This light works well for amateur shooting. I havent tried it mounted to the shoe, but as a ring light its worked great for anything close-up. The only minor thing I noticed is that when I have my 18-55mm lens zoomed all the way out, I can see the light a little bit around the edges. If you are close to the subject and still need to shoot at that wide an angle though, you could just mount the light up top. It is super bright when its turned all the way up. Bright enough to make me sneeze if I try to look at it. The last picture is with the 18-55mm lens all the way in. You can see the ring of white around the edges.

I actually bought this macro light at full price. It has served me well. I use 6 rechargeable AA batteries to power it up. They should last for a while considering that the led lights dont consume too much power from the batteries. Its a simple product to use. Select the correct lens adapter to mount onto the front of your lens. Mount the adapter to the macro ring light. Then screw on the light/adapter onto your lens by spinning it into the front of lens just like you would with a UV filter. Theres one switch to turn on/off the device. And, two small buttons that control the brightness of the led lights. Hold and press the left button to dim (lower) the brightness leds. Or hold and press the right button to brighten the led lighting. If none of the lens adapters fit onto a specific lens.... The entire macro light can be mounted onto the hot shoe of the camera, using the hot shoe mount adapter that comes with the led ring light. So far I have had no issues with this device. It is of good quality. Packaging was good as well.

All six batteries required for the ring light to work at all. They must be in series. Four battery slots worked OK. One slot took a screwdriver to force an AmazonBasic AA, or Ni-MH, or Duracel, AA battery in place. The sixth slot took a hammer to force it in place. Bad plastic moulding probably. The lens adapters worked ok but I bought Neewer step up step down set to adapt to a sony video camera. Plenty of light. It does have + and - buttons to change the light level which is pretty intense. No option for changing color balance from 5600K. After several hammer insertions and removals of the troublesome batteries, they became less troublesome. But for the battery issue it would have earned 4 stars.

Insanely bright - and has 2 buttons to hold down to dim or brighten which is great. I like having no cord and attachment to put in the hotshoe. Only drawback is that its very tightly built and getting all 6 batteries in and out is kind of a pain. But on the upside - for a macro light this thing will light up a room if you put it on high...possibly as bright if not brighter than the cn-160. Need to figure out a way to build a diffuser for it if youre going to use it not for macro on the bright setting. And I wouldnt suggest using it on less than a 50mm lens to avoid light spilling into the lens too close. Otherwise, its really a powerful little beast.

Perfect for what I wanted! Biggest surprise was how insanely bright this light is on full power. I wish it had the ability to dim even a little bit lower than the lowest setting but other than that this light is excellent. I use it with an articulated arm attached to the tripod mount with a GoPro on the other end centered in the ring. Awesome for video!

This light ia very bright and even. It screw-mounts to your lens with provided adapters that can then be removed from the light, leaving the adapter on your lens. Has a brightness adjustment. Only one concern, when turned on, it flashes quite brightly before the electronic regulator stabilizes. Briefly stresses the LEDs a lot. Will see what the long-term reliability is. I design this kind of circuitry, and you should not pulse the LEDs that brightly.

Very bright continuous light. It does exactly what I needed it to do. Attached to a macro lens, it provided the needed illumination. Dont get the cheaper 48 light version. I am glad I went with this one!

The light is very bright and adjustable. I tested it for macro, mounted to the lens, and it worked beautifully. I also took it with me to get some portraits shots with sunset type light, with the subject sitting next to a small waterfall. It did a nice job of illuminating my subject, allowing me to expose for the sunset. This will work in low light conditions with your subject within 10-12 feet, but would not be bright enough to do much in full sunlight conditions. I have not used it enough to be able to rate the battery life.

This ring light is plenty bright! But its super heavy because of all the batteries and both of the lens autofocus motors had to work a little harder (I usually shoot with manual focus anyway but I know a lot of people dont). It has a spot to mount it on a stand and that will be the route I go if using this in a studio.

The first image shows this light connected to an emergency car ignition battery. The second shows it lit by an off-the-shelf 12 v. AC/DC converter. Ive tried other transformers outputting as few as 5 v. The third image shows the 1/4" screw thread at the bottom with the shoe mount.
