For this MFCL2710 and other newer models of Brother MFC models (as well as DCP models) the printer must use a toner cartridge (TN730 or TN760) that has a proprietary chip on the toner cartridge. This makes it impossible to buy third party toner except toner that requires that you pop the chip off of a Brother-manufactured toner cartridge (TN730 or TN760) and stick it to the third party cartridge. Even then, the price of those third party cartridges is twice the typical price for third party cartridges that do not require the chip. Make SURE that you research the market for toner cartridges before you buy a Brother printer. Google third party toner for MFCL2710 vs cartridges for MFCL2700 and compare prices and requirement for proprietary chip on cartridges for MFCL2710. The older MFCL2700 can use third party TN660 toner cartridges that cost far less than the Brother-manufactured toner cartridge, and often half the cost of a third party TN760-equivalent toner cartridge. The TN660 cartridge does not have the chip, and the MFCL2700 does not require a cartridge with the chip attached to it.

When it works, its great. Ive had this printer for about 2 weeks, and during that time, I have had this computer print as expected only once. This was intended for occasional household use. I work from home and expected to use the scanning/copying function more frequently than the print function, but also needed a reliable printer as occasionally I print items while on the phone and cant be futzing around with error messages, etc. Initially, I opted for the wireless connectivity. I soon noticed that every time I sent a print job, it was mysteriously not connected. Ill just say that Ive seen "Check Connection" when I close my eyes and try to sleep. (And dont get me started on that pathetic LCD screen.) After growing tired of rebooting and resetting the Wi-Fi connection each.and.every.time I sent a print job (and fielding the wasteful printed status reports during this process), I finally reluctantly decided to go for a hardwired connection and moved the printer directly next to the cable modem (owing more to a short ethernet cable). Unbelievably, the "Check Connection" error was still a constant irritation. Deep sleep was another ridiculous struggle. Supposedly this thing should be aroused from its deep sleep when a print job is initiated or when a button is pressed on the unit. Apparently mine was a bit fonder of its deep sleep than other units because print jobs would queue, buttons would do little more than beep back at me... I tried a scan function once to wake it up, and while that worked, my old friend, the "Check Connection" error popped up after "Deep Sleep" went away. There were a few choice words I had with this machine after that. At the end of the 2 weeks I had this, it printed more of the status sheets from my multiple attempts to reconnect than it did actual print jobs I sent from my computer. Ironically, when I opted to process my return and was trying to print the label, it printed without issue. Go figure. I will say that the duplex feature was a plus, though something I personally did not have a chance to use on this machine. Scanning was a breeze using the Brother program, even on my phone, and helped me to quickly scan multiple documents. When I was shopping around for a printer, the replacement toner cost for the Brother machines was competitive as well. In the end, however, this just didnt cut the mustard for me.

Spend you money elsewhere. This printer worked great for a few months until it didnt. I have had two serous issues with it in about 8 months of very light use. Power Spikes About five months in it started tripping the breaker in my den when it would power spike just before a job. I live in a brand new high-rise with new electrical that is up to code. After digging around on forums I found that I had two options--I would either have to have changes made to the breaker box by the apartment building, or I could buy an extension cord and plug it in the hallway where the circuit can handle a high load. I opted for the extension cord, which is less than ideal but simple enough and not too terribly inconvenient for me. As this problem didnt start immediately, I suspect it has something to do with cheap electrical components that are no longer functioning as they should be. Also, be aware that, according another reviews call with Brother customer service, even when functioning properly this unit will produce a significant spike that may leave you in the dark. Deep Sleep / Lost Wifi Connection With an extension cord snaking in to the hall each time I needed to use the printer, all was relatively well for a few more months. That is until one random day when the printer turned Rip Van Winkle and fell into deep and inexplicable slumber from which it stubbornly refuses to wake. I spent half a day reading forums and reviews looking for a solution (including some promising ones on here) but was ultimately unable to get the WiFi working reliably. After confirming its well past the excepted return window, I just ordered a 10 printer cable and came here to warn others who might be enticed by the units low cost and (seemingly) largely positive reviews. Summary My Wifi printer will now have an extension cord snaking into another room and require plugging in a printer cable to print. This is not what I had in mind when I put this in the cart. And the Deep Sleep issue is a very well documented online, and youll find hits for it across the internet EXCEPT in Brothers available online support. Go figure. That Brother is intentionally ignoring a well documented issue plaguing a number of its customers should be reason enough to pass on this model, and to seriously question the brand.
