I have owned 2 Sony blu rays before I purchased this one. This is the worst blu ray I have ever owned. It takes several minutes to initialize every time you use it. Every 3rd or 4th time I turn the unit on, I get the following message "Connection status cannot be confirmed. A network error has occurred. Do you want to set the internet settings? YES or NO." I then have to go through the process of setting up the wifi on the blu ray. Then once I get it setup, it takes several more minutes to access the particular app I choose. I would not recommend it to anyone.

I have 1100 DVDs and HD-DVDs and no Blu Ray discs, so needless to say, I was very interested in the Sony machine, because it could not only play, but upgrade DVDs to HD and even beyond if the TV was capable of showing it. Upon receipt, it took perhaps 20 minutes to get it on line with my wireless network, and another 5 minutes to download the latest software. I immediately tested the claim to upgrade DVDs by playing one that had turned green on my old player. Not on was the color restored, but the picture was far superior to what it had been before. I still do not own any Blu Ray discs, so I cant speak to that capability, and I also do not have a 4K or 3D TV, so I can address those features. I do, however, have an excellent Samsung 1920 x 1080 LED, 55-inch TV and the picture of the regular DVDs was excellent. Ive saved the best features to the end. I currently use--used--an Apple TV system to stream Netflix and other systems. As one might know, Apple makes it difficult for Amazon Prime Video to stream over their system. Well, this player has the APP for Netflix, Amazon Video, and several others built in. I have not used my Apple TV since I bought this player, because not only does it play what Im interested in--Netflix, Amazon Video, YouTube, etc. but the picture displayed is far superior to that streamed by Apple TV without the fuss that Apple TV requires. Bottom line--this is an excellent machine that does everything it says it will, and in a very small package (about the size of a lined notepad and about 2 inches high. It weighs less than 3 pounds.

Let me start off by saying that I have been a video recording engineer for over 30 years. I am used to broadcast quality Sony products and Sony is a terrific company. I have purchased four of these Blu-ray players from Amazon over the years and each one has died completely with in a year and the last one died within four months. They all start off fine but over time the apps stopped working and the Wi-Fi begins to get worse, and then the unit totally stops working. I know others have given this unit good remarks because it does start off great at the beginning, but save yourself a huge headache and do not buy this unit or any others of a similar model. You will totally regret it! Sony still makes great HDTVs but their Blu-ray players are really bad at this point. Thank you. (Mark).

VERY slow piece of hardware. I try to go to Netflix when it starts up, and it says that its "looking for an internet connection." If I wait another 10-15 seconds, it then starts working. I have also found that it will freeze up while watching content on Amazon Prime Video. Last comment is about the lack of sound output options in the back. Why on earth did they put an analog audio out? Update: Turns out that the reason why it loads so slow, is because it is busy loading ADS. Thats right. It blocks you from using the device, until it finished showing your advertisements...

I have no complaints about the player itself in regards to picture quality and features except for one complaint. PAUSE - Often when watching a movie I will pause the player and make popcorn or use the bathroom. This particular model will only pause for a limited amount of time then it basically shuts off. This would be OK if it remembered where it left off on the disc, but it doesnt. I am forced to reload the disc, go through the previews (when they cant be skipped), get to the menu and pull up the scene selection and attempt to find my place again. Sometimes which scene that is isnt obvious and if I am watching a movie for the first time the scene selection often results in spoilers. I bought this because my old player was giving me problems and it was affordable at a time when money was, not tight exactly but not as flexible as I desired it to be. I will most likely replace with player with a better one soon.

This is a piece of junk. Just after the 30 day return window, unit keeps going to black. And will not go back until I turn it off and on a few times. Maybe! And on the times I had a picture the smart tv keeps going back to home. Click on netflix pick a program back to home over and over. I didnt have it long enough to play a lot of discs. Into the garbage it goes along with my 130 bucks!

Everything was good for about 3-4 months then it started freezing up, wont turn on, wont turn off have to unplug power wire again and again just to get it to work. Basically the same issues the bad reviews are saying I am having the exact issue. Also the sound from this player from day 1 with HDMI cable is so low I need to turn my volume up extremely high just to hear it. If my TV is at volume 15 its loud, using this sony player I need to turn up to 25 just to hear it??? This cant be right. I had to return this to amazon I took a risk buying this and got burned. But thank you amazon for the great customer service as always!

The size of the player is nice. However, like other reviewers have reported, we too frequently are experiencing the entire player locking up. The only solution is too pull out the power cord from the back of the player. We also are very disappointed in the menu software. Whoever in Sony designed the interface greatly lacks an understanding of intuitiveness, simplicity and customer enjoyment (see photo). The menu is very slow, sometimes requiring double-clicks to engage a choice. The photo, video and Miracast options lack up to date features, those found in other non Sony players. Icons in the Featured Apps section cannot be removed or changed. There is no customer oriented justification for force advertising on the main menu. We are perfectly capable on our own to search a master list of app icons and place them on "our" menu. And, I am not interested in being reminded of Sonys Playstation game box every time I use the player. I have seen much better menus in other DVD players. Without hesitation, we do not recommend this player.

My wife purchased this BR player for me for Christmas. I installed in just after Christmas and connected it to my network. About a week later, my network went down - no connectivity on the wired side of my network, but the wireless worked fine. After disconnecting things one at a time, I was able to determine the BR player had locked up and was hammering the network. I unplugged the BR player and the network came back up. This has now happened three times, but my window for returning this POS has now passed. No updates from Sony to help with this issue. Beware purchasing this product. If you do and you have networking problems - you now have the answer - return the BR player within the return window.
