I got this laptop solely because it had gtx1060 6gb in $900 range. Turns out, there was a lot of compromises that slips through the product description. First off, gtx1060 6GB is NOT the gtx1060 6GB we all know. It is Max-Q designed specifically for DELL. You might know that Max-Q is generally about 10% weaker than regular one. What you might not know is that this is DELL Max-Q, and is not supported by NVIDIA. Any and all driver for this card MUST be downloaded from DELL and DELL must provide it. It will often lag behind what NVIDIA provides, and we have no guarantee how long DELL will support this card in the future. Second, 8GB RAM in this machine comes with 2x4GB sticks. Youd expect to just add in extra 8GB for 16GB, but no. If you want 16GB RAM, be prepared to throw in full $150-200 for it. Also, 128GB SSD that comes with the rig is one of the slowest SSD offered, and is just too small in year 2018. Third, i5 8300H is good, but still reaches 90 degree easy with any CPU intensive game. This is sad truth of mediocre gaming laptop, and is true to this rig too. Fans do get loud to be expected. The laptop in idle seems to be making more electrical sound than other laptops I had. It is not fan sound or hdd, not sure what it is. Fourth, this laptop is FILLED with bloatware and DELL drivers. First time using, and it felt like using a $300 laptop. I had to do a clean install no questions asked. Other than those, decent laptop with good build quality. Keyboard and touch pad feels nice. The screen however is really weak... as expected from a DELL laptop in this price range.

The first thing I did when I received this was replace the RAM, SSD and HDD with better components. The SSD was only 128GB, I upgraded that to a 512GB, replaced the 5400rpm HDD with a 7200rpm, and upgraded the RAM to 16GB. There is still a problem with the bottom not closing securely on the HDD side (for some reason, the HDD that came with it is somehow thinner, Im not sure where to get that form factor since Ive never seen it before. They compromised a lot with the components to keep some build quality and to keep the price down. Overall not too bad, Im just worried about the HDD section not closing securely.

I edit video often and wanted the ability to work with Adobe Premier Pro and other resource intensive software while out and about. I still use my desktop when I can, but this works great while away. Wanted a decent GPU for productivity and gaming, the GTX 1060 works well. The battery lasts a long time with basic browsing, productivity, and playback tasks, but encoding and games can kill it in about an hour. The bezels and overall size are large, but at the price I understand. Sturdy build and an acceptable keyboard. Plenty of ports for what I do. It wouldnt fit into my current laptop backpack, it has been hard to find something to fit it. I like the fact that it looks professional, many other similar laptops would look silly in a work setting. Overall I am very pleased.

This laptop feels very durable. The keyboard is lit, which is nice, and you can change the settings on it for how bright, and when it goes dim. Opening the back cover is done with much eases, only takes 1 screw to do it. There are 2 dimm slots for RAM, 1 slot for the M.2 drive (which is usually taken as the OS drive), and a storage drive. I did manage to upgrade the ram on it and I highly recommend doing that. Its a 64bit os, so either max out the ram at 32gb, or at least go with 16gb. With laptops, I dont tend to worry about ram compatibility too much, but check out other reviewers, do direct searches in the reviews for "ram", "ram upgrade" etc. I did do an upgrade on the HD as well. Get an SSD on a sale, at least 1tb is good. Hell I may even upgrade the OS m.2 drive at some point. 256gb feels a little thin. The graphics are VERY nice with the nividia 1060. However, you will want to use this card at its full potential when it is plugged in with the adapter. Thats a no brainer. It does throttle by default, your 1060 wont perform as well when its on battery, its just how these work with laptops. It needs more power to drive it harder and make it look/perform better, you need the voltage to do that! It performs meh on battery performance wise, but plugging it in is where it truly shines. The screen is nice, its a satin screen so you dont have the glare that the glossy screens have. I havent loaded or played some of the modern hits on this thing, because I dont own them, so I cant speak for the next gen games. Runs WoW like a pro (ok we know its not THAT demanding of a title, but still). Its got quite the card in here, just run it with the adapter if you are gonna push the settings a little bit more, otherwise this thing is quite the mid-range budge gaming laptop. I havent been that much of a fan for Dell in the past, but they did it right with this thing.

My unit came and It was all good and stuff when I played games like Overwatch, Dota, and other less graphically demanding games. Until I started playing games like Witcher 3 and GTA 5. I get constant blue screen and crashes. I tried to diagnose whats going on with my unit, until I realized that its actually the power brick thats messed up, or maybe the battery (or even motherboard that deals with the power). Whenever I plug in power, it crashes/blue screens. I restored everything to the original factory settings, and it still does the same. It still crashes when I plug in the charger on the very first screen where Cortana is talking. Anyways, I think its a pretty great gaming laptop overall for the price, but it does run really hot (95-99Celcius under heavy load) although it doesnt throttle. The only problem is that I might have received a bad unit. Regardless, Im returning it and Ill try something else like MSI or something. So yeah, just FYI, when you receive your unit, try to stress test it with graphically demanding games.

On paper I thought this laptop was a decent deal, however after using it for a couple weeks I returned it. For one, it isnt a true 1060. Its an underpowered 1060 that apparently only Dell puts out drivers for, which is a major down side. I also wasnt crazy about only 8 gigs of RAM, but I was fine with investing a little more money to install 8 more, however this laptop ships with 2 sticks of 4 gigs instead of just 1 stick of 8, so in order to upgrade youll need to buy a full 16 gigs. Lastly, theres a lot of bloat on this thing, mostly from Dell. I guess its common now-a-days but I dont understand why OEMs clutter up their products with this crap. In general this laptop wasnt great for gaming, it even struggled with DOTA 2 on medium settings. I suggest investing a little more money and looking elsewhere.

I bought this laptop in August 2018 and by October 2018 the wireless card started failing. After several hours with Dell support (it’s a long tedious process), they decided that yes in fact I was correct that the wireless card was bad. It’s now December and the audio on the laptop has gone out as well. I’m now on the process of shipping it back for repairs for both issues. Hopefully this fixes my issues but the fact I’ve had this many issues in such a short ownership period will ensure I never purchase a Dell product ever again.

I got this laptop when it was on sale. Although the gpu is the GTX1060 max q, the gpu will still be able to play most mordern games in mid to high settings in full 60 fps. I play alot of jrpg games and so far every single one of them have been running smoothly at 60 fps. The thermals are decent and the only part that gets hot is where the heat sink intertwines, in the middle, but its not hot as to where they burn your fingers. The cpu is the current gen (i5 8th gen) and is a lot faster than the last (I dont really do any cpu intensive things so Im not much help there). The laptop itself is a bit wide and kind of heavy, but that doesnt really bother me as much.
