This is the third monitor I have used with my new computer, which was purchased in late November, 2012. I confess, that at best, Im a simple man and not a techie, so I wanted a good monitor for my simple means. I use Photoshop, read and create a lot of documents, play some games, and watch YouTube, as well as the occasional DVD on this computer. For these uses, this monitor ranks far above what I really need, but at least by having this now, I have some room to grow with as my needs change. Granted, I dont know enough to be as nit picky as some people are, but I can attest to this, based on the other two monitors I tested, this has so far proved to be a solid, superior monitor. PROS: It has a 2ms response time. This pretty much eliminates blur on fast action videos and games. BUT, you need to have a fast graphics card as well for fast response time. The screen is matte / non-glare. This was crucial for my needs. My eyesight isnt all that great even with my glasses, but I can say that this monitor is very crisp and clear. I no longer have to hunch forward to read fuzzy lettering. It has various inputs, VGA, DVI, HDMI, so this will work with older computers, as well as the newest ones. There is an option for the monitors photo sensor to recognize the light of the room, and adjust itself accordingly. Note: This option has to be selected in the menu. This monitor allows for Picture In Picture. I dont have a use for it, but some of you may desire this feature. The cords can be routed through the arm of the base which will make everything look more tidy. It has a VESA mount, so if you want to attach an upgraded monitor stand or wall mount, you can. It arrived in perfect condition. No dead pixels, no scratches, no worries. IT HAS A 3 YEAR WARRANTY! This was a high sell point for me. CONS: The menu for adjusting the screen is less than helpful, but some trial and error will eventually get you to change the settings if you need to. Personally, I just had to turn down the brightness, and that was good enough for me. It does NOT come with a manual or an installation CD. Sometimes the CD will include the manual, but again, you dont even get the disc. However, you can download the manual from their website. After doing so, the only useful thing I got out of that was learning how to navigate through the menu buttons. MY BOTTOM LINE: In my humble opinion, I have to say that this monitor is of superb quality to the average / above average consumer. As I said before, this was the third monitor for my computer, and it would seem that 3rd time was the charm. Thank you for reading this review, and I hope it was of help to you. My first time ASUS product, purchased to use on a recent refurbished Optiplex with advanced graphics. Optiplex provided only VGA and dual Display Ports, so I opted for this VE248Q. Pros: Monitor offers VGA, HDMI and Display Port connections. Cables provided for VGA-VGA and DVI-HDMI (computer-to-monitor) Generous base for the big 24" screen, steady. Control buttons are on the underside, well marked and easy to access (unlike some brands!) Resolution established 1920x1080 at first startup, bright images, crystal clear, no flicker observed. Easy to view from the sides, non-glare matte surface. Internal speakers and a headphone jack. Windows driver cd. Con: Instructions are sparse: a single sheet poster-size newsprint "manual", printed in 32 languages however, You are given a button diagram and just a 2x3" text box with 6 numbered short "instructions" describing the 6 buttons. You are informed what each does without saying what menu or why. Monitor provides a typical OSD (on-screen-display) menu. Back-side of this poster shows you what cables get plugged where (but only in 28 languages, sorry) for those who are plug-wise challenged. Specifications claim the display is VESA wall-mountable, but find nothing in the instructions or backside of the display to indicate this. The ASUS website wasnt of much help either. But if this is not your first smart monitor, all will work itself out, just experiment a little. Bottom Line: recommended, appreciate the display size and quality, and optional connectivity. There are more features available than ASUS discloses. Good value.

