to open the dialogue then YES then PRINT. Brother is aware of the bug but claims it in immaterail and wont likely fix it. This is a review on the set up process and other printer qualities as I just activated it today. I was impressed by the clarity of the instructions to set up and use this printer. Brother even set up additional manuals available on-line for things like using AirPrint with OS X and using Google Cloud. The one issue I has was that I was unable to install the January 2017 firmware update. TIP: READ the instructions....now READ again....did I mention R E A D? This will save you work!!!! I set this up in an IMAC (about 6 years old) and I choose to set the printer up wirelessly. Ditch the CD that comes with the unit. You dont need it. Just follow the instructions in the Quick Set up guide titled "Macintosh/Windows computer without a CD-ROM drive". As others have pointed out when asked for you NETWORK KEY just type in your password for your router. Your SSID is the name that you already gave your network. It could be a name like "Tims net connection" or whatever you named it. If you have an iPhone or IPad and go to your wi-fi settings. The SSID will be the name of whatever you connect to to get internet access. I also use Parallels on my IMAC and was happy to see that the wireless printer also showed up as an option too. BTW, I have a Securifi Almond wireless router range extender to provide stronger internet signals in my home. The wireless wizard Brother provided wanted to set me up on a less than optimal SSID so I just set the wireless up manually from there using the LCD screen on the printer to select my Securifi Almonds SSID which gave me the strongest signal . It was totally easy. I also read the AIRPRINT guide so I could print wirelessly from my other Apple mobile devices. It worked like a charm. I try to update this post as I work more with the printer and also get the new firmware installed. TIP: My printer is a duplex model (prints 2 sides) but I was having trouble setting that up via the PAPER TRAY setting.. There are several ways to access the settings. You can do it from the printer LCD or you can TCP/IP in using the printers address and set everything up from your desktop. To set the default to 2 sided you have to first select "long edge " which has to do with the way the pages are set for possible binding. TIP: After setting up the printer, go to the LCD on the printer and press MACHINE INFO then PRINT SETTINGS then OK to print all the settings. Note on page 4 youll see IP ADDRESS with a 6 digit number like 10.0.5.20 with "via DHCP" after it. This your printers IP Address and just like a home address, tells the internet how to access it. Now open your browser and type HTTP:// and the 6 digit IP address and you will be able to make setting changes right from your desktop.

Ive only had this product for 3 months and for the last month or so it has not been bonding the toner to the paper. From what I can tell from online research there is a malfunction in a heating mechanism that causes this issue. The fact that I starting having issues after only being 2 month old makes me pretty upset. On top of that I cant even print the way I wanted to which is why I bought this printer to begin with. Apparently there is a glitch between Mac computers, brother printers, and Adobe software ( apparently only this 3 combination)... the "choose print source by PDF page size" option does not work and theres no fix, so Im still having to go through and highlight all my letter size documents and print them, and then go through and highlight all my legal size documents and print them rather than having a dual tray to do what it was supposed to do which is make my life easier. Do not recommend this product even though Ive previously owned several other brother printers and never had an issue. Very very irritating.
