Bought this a few months ago (the wired only version). It usually works well, but every month or so, it gets into a state where the Ethernet interface causes disruptions on our home network (causes it so that no devices can connect). We have to unplug the power cord from the DVD player and plug it back in so that our wired network starts to work again. It plays DVDs fine, but most of the time we use the device to stream Netflix or Amazon Video, so not having network connectivity is almost pointless.

This unit is about as simple as you can get. On the front, there is an EJECT button and a Power on/off button. Thats it. There is no fast forward or fast reverse button. And there is no start/stop button. You must use the remote control for those functions. On the back there is a USB out, an HDMI in, and a Digital out (with RCA connector). The unit itself is very small. It looks tiny sitting next to my surround sound receiver. It provides an excellent Blu Ray picture. The sound is also excellent. No complaints at all.

I figured it was time for me to start streaming shows, but I knew I didnt want to be streaming them onto either my computer or tiny little screens that would give me eyestrain and neckaches. So I gambled on Sony. And it paid off. This is an attractive device that sits unobtrusively under the TV. It hooks by Ethernet directly into your cable modem. Since Ive got it on the main TV and in that little nest of electronic cord knots, that was no issue at all. Its fast loading and the picture is flawless once it gets all buffered. Ive never had it stutter or lose its place, never had a lag. Its like watching HD TV and I cant tell the difference. It runs all my existing DVDs -- my gamble on Sony paid off.

This is the first internet connecting Blue Ray Ive got, and while I am finding that I like the concept, this one isnt great. First, a lot of times it just leaves the disk spinning while you are watching Netflix or Amazon Videos on it for some reason, making it really noisy. Second, Amazon Video tends to stutter and freeze a lot on this. Even if that was because of a bandwidth problem (despite my high speed internet), the whole player freezes up when this is happening. Bandwidth problems shouldnt make me wait 30 seconds for the pause button to register. And, it is low on apps. No ability to watch HBOGo, or Cinemax, or any of the other major movie channel streaming service apps. It has Netflix and Amazon Video which is nice, but besides that it is just 50 junk streaming apps you dont want. So, for streaming you should get a device like this. But not this one.

Only had this a few weeks-will update later. I thought it would come with no wi/fi connection but it did. Has several apps pre-installed and you can add others. I tried them and they worked fine. I really only bought this to play DVDs and it does that fine so far. The remote sometimes lags but eventually works. Pretty good for a refurbished Blu-Ray player, esp. for what I paid.

This Blue Ray Player has started blocking my movies with something called Cinavia that is supposed to block unauthorized copies. I bought the movies new right here on Amazon so they are authorized copies!!! Worse it is not even a Blue Ray Movie! So avoid any Blue Ray Player that has this softwear embedded in it. The Cinavia software will turn a good player into a worthless peice of crap.

I purchased this Sony BDPS-1700 Wired Blu-Ray Disc Player primarily for its capability to display Closed Captioning (CC) on my TVs HDMI inputs when playing my standard DVDs with same CC encoded. I have a significant (to me) collection of British TV series DVDs, some with and some without CC encoding, than I employ to assist me (and husband) in understanding "typical" British accents used by some British actors. This feature is working well for me. This "CC" feature is separate from the "subtitles" feature common to all Blu-Ray players and may be available to other brands. I believe the Sony BDPS- 3500 and 3700 Blu-Ray players have this same CC feature. [ I dont work for Sony or anyone else and Im not devoted to any particular brand]. Some of my other standard DVD collection have DVDs which freeze, pixelate, skip, or just wont play/access portions. I tested a couple DVD sets which have these problems when using my standard DVD players (more than one brand) using this Blu-Ray Disc player and the DVDs played OK. I have not tested all such DVDs in my collection with these problems and dont claim it will work every time. These DVDs played OK when I first bought them, but subsequent playing after considerable time (years) reveals faults not previously encountered. I have not used the player for Blu-Ray discs or for streaming.

Presents a great picture when used in combination with a decent television. It is very easy to navigate the homescreen and add/remove apps to your favorites bar. The only downside has been it takes a while to find WiFi signal when I first turn it on sometimes. Its possibly my own setup, because I didnt realize this didnt have a WiFi adapter and am having to use a secondary adapter to receive signal and then hardwire it into this Blu-Ray Player.

I bought this as a replacement for a BDPS1500 (which stopped working completely). Well, this BDPS1700 worked fine for a couple disc-plays and a couple Netflix plays. Then I moved it from one room to another (yes, I followed the proper power disconnect procedure). When I plugged it in, it powered up and connected with the second TV, but would not produce a menu. It would not respond to the remote. It would not respond to the manual eject button. It would not power down with the manual power button. So I read the "manual" that came with it, but it did not reveal any troubleshooting tips that helped. So I went on line and read many many user reviews, blogs, etc., looking for hints to a secret "unlock" command. I tried several suggested combinations to no avail. I also went to the Sony product support site for this specific model, but it as well had no help for the problem. The suggested reset procedure did not work. And I considered the software update route, but could not do that with the unit being totally unresponsive. Conclusion: player rendered useless. Fortunately I did not have a disc left in the unit. So......... I returned it to Amazon for refund and went shopping to another manufacturer. I used to think that Sony had good products, but this family of basic blu-ray players must be the exception.

I bought this Sony DVD Player in 2016, see my pictures, and today I found it bricked and totally unresponsive. Now when plugged into an AC Outlet, the green power light comes then I hear the motor run briefly and then there is a simple thump sound. After that, nothing more happens and the only change comes when it’s unplugged from power, then it does the same thing when plugged in again. Since Sony does automatic updates to this product that I cannot opt out of, I suspect the DVD player received a faulty update that was not received well and bricked maybe during the night or really anytime. I don’t expect Sony to fess up to the loss and send replacements even though they know where their serial numbers go they just expect to sell more DVD players when this happens. Yes it’s a hazard of the update process that I can’t opt out of because no option on updates is offered by Sony. Now I have a worthless Sony product. Thanks Sony. I’ll never buy another Sony product. I recommend that readers of this review do the same and buy something else.
