So far this lens has impressed me but having rented really expensive lens I can see the differences. If you are starting out or just want a carry around lens this is a good buy. It has surprised me on some of the shots I took.

The original, non-VR version of this lens is not bad at all, but this version is substantially better. Its definitely not for 1,000 click a day professional use. Yes, this falls into the dreaded "kit lens" category, but it is actually better than some of the so-called upgrade lenses. The three-times pricier 18-200 is shaking in its shoes and the 70-300 might as well hide in the corner. The lens takes excellent pictures on my D40, D300, and D300s (crop cameras only !) Autofocus is quick. The VR is a major plus ! The lens is very light and user-friendly. Given the next real step up would be the $700 70-200 f4 or $1800 f2.8, us people who dont use these to make a living will be very happy with the results.

I bought this to replace the lens that came with my camera, which was a slightly older version of the same model. I encountered the same problem that some other users had with this lens, which is that sometimes the camera will display "Lens Not Attached" even when the lens is... well, attached. This lens has a small button on the side which allows it to retract into a "closed" position. Pressing the button and twisting the lens it out of this position will cause your camera to register that the lens is attached and operate as usual! Im glad to have this feature because this makes my camera easier to store in my camera bag when Im on the go and dont constantly want to remove and reattach the lens entirely. Im very happy with my purchase and definitely recommend it to anyone looking to give new life to their old Nikon.

This is the perfect kit lens for anyone starting out with an SLR. The VR (virbation reduction) feature is especially suited to a young person whose hands are not so steady, or is not yet familiar with the concept of camera shake. The zoom range is quite limited, but is all that can be expected in such a light-weight lens.

I bought this lens to replace my kit lens. I had accumulated variety of lenses. I did not think I would really need the original kit lens, so I gave it away. I found that the range on that kit lens was desirable for many shooting situations plus it was short and compact (hmm Quandary). The old kit lens was not a good close focus lens. Also, using a lens hood caused vignetting at 18mm. I always had to back it off a touch. This new version really lets you focus down to about 6 inches. Also, there is no problem with the vignette affect at the widest focal length. So it’s Win Win. So now I can travel light with confidence. I keep it mostly on my D5100 for light casual shooting but occasionally use it on my D300s and my D600 in DX mode. I found it a great general purpose lens on all. Small (nice), Light (nice), VR (nice). When you close the lens (all the way down) it locks. You have to unlock and set the focal length before you shoot. I must say it took me a while to get use to this (my cameras would report no lens attached) duh! Once I did I even loved that. My results are good. I love it. I would love to have a full frame version that maintained this size and weight. I did buy this lens off the used list so I saved some money there. I have not gone wrong with the Like New lenses I have bought in the past. A surprise this copy was refurbished and like new. Win again. I recommend getting this lens even if you think you don’t need it. Oh one more comment, this lens extends a little further than the old kit lens. So if you use the on camera flash to when you close focus you may get a shadow you don’t want. To keep it light I tend to use my SB400 instead of the on camera flash. You can bounce it or use a reflector. Hope this helps ya’ll.

I have more than a few Nikon lenses and would not normally have gone with this particular one except that recently had a Nikon D7000 converted for IR use [only] the the conversion company said that this was a good lens for that purpose. At this moment, I have to agree and it will be the permanent lens on the converted body.

Great basic lens. It doesnt have huge zoom capacity, but thats because it is relatively compact. For some reason, the camera body often tells me that the lens is not attached, even when it is attached and operational. I dont know whether that is the fault of the lens or the camera body. I have learnt just to ignore the error message. My only real complaint is that it does not have the right focal length for great macros.

Very nice little lens. Took it out to shoot our annual Texas Bluebonnet Trip and it took some really sharp pictures. My D7100 came with a 18-140mm lens which is wonderful, but gets really heavy after an hour or two. This little guy is light weight, and I drug it around for several hours. Between this lens and my Tokina Ultra Wide, I think I got some really great shots. Seller was accurate in his description and quick on delivery. The lens was packaged REALLY well. Would buy from this seller again!

I recently got a Nikon D3200 with a 55-200mm lense (non VR *FeelsBadMan*) , and I wanted the standard kit lense. I was going to get the 1st gen VR 18-55, but the smaller profile of the VRII put it over the top. Now if Nikon made a VR II of the 55-200 .. *Kappa*

This is a upgraded lens for the original Nikon, is quite a bit lighter, and has a barrel lock button that my other lens didnt have. I just hope the lightness of the lens isnt because the optics arent as well made. The only way to know about that is with continued use. Ill let you know if things go sour. But honestly I think this is well made and will last a long time.