Ive been shopping around for a new monitor for quite some time. I always do my research before making a purchase, and it was no different with this monitor. Having been a past ASUS component owner who is impressed with the quality and innovation in their products, I ended up searching around for quite a while only to come back to them. I started out with quite a list of features I was looking for in a monitor, and I wasnt sure I could find any monitor that could satisfy the list of essential features. But then I found the VE278Q. The monitor has everything I wanted in a top of the line monitor, and it delivers in every way exceptionally well. Ill do a pros and cons list first, then round this out with more info: PROS: +Excellent color quality - very rich and accurate color when calibrated. +Super fast - no ghosting. +Even lighting - no backlight bleeding. +Wide range of input options, and audio options. +Very bright, instant on with no warm up time, and outstanding contrast. +Solid range of adjustments, video modes, and display capabilities. +Anti-glare coating removes nearly all glare. +Price is low for such quality monitor. +No dead pixels. +Very good max viewing angles with minimal color distortion +Decent internal speakers that dont waste visible space if you dont need them. CONS: -I cant really think of any RATING: VALUE: 10 FEATURES: 10 SETTINGS: 9 QUALITY: 10 DESIGN: 10 OVERALL: 9.8 ADDITIONAL INFO: **** Input options: HDMI, Display Port, DVI, and RGB inputs - an outstanding range of input options. It also has a stereo audio input that will output sound from the internal speakers, which I might add arent half bad for a display thats so thin. They dont have much distortion even at max volume (which is pleasingly loud), and thanks to internal Bass and Treble settings you can make them sound pretty good, though still not as good as a dedicated desktop system. I didnt expect much from them, but I was surprised. There is also a line out jack that works wonders for HDMI content. I currently have audio coming from my PS3 (along with 1080P video) in a different room through an HDMI splitter into this monitor, going out the line out on the monitor and into the line in on my PC, which then outputs the sound to my high quality desktop speakers that are connected to my PC (this lets me share audio between the two). The way it handles HDMI audio is a truly outstanding bonus, and it really made this monitor far more useful to me as a secondary display for my other HDMI entertainment devices. **** Video options: The display features customizable "Splendid" picture modes (5 total, with sRGB being raw, and non-configurable), sharpness adjustment, "Trace Free" which attempts to remove any additional ghosting as far as I can tell, and ASCR (ASUS Super Contrast Ratio) which is available as an option for all display modes except sRGB and "Standard", and AI Light which adjusts the back light to a balanced level with the room lighting. Of those options I use the following settings. I set Sharpness down from 50 to 40 to give the display a nice smooth look for reading text, and it works very well, since the display is otherwise one of the sharpest I have seen. I set "Trace Free" to 0, since with a 2ms response time, ghosting is essentially nonexistent (this monitor is fast!). I leave ASCR on, since it really does do an amazing thing for gaming - the display can literally go pitch black when a dark scene is on the screen, and then within 1-2 seconds ramp up to eye burning max brightness when needed. AI Light works great, but it should be noted that it is only available when ASCR is disabled, since both cause adjustment of the LED lighting. The monitor has no gamma adjustment, but it does feature custom color temperature settings with an R/G/B adjustment menu along with some presets (Cool/Normal/Warm). My current settings for R/G/B are R: 83, G: 76, B: 69 to make it match the calibrated output tone of my top of the line theater projector. I set color to 43 for all modes to prevent clipping, and contrast to 67 to keep color tone balance consistent across the entire grayscale, and again prevent clipping. It looks very, very nice with a bit of adjustment. Uncharacteristically warm for an LCD, in a good way. Ive always been a fan of the warm, smooth, fast look of CRTs. This monitor is the first one Ive seen that I could say matches and exceeds all of those characteristics. **** More features: Picture in picture works excellent, allowing you to move the smaller image window and change its size. You can have picture in picture from one of the other inputs that you arent currently using as a primary for the entire screen. Audio tone adjustments allow you to make audio from the internal speakers sound pretty great for internal speakers in my opinion, and if nothing else they give you some freedom to tweak the sound coming from your HDMI line thats coming out to your speakers or headphones. The buttons on the bottom of the display are hidden well, which I like, and offer quick access to PIP, backlight brightness, speaker volume, input, and Splendid modes. Overall I love the ease of access and the audio/video features of this monitor. Its uncommon to find many of these features in a PC oriented display. **** Design/quality: The design of the monitor is very nice. I love that the screen is antiglare, and the entire monitor is glossy. It