Love this little flash! Its light, small and so easy to stuff into a pocket and carry. In real world use, its quite powerful not-withstanding its modest guide number. It integrates beautifully with Nikon digital SLRs providing very accurate through the lens exposure. The battery seems to last forever, and because it uses easily obtained AAAs (two), they can be replaced anytime and obtained internationally without difficulty - no need for another power adaptor! My only negative observation is that it doesnt swivel (left or right) but does tilt upward and even backward (slightly) for indirect flash. For the price, weight, size, and versatility, I couldnt be happier with this. Its so much more convenient than my SB-800 hunker. It doesnt replace the newer bigger units, but its a great travel flash, especially for the D500 and D810 which dont have built in flash (its way better than the built in flash anyway).

This flash is ideal for me because it is compact and easy to carry with you and have on the camera. I have owned several flashes in the past but they were large and bulky making them hard to carry with you and use on your camera. The flash is great when used in a dark area or as a fill in flash. The head of the flash can be rotated up and down to aim the flash where you need it. I am very pleased with it. We take a LOT of pictures of the family and they are usually in the house. As such if you use the flash on the camera you will get black shadows behind the subject. With this flash you can rotated the flash head and bounce the flash off the ceiling and remove the shadows. Even in daylight you can use the flash to make the picture better.

I had been looking at this compact flash here on Amazon and was curious about the size and the capabilities. I happened to be visiting my local mom and pop camera shop and came across this flash. I was just in look-and-see mode. When the sales person placed this small flash in my hands, I knew I was hooked. I typically carry my Nikon P7800 camera with me in my everyday bag. I popped the flash on my camera and the two became one. The flash is well balanced on my P7800. I went ahead and purchased this flash knowing the limitations. The flash distance is not as strong as my SB-400. The SB-300 uses two AAA batteries versus the SB-400 uses two AA batteries. Not a real issue for me as I always carry extra batteries with me. The portability of this flash is a definite plus. With the flash head pointed up (becomes a slender flash), I can easily store this in a small camera bag or purse. The flash head has greater movement that my SB-400. I can bounce the flash up and high behind me. This compact flash comes with a drawstring bag. I have no issues with this bag as its easier to remove this flash quickly versus using my SB-400 and having to unzip its case. Uses: This compact flash is much easier to carry and stow in a camera case. Its a decent flash for fill-in capability. Also decent for bouncing flash in a small area/room. Batteries I use: I plan on using the AAA rechargeable Eneloop batteries with this flash. I already use the Eneloop brand for my SB-400. Photos: I have posted two pictures in the gallery that show a side by side comparison of my SB-300 and SB-400. I will post additional pictures soon. I recommend this compact flash as I now take this everywhere with me along with my P7800. Its small, it has a cute-factor, and I now can take pictures anywhere I go without having to worry about having enough light. ** Updates to the original post ** 07/13/14: Ive posted pictures of the SB-300 on my Nikon P7800 camera. There are several pictures that show how the flash head can be configured. 07/14/14: I put my SB-400 on my Nikon P7800 camera and the older flash is too top heavy for the camera. Not as balanced as my new SB-300. 07/15/14: Ive added a macro shot of my flowers to the gallery using the SB-300. Im really enjoying this flash. Easy to carry and easy to use. 07/17/14: Ive found a diffuser that fits on this flash: EzFoto Flash Diffuser Cap Box for Nikon Speedlite SB-N7

First of all, this flash is much smaller than it appears and that is a good thing. While I enjoy my Nikon DSLRs, and the images they produce, I grew tired of lugging my DSLR, a couple of lenses or a heavy 28-300 and my SB-910 around. While it is great for portraits or certain events, I found I was breaking the cardinal rule of, "The best camera is the one you have with you." I just really didnt want to carry all that gear. Along came the Nikon P7800 camera. Excellent image quality and nice, small size. The Nikon SB-300 speedlight is the perfect complement. It is so tiny. If you have ever held or have seen the SB-400, this unit is even smaller. I love it! Now, I have a very compact camera system that I have with me all the time. I can tuck the camera and this tiny flash in my small bag and go. I always have them with me and with this speedlight, I am always able to expose my shots properly with adequate lighting. It is an excellent buy!

I love this little flash unit. Its definitely not as functional as the ones with more features, but if youre only an occasional flash user like I am and want something that you can remember how to use when you have the occasion, this is a great choice. The one tip I would give to people is that the batteries will run down very quickly if you always use the flash at full power. Since there are no controls on the flash unit itself, its a good idea to use the controls on your camera to dial down the flash power. If you do this, the flash will re-charge more quickly and the batteries will last a lot longer.

Not much to say except for an apparently basic flash it is plug and play. The camera knows what to do with this light, and controls it flawlessly. The big plus is it is light weight and fits into your shirt pocket when not in use. Great gift for the novice as well as a more experienced user. This is the second one, my son claimed the first one for his camera, so rather than argue a second one is in order. Very useful, inside and outdoors. Get a spare as you will be using this all the time.

The SB-300 is what it is, and that is absolutley outstanding. I wanted a speedlight that I could carry in my pocket and slip on my D3s or Df when I needed just a bit more illumination to fill shadows or make a scene a bit brighter. I was scheduled to go for a hop on one of the last flying WWII B-17s and wanted a backup just in case the cabin was not as illuminated as I had hoped/assumed. I ordered the SB-400, but the supplier had over-committed and couldnt ship it. So I ordered the SF-300, and I love it. I did need just a bit of a boost in the interior of the B-17, and this little gem was only perfect for that assignment. I dont get the raps on it. Yes, it uses AAA batteries as opposed to AAs. So what? They are lighter and Eneloop offers them as rechargables, and a couple of extras in your pocket could get lost with the loose change and lint. It does not tilt straight up, but why would you want to? Itll tip to all of the angles I use on my SB-800s and SB-900...quite enough to do the job. Is this a flash youd take on a "shoot" to be artificially lit, or one youd shoot into an umbrella? Of course not. If you want to do that kind of work, buy that kind of equipment. But if what you are looking for is just a bit of a boost or fill light that is easily carried along, this little jewel is for you.

Im a working photographer and often need fill light for outside shots, or flash for inside shots, but I hate walking around with a gigantic flash to complete the "professional photographer" look. And honestly, I love the way the in-camera flash makes the images look, but it doesnt look professional and leaves a shadow with some of my larger lenses. This flash is exactly what I wanted. It is just enough flash to illuminate without washing out, is easily used via your Automatic in-camera menu, and sits high enough to not leave a shadow with larger lenses. Perfect. It does take a little time to power up, but you can adjust that via the menu, and it becomes pretty reasonable after you do. This shot above was taken on the first day I used it... simply a fill flash for a wedding reception.

I tried the Metz of similar description and returned it. Im using this for fill flash on a Z6. Works very effectively is really small which is ideal and fit in my travel kit perfectly. Beautiful even light spread as one would expect from Nikon.

This makes a night and day difference when shooting indoors. Aim it at the ceiling instead of at your subject for perfect indoor fill lighting 99% of the time. A great, inexpensive external flash for laymen photographers like me who tend to just shoot on Auto all the time.
