Good projector but cheap for the price

The size of the projector is fantastically small, but the cables to go with it are massive and awkward. It only takes a mini hdmi cable, so that you are obliged to buy adapters and other cables. It does not have a speaker. It does not have a battery, so that it must be plugged in to a wall socket or a power bank, which adds more equipment and complication. The focus control is very unhelpful. It does not have wifi. I was very disappointed, especially given the price.

Could not be more pleased with this device. It is little gems like this, make me look good, as a Systems Administrator. It was listed in a top 10 list of portable projectors. Tied for best and 2nd cheapest. No Brainer!

I was so excited to have this little projector. It turned on and I could see the light. However, for me to see what was on my screen, I had to download the PicoPix file which is not available. I do not recommend this product.

Courtesy of the Amazon Vine program, I have received a “Philips PPX4010 Portable LED Pocket Projector with USB, HDMI Connectivity, 120" Video Projection (Silver)” for review. I have had a lot of experience with projectors both in home and office applications, but this is my first experience with pico projectors. (I will follow Philips and call this “PicoPix” below.) The PicoPix comes in a ~4 by ~4 by ~3 inch box. Inside you will find the projector itself, a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable, and a USB to micro-USB cable with a Y power extension (i.e., you can draw power from two USB A ports). Setting up takes no time and everything is plug and play. The projector itself has two controls only: an L/M/H intensity slider, and a rotary focus ring. The moment you plug in the USB cable to an uplink (such as your laptop or a USB power supply or a USB battery pack), the projector turns on. Then you can rotate the focus ring to try to focus. I said “try”, because the focus ring is geared at such a high ratio but with such light friction that it is actually difficult to obtain good focus in practice. This takes half a star off in my book. The three provided intensity levels are very useful, and in a completely dark room the medium intensity is already bright enough at the maximum projection size of 120”, which I tested in my home theatre room. (The L setting, frankly, is so washed out that even in a completely dark room it is quite useless.) However, once there is any light contamination, such as in an office setting, you really need the H setting. Unfortunately there is no other image adjustment on the PicoPix. This may bring a surprise to many users: there is no keystone compensation setting, and so you have to move the projector towards the center of the screen in order for you to not see a trapezium image. In other words, if you put the projector a desk in your office, then you will need to live with the center of the image being at the desk surface level. Fortunately, there is a standard tripod screw hole in the bottom of the projector. So you can actually put the projector anywhere in 3-space. However, note that the included cables are 3 feet in length and this can limit placement. From the perspective of business graphics, which seems to be the targeted market of this PicoPix given the sales graphics, I happily report that most bright PowerPoint presentations will look fine so long as the room is dark enough and you have a way to place the projector to minimize the keystone effect. However, if you are looking for movie nights, the contrast is so low even at the H setting and I cannot recommend it for that application. My 4/5 rating is because I rounded down after taking half a star off due to the difficult-to-operate ring.

The PicoPix 4010 projector is as bright and powerful as many of the larger projectors on the market today. Just two year ago, we only had DLP projectors with lamps that required replacement bulbs every thousand hours. Now there is a powerful solution with 25,000 hours bulb life for under $300. It delivers 854 x 480 resolution, which is 480P- DVD quality. Considerations are that you can only present through the HDMI cable. The USB cable delivers the power, and is not recognized by my PC as a Plug and Play device. If you have a system like Dells proprietary HDMI port, you will need an adapter. It also requires a separate female HDMI to mini-HDMI adapter for cell and tablet projection. For laptops with a standard HDMI port, it is a no-brainer. Just plug in and present. One unexpected benefit is the ability to project a movie in the back of your car while on road trips. Hang a white cloth across the back of the front seats, plug in an AUX audio cable from your device to the sound system, and you have a mini movie screen. Just make sure your rear windows are covered or tinted for best effect. It is only recommended for rooms with low light. If you dont mind lugging around 2-3 lbs of weight, there are higher brightness and higher resolution LED options for less on Amazon. For business travelers who will be presenting in darker rooms, this is a great option.

I have to be honest. I ordered this without really reading through the description. Waiting for it, I was looking for a big heavy box. The postman delivered a padded envelope, and the projector was in it! Smaller than a deck of cards, this little projector is the NEATEST thing I have seen in years. No on/off switch. The picture is HUGE, bright and clear. I wish I had it when I was traveling doing presentation for work! Set up is easy, if you have a laptop with the HDMI mini port. Just plug and go. Power comes via a special cable that uses 2 USB ports on the your laptop (however, the projector will work with just one of the two plugged in.) Now, lest you think that this is the perfect solution, there are a couple drawbacks. First, your laptop must be able to accept the HDMI cord - OR - you have to buy an adaptor, which is what I did with my five year old MacBook. SECONDLY, this projector is not silent - it has fan and you can hear it. THIRD, when you watch a movie, you have to rely on the laptop speakers. Even with all of that I was so gobsmacked by the brilliance of this projector, I LOVE IT. Well worth the money.

Holy Bat Projector Batman! This thing is incredible, it literally weighs practically nothing and fits in the palm of your hand. It provides a crisp, clear picture (no sound) with a surprising amount of color and light, even in a room that is fairly light. I am very impressed with this little gem! It is dead simple to use, simply hook it up and go. It is powered by USB which means your USB battery pack can also run this! (hint hint!) If youre in the market for one to do presentations, this is definitely worthy of your attention.