really makes the image look raw and undisturbed in contrast to the glossy exterior. Its great. The backlighting is extremely bright if you want it to be, instantly lit with no warm up, has a very neutral color tone (I expected the typical LED blue hue), and lights the screen very evenly without any bleeding at the edges. It also makes little to no heat, no hum, and shouldnt dim over time like traditional CCFL panels. The display controls are hidden pretty well, but are easy to access when needed. The speakers output audio from grills on the top of the monitor, and sound pretty decent. The AI Light sensor sits at the top of the monitor between the two speakers. The base is very sturdy and actually looks pretty nice. It has as much tilt range as Ive found myself needing. The monitor has well placed 100mm x 100mm VESA mount holes as well, which I plan to utilize very soon. OTHER NOTES: +Gamma was hard to pin down to 2.2, since out of the box it sits at about 1.8 (This could be related to my default ICC profile, as there is no driver disk with the monitor). +Yellow push was visible in skin tones out of the box, though there is a skin tone setting to adjust around this a bit (This could also be related to my monitor ICC profile). +I loved this monitor so much that as soon as I used it for a week, I purchased a second one. If there are noticeable differences between both monitors I will make note of it here. UPDATE - December 9th, 2010: As noted above, I have returned to report if there were any differences between the first VE278Q and the second one that just arrived today. Im very pleased to say that they are visibly identical in all but completely black scenes (there is a slightly different spread on the back lighting between them). The color tone is within 100K of the original at the same settings. There are again, no dead/stuck pixels or sub pixels. Call me impressed. With extended desktop between these two identical monitors, I now have an outstanding work station. Hope this review helps others! If Amazon gets some more of these in, I may get one more for my other desktop - these are too good to pass up.

FOR THOSE REVIEWS WITH DEAD/MALFUNCTIONING PIXELS: Sorry people, Ive seen youre pictures and is well within ISO 13406-2 guidelines for Class II LCDs of "four dead pixels and ten dead sub-pixels would be within tolerances". Asus specifically, has a zero dead pixel policy -that is all three sub-pixels, but allows up to 5 dead sub-pixels. So, if you have a green dot in the center of the screen that means theres two dead sub-pixels.. it sucks that you got one of these, but what else can I say -all manufactures are like this on Class II devices. You want a guarantee, pay more for a Class I and find the manufacture that has a zero-defect policy. MY EXPERIENCES: I put this TV through a lot of use. Primarily, my laptops second montior. Each of the ports has been used in a variety of scenarios as I tried to find a configuration that worked the best for me. The default colors are very bright (florescent even) including the blacks which tended to wash out the entire screen. Its very noticeable when trying to use in MS Office applications or when readig any other text document. It was absolutely horrible on my eyes drying to read PDFs. And because of this, regardless of how I adjusted brightness / contrast I just couldnt use it for its intended purpose and give me a second monitor for my school work. Images worked splendidly, videos as long as the background was not white. I FOUND A FIX: After 18 months I finally found a graphics card setting that fixed the washed out colors. This HOWTO describes the Intel Graphics card (Nvidia/Asus will be similar however). make sure to reset the color preferences on the TV itself first. Then, go to your graphics properties (typically right-click desktop -> graphics properties). Your cards control panel should appear. Click "Display", click "Color Settings" and then select your display in the drop-down menu. Down at the bottom under "Color Enhancement" set GAMMA all the way to the left for "All Colors". The settings I found acceptable for black text on white background are: Brightness = 0, Contrast = 40, Gamma = 0.4 --Next click the "Advanced" tab and Make sure that YCMC is enabled (or something like that). Have a text document open on the TV to find the values that suit your preferences. Audio is pretty decent too. The caveat is that my laptop automatically switches audio output to the TV when I use the HDMI port. Its secondary role, as PS4 TV, I have no words to express how awesome my experience with this TV is. Ive used a 48" and 54" TV and this TV outperforms in every way. First, it allows me to play guilt-free without hogging the TV (which Im sure my wife really appreciates). Second, its response time is really good. Input lag seems down considerably too. And TBH I play FPS much better, so much so that my Kill Death ratio increased even playing objectives. I used to average ~0.8, but now Im averaging 4 per match. Maybe its because I can focus better sitting 16" - 18" away from the monitor, maybe more crappy players are online than before? I can certainly tell when theres better players on the other side, but at any rate I used to be able to tell how crappy the my team was depending on my position on the board. The higher up I was the worse my team was LOL -definitely slaughter fest.

