Amazing for the price. How to reset toner count (it tells you its empty well before it is.): --Open front cover. leave it open. --Turn printer off. --Hold go button while turning printer on. --After 3 seconds of printer being back on, release both buttons. --Press Go button 9 times. -Yellow LEDs will lite up. --Press go button 5 times. --Close the cover. Toner is now reset. DRUM RESET ONLY: -Make sure that the machine is turned on. -Open the front cover. -Open front cover -Press and hold Go for about four seconds until all of the LEDs light up. Once all four LEDs are lit, release Go. -Close the front cover. -Make sure the Drum LED is now off.

This is basically factory-crippled garbage. The toner "page count" is a hard stop, meaning the printer will stop working when Brother wants to extort you into buying a new cartridge, even if, as in my case, there is no sign of lightening, streaking, or any other indication that toner is even low, much less out. Several other posters have said that you can reset the page count with a complex series of button pushes. It is ridiculous that you should have to go through this, and the advice is conflicting, but the following worked for me. In any event, I will NEVER buy Brother again.

I printed approximately 500 pages total. Then one day, about 1 hour later after printing 30 pages, the printer caught on fire. Update July 2017: I contacted Brother because this printer was 1 month outside the Amazon warranty. Brother at first refused, and inferred I may be lying, stating there is no way the printer could have caught fire in the way that it did. I had the printer placed alone on a wood shelf with nothing around it, and the power cord plugged into an outlet few feet away. I printed about 30 pages in a row, picked up the paper and immediately left. When I returned a few hours later there was a strong smell of electronics fire, and the printer was as pictured (not on fire, but still warm). There is some light evidence of flames on the bottom of the shelf above, but no other evidence of fire anywhere around. The printer shows signs of the fire starting internally. This printer certainly did catch on fire. After fighting with Brother for a few weeks they finally offered to replace it with a refurbished model, never admitting any fault. I realize this isnt a common issue with these printers or Im sure we would see more reports. I dont rule out that this was a freak accident and unlikely to happen again. Im just sharing my experience with this product.

1. The toner trick by covering cartridge with tape doesnt work with this cartridge/printer. The printer keeps the page count you will have some toner left in the cartridge every time. Sometimes enough to print 500 or more pages 2. The the popular aftermarket toner ez something didnt work for me. I googled it and reset the cartridge by opening side and turning plastic wheel in 8:00 position. Now Im crossing my fingers hoping it continues to work 3. A poster on Amazon suggested when your current cartridge runs out ,press the go button seven times it will then let you continue to print I tried this and it works 4. I have this printer hardwired to my Mac Mini and by sharing the printer on my network in settings I am able to print wirelessly from my laptop by installing a program called bonjour or something on the pc laptop. That lets me do this. (Had to google it) 5. Many people say to reset the drum count every time you replace the toner cartridge from what I gather you leave The front cover open and then you press the go button for about four seconds until all the LEDs light up and then you release. Then close the door the drum light should be off

Brother is still playing their stupid game with toner. I get a hundred pages out of their "starter" toner cartridge, and then the printer will not let me print anymore. IT decided my toner was low and needs replacing (based on page count?). That it is printing just fine for my purposes, is irrelevant. That I dont mind having less than 100% toner density is irrelevant. It physically stops the printer from functioning until I go out and buy another toner cartridge. Or until I go back on line and google the reset sequences to fake it into thinking it has a new cartridge. My customer is standing here and I cant hand him a !_&&%$@!$ receipt! This is almost criminal. Its my printer, I bought it, and if I want to print until the letters are barely visible, thats my business. At the point mine locked up and refused to print, the print quality was visually indistinguishable from when it started.

The Brother line of the HL printers offer an inexpensive and efficient solution to everyday printing. I own the HLL2300D and a HL-227ODW and use one at work and one at home. The printers come packaged very well with clear instructions detailing how to get your printer up and running. The print speed is fast enough and the automatic double-sided printing is a huge bonus. The toner cartridge is cheap to replace and installs with a snap. The footprint of the printer is also very small so it takes up less desk space.

Have had NOTHING BUT TROUBLE with this printer since purchase. Have purchased two drums because I was told that may be the problem as to why its putting lines across every other page. As a court reporter, my transcript pages must be pristine, with no lines or blemishes. Im now investing in a laser printer about three times the price of this one and hope thatll do the trick......at least it will hold twice as much paper as the tray with this printer holds and will print 21 more pages per minute than this one. Im very disappointed and feel I wasted my money. Will now send to be recycled.

This is a pretty cheapskate thing to do... charge me 3 dollars more but include all the pieces to use the printer in the box. It is absurd have to search the fine print of your product description to find out im missing some tiny inexpensive piece required to make the device function.

FIRE HAZARD-DO NOT BUY IF YOU LIVE IN AN OLD HOUSE.As several other customers have noted, the printer is loud and hot and in my case, caused the lamp sitting about two feet away to flicker whenever I printed something. I live in an old house from the 50s and I think our electrical outlets are not designed for a device that uses this much power. The other awful thing about this printer is that the on/off switch never worked--right out of the box. It was pain in the butt to add paper because the paper trays are right on top of each other at the bottom f the device. I always pulled out the wrong tray. After six months, it died altogether and I got an HP Officejet 3830 which is quiet, doesnt pull much power and has a working on/off button.

I work from home and needed to buy a printer since my primary printers ink was way too expensive to keep replacing constantly at my own cost. I needed a basic black and white printer, nothing fancy since I already have an additional printer/scanner that does everything else. This was absolutely perfect. I was able to buy this, the USB cable (thanks fellow Amazon reviewers), a case of paper and two ink cartridge refills for about $107.00. I thought I would need my IT department to add the printer for me since I dont have admin permissions but once I plugged in the USB cable, I was ready to print. I cannot believe how fast it prints and its so quiet. Since I have to pay for this and not get reimbursed, this is a perfect solution for me. I couldnt even buy new ink for my other printer for the cost of this machine. Money well spent.
