I spent years avoiding inkjet printers because I dont like to buy ink. However, I was going to Staples more often than previous years for color prints and it was time to change. 1) needed 11x17 - this can handle it for printing right from one of the two trays and can scan 11x17 as well 2) this has duplex scanning - both sides of the page in one pass, and very fast - I use this feature, you may not 3) did I mention the scanner is fast? and I love using the app on my phone, scanning right to the phone as a PDF or JPEG and then emailing from my phone from the same app 4) Im not printing photos, but business color is awesome. If you need higher grade photo printing, then you probably have a photo printer right? 5) Its big - not a problem for me, but look at the specs for dimensions and go see one in person if you need to. 6) I am impressed by the cost per page, cheaper than other big brand options I reviewed . Theres a bunch of other features I havent even gotten to yet.

SCANNING: Using the drivers and software from the enclosed CD, the PC menu did not show scan sizes larger than A4. Called help-line, and could not figure out why. Escalated to higher level help for subsequent call-back (pending). Subsequent download and re-install of the full software/driver package from the Brother web-site did not change the menu sections for paper dimensions. A3 / 11x17 sizes did not show. Via the Brother software already installed downloaded latest software/driver again (and now allowed the installation of fax drivers that I do not need and had not installed initially). Now the menu shows the larger paper sizes under the size selection. Having scanned documents for several hours over two days the unit started to develop a sharp, but not loud, "purr", which sounded like it was coming from plastic gears. Now, starting scanning on third day, the unit is very loud, a disconcerting noise that sounds like an impending failure. Having scanned thousands of documents with a previous MFC-6430 without fault, this is disappointing. The MFC-6430 was discarded due to plugged printer head (as was the subsequent Epson WF-7620), not because of failing drives/ gears (which I suspect is already happening after some hours of scan operation). With dual scanner heads, two-sided scanning is a breeze! Big plus, and eliminates the potential for feed error that could be a problem with the above mentioned two units when the condition of the paper was less than perfect. Scan quality is very good. No mis-feeds of normal paper (unless thin, glossy paper, out of magazines, but even then it is impressive and forgiven for a few mis-feeds of paper which likely is not part of the units design criteria). And the ADF scanning operation was so quiet!, ... with the unit fresh out of the box. PRINTING: So, far, just test prints, but prints fast, and nice output. Louder than Epson. COST: The price is really amazing (low) for these units (including previously mentioned ones), but as usual, will be paying for it via ink purchases. If I decide that the new noise and noise level is a "personality trait" rather than impending ADF feed/ gear failure I will keep the printer.

This is the second purchase of this printer. The first one had a defective NIC card. This second one had defective print heads. It smeared and skipped lines all over the pages immediately upon use. We did extensive trouble shooting, cleaned, aligned print heads and paper, new ink, etc. without success. We have Brother printers that have been power houses in our small business with life spans over 8 years. We were purchasing this for a replacement but had to return. These Brother printers were not the same quality that we have experienced in the past. Since we print and scan ledger size documents, we were hoping this was going to provide what we needed. Very disappointed in product.

Now I have used it for month or so. And it is still going strong. I have yet to hear loud grinding noises, cnstant cleaning of the heads, and dang it, it still wont make coffee. I am a game designer and use it to make 11x17 game maps, counters and rules. Paper, card stock, HA! It laughs at all of them. And for several Christmas presents, I made over 50 8x10, 20 5x7, and 30 4x6 photos. No complaints. It actually wore me out. Scanning and sending to my computer is the only thing I cant do it and it is my fault as I cant get windows 10 firewall to allow it (could be my silly anti-virus too - Bit Defender - that is one sob of an anti-virus, it doesnt allow any thing thru). Outside of that, I can scan to a USB stick with no problem. Faxing is great. The lil debil in me has me turn on the fax when phone scammers call and let them get that high pitch squeal. Its funny how quickly they hang up. So that is my review after a bit more of a month. If I could give this 2 more stars, I would. It is well designed and built. re-writing my review. It works, it prints fabulous, but it cant make coffee. Others have had problems, not me. I have put it thru its paces and it has exceeded thru everything. No splotchy color, no lines in solid colors, no abnormal paper jams, it works with everything I have thrown at it - from GP paper 20lb, to photo paper, to card stock 60lb & 100lb. It is quick, it is quiet, and one can turn the ringer off on the fax. It just cant make coffee no matter how hard I plea. The only thing I didnt like is the bloated software that comes with it. One cannot individually install programs, you either install all or none. One should have ability to install what one wants to install. It can be hooked up via USB, wireless or even a cat6 cable. That is how I run it, a 25 cat 6.