The monitor is great! Picture quality is BEAUTIFUL - but 3 stars given because the company that is building these and attaching the tilt adjustment bracket are tightening them to the point that the monitor cannot be tilted. I connected the stand, and the monitor tilted downwards to the point of me having to sit on the floor to view the screen! Fixing it required removing the bracket and strong arming it back and forth until it released and started moving - there was ZERO movement for tilt. If I had of adjusted while attached to the monitor, it would have snapped off! Took 10-15 minutes of working it back and forth for it to loosen enough to allow for adjustment after attaching it back onto monitor.

Sometimes I read reviews and think, "ok, that was user error" or "this person is technologically crippled". Neither is a slight on the person, just you shouldnt blame a product if you dont have the know how to use it. Youtube is right there people. It has almost anything instruction on anything, ever. On to the monitor. First of 27" is BIG. I didnt quite realize it. But it is quite large. Thing the size of some tv screens when square back in the day before HD. So on my desk it is almost too big. Like at a movie theater seat too close to the screen. So it you sit close to the monitor via the desk I would go 24" or something. Anyway, not the products fault I didnt have the right perspective on how big it was. Out of the box I connected the stand (if this is hard, you fail as a human) and then plugged in the power cord, plugged in the audio cable and then got my OWN HD cable. It comes with one for a desktop with one of those grid plugs (dont know what that is called) but not HD to HD. I bought this for my laptop to have another screen. On plug in it copied my laptop (MSI Gaming) to the monitor. Went into settings and it made it a 1-2 and presto, had my second screen. Thats it, all I had to do. If you have trouble, I suggest A) a better computer, or B) a newer one. I didnt have to download a driver or anything. Looks great. Now, is it AMAZING visual quality? No, it is a $160 monitor and that is pretty cheap. They cost in the thousands for top end. But it is real HD and very bright (had to turn mine down). You can do some tweaking to look better, but it certainly isnt hard. Though over 70 year old MIGHT have trouble figuring out the buttons. 50 and younger should have enough practical technology experience to figure it out. Just remember to measure, cause this thing . . . . is big.

I use a laptop as my main desktop computer in my college dorm, but just needed some more screen space to increase my productivity on assignments. My budget was around $100 dollars, and I wanted HDMI and 1080p resolution. From reading hundreds of reviews, this was one of the best monitors I found for around that price. Here are my own observations: Design: I have always trusted Asus, and admired their quality. The plastic on this monitor is no exception. It is very well built and I have no doubt it will hold up for years. The stand is sturdy as well. My only gripe is that the monitor is a little thick, but for the price and age, I cant complain. The speakers arent much to speak of, but a very cool bonus feature. 8.5/10 Picture: Although the color is slightly inconsistent when viewing from wide angles, I love the quality of the screen. Colors are vibrant, accurate, and make for an excellent picture when calibrated correctly. I loved the matte finish, as it reduces screen glare. 9/10 Ports: This monitor has the standard HDMI, DVI, and VGA inputs, with an additional AUX input for the built in speakers (see later). I wish the ports were a little easier to access, perhaps facing out of the back instead of parallel, but this was no issue once I had everything set up. I think the design is great for compact cable management. 9/10 Software: The menus and setting provided, especially for the picture, are simple and easy to use! I found the monitor easy to use. From the PC end, this monitor is plug and play, requiring no real setup. 10/10. Overall: If anyone is looking for an affordable or second monitor, definitely check this monitor (or similar models by ASUS) out! I would definitely consider purchasing a second, although I would buy one without the speakers (they are a little thinner).