This MFC is very competent, excellent cloud integration, and I can fax from my mobile device. But as a business class printer, the inks really should be water resistant, so I deducted a star. Its not as sleek looking as its predecessor, and the screen is not as brilliant or high contrast either. But I kinda dig the new retro klunky look LOL. If it wasnt so feature rich Id be more harsh but it is a Great Leap Forward toward fully integrated home use.

The description for this printer sounds great, but it not reliable. The basic printer function works only 50% of the time and I only print 1-5 pages a month. It keep displaying no paper feed errors, and if you follow the on screen instructions it will never solve the problem. You have to power cycle the printer 5-10 times and it will work. The printer appears to have many firmware problems, and Brother knows there is a problem because the same problems change a little bit after each automatic firmware updates. I wish that I could still get ink cartridges for my old Brother printer that was over 15 years old, it wasnt fast but worked every time. Seriously, this printer is junk.

Other than its very large size, it has been a great printer so far. Being an over 65 woman, I did have to hire someone to carry it to my upstairs office loft. I bought it specifically because it also prints 11x17 and am pleased the the quality. After the ink cartridges are used which come with the printer (3017), do buy the extra large cartridges (3019) as they are a better value. Some have complained about misfeeds, but have not had that problem. A heavy cardstock sheet is included to be used to run through the printer to help clean up misfeeds. I will certainly use it as directed if I do have a misfeed.

Im a small business owner who was tired of going through cheap printers, so I bit the bullet and bought this printer. It was great at first-fast, good quality printing. After about 6 months, it started losing connection to the wifi frequently. Initially it was as simple as turning the router on and off again. Eventually, it became some complicated issue that required me to be on hold with customer service reps to fix. In the last 2 months, Ive spent over 4 hours on the phone or trying problem solve it. Ive even broken down and had to pay for copies at FedEx when I needed something in a hurry. While the customer service is great, the wait times are long. For a product of this price, these things should not be an issue. (We do not have difficulty with any other devices in our home losing wifi connection.) As a business owner, these are things I dont have time to deal with.

Fresh out of the box this worked well. Airprint with my phone, wireless with my laptop, wired with my desktop, its my 3rd brother printer for my business and I work them fairly hard. This one is quite a bit slower than the others to spool up and start printing, once it starts its pretty fast so I was ok with that. BUT! a firmware update came through a bit ago and now it claims to be set up with Wi-Fi but only works with the hardwired desktop. The laptop, phone and my tablet cant find it. Very frustrating. The online help is a pain (as is all online help when youre trying to run a business that involves human customers who want attention)

Constantly have to reinstall drivers. Worst printer Ive owned due to lost production time and messing around with tech support. I go to scan and get a message that the computer cant communicate with the printer (over WIFI). I delete then reinstall the same driver and it works again. No rhyme or reason as to why. Pain in the neck. Sometimes I have to reboot my whole WIFI system as well as reinstall the drivers. Also, maybe 2 out of 10 scans get fed through straight. As a wide format printer/scanner the letter sized pages feed sideways which gives more opportunity for the printer to pull them through askew. With a narrow end first format its only 8 1/2" its dealing with but this thing grabs them on the 11" side and they get skewed. As a result a large majority of scans come out crooked. As Im using this for a business I cant present crooked docs so I rescan until its straight.