I had been using a 23.5" monitor for quite a few years. My daughter had an Asus monitor and every time I would see hers and then go back to mine, my picture looked rather dull in comparison. Decided I wanted a new monitor and then figured I would get a bigger 27" to expand my view. After repeated viewings of my daughters Asus, it was pretty much of a no brainer which one I was going to get. Decided on this one and Im not disappointed. Going bigger is easier on my old eyes and the display on this is splendid. A note on speakers. I have a 5.1 speaker setup on my computer. This monitor has built in speakers which my previous one did not. When I hooked it up, sound was coming from the monitor speakers and not my computers speakers. I was not happy for a minute (as the monitor speakers are not very good in comparison). Then I went to control panel/sound and saw since the Asus monitor had speakers, Windows had changed the default sound to the Asus monitor. Changed it back to my computer speakers and all was well. Another note. If you want the straight HDMI connection on both ends, you have to provide your own HDMI cable. This monitor comes with a cable that has HDMI on one end (as this monitor does not have a DVI connection) and DVI on the other end that hooks up to your video card. Perfectly fine, especially if your video card doesnt have a HDMI connection. Just dont use the VGA connection, old tech and wont do the monitor justice. Anyway, good monitor. Asus makes good stuff, no doubt about it. BTW, some have commented here about this not being an LED monitor. It is. The "LED" tag that is put on monitors refer to being LED backlit which this one is. Its just a branding deal. Some monitors use the name LED and some use LCD with LED backlit. Both are the exact same thing. As far as no drivers for this monitor, Asus doesnt provide them if they are not needed. There would be no difference from the Windows stock monitor drivers.

My old monitor was growing dim and taking ona green color so it was time for a new one. If you found this from a list of supported freesync monitors you got the wroung thing. This is the VE278Q and NOT the supported VG278 models. This monitor does not support FreeSync. The documentation is pretty poor but its a great monitor for my needs and at the correct price point. I got the one with Display port, HDMI, VGA and Dvi-D dual link. Since it is difficult to find here are the relevant specs: Panel Size: Wide Screen 27.0″(68.6cm) 16:9 True Resolution : 1920×1080 Pixel Pitch : 0.311mm Brightness(Max) : 300 cd/㎡ ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio (ASCR) : 10000000:1 Viewing Angle (CR≧10) : 170°(H)/160°(V) Response Time : 2ms (Gray to Gray) Display Colors : 16.7M Analog Signal Frequency : 24~92 KHz(H)/ 50~85 Hz(V) Digital Signal Frequency : 24~92 KHz(H)/ 50~85 Hz(V) Picture-in-Picture HDCP support As one expects, this is not a monitor for folks that need color matching , high end gaming or passible speakers. This is a value monitor for the rest of us with solid but not great PIP. Low 2ms presence acceptable vertical and horizontal refresh rates and a bright clear picture. I enjoy its size as the 27" diagonal makes reading easier even without my glasses. Games look great on this monitor as do movies and xbox. About the only flaw for me is that the ambient light sensor is at the top center of the screen -- RIGHT where sensible folks put a webcam clip mount so your webcam has to be placed a bit off center. The stand is another pain point as it lacks height adjustment. I would have preferred the cable jacks be in the rear not bottom, of the monitor as it the bottom bezel placement makes the cable hard to emplace, remove and is kind of ugly as you can see the cords at the base of the monitor . The cable management holes are a tight fit if you use three cables. To be polite, the speaker sound is just AWFUL dont use the speakers. Just dont do it. The sound is tiny, distorted and hollow. The sound from the speakers is headache and cringe inducing. I get better sound froma nice che3ap set of headphones or powered speakers. The kit I got had a dvi-d and a vga / dsub cord . It would have been nice to have a DisplayPort or HDMI cable instead. Still I am happy with my purchase. I did not really need speakers I needed a bigger , bright monitor with "good enough" gaming chops.
