This player advertises that its wi-fi/ethernet compatible. While it is, the software driving the system was obviously rushed to release this player. Every time it attempts to connect to the internet, it has to go through a 3-step process to verify the internet connection, and you have to "OK" it once it completes... Why wasnt this designed to happen in the background? Minor, I know, but it just reeks of Sony rushing and not properly coding software for it. Another con, in my opinion is it will always auto-play when a DVD is in it and you power it up (with no way -- that I can seem to find -- to disable this). If I dont know that my wife has left one of her Yoga DVDs in the thing, and I power it up, theres no way to stop it from auto-playing, except getting up to eject the damn DVD... Sure, I could wait til it reads the DVD and eject it when you get to the main menu, but too many times, DVDs are coded to block use of any controls via the remote until its gone thru all of its initial FBI warning/preview crappola. Yeah, I know I sound lazy, but it sucks if youre all comfortable on the sofa (with the dog in your lap) and you have to get up to manually eject the damn DVD! To the worst part... At least a dozen times since weve bought the thing, its just flat-out locked up on us -- for both DVD playback or trying to stream content. Nothing short of unplugging it (and leaving it unplugged for a minute or so) will reset it. To add insult to injury here, Ive got all of the wiring for our entertainment center meticulously organized, out of sight BEHIND a huge wardrobe-style cabinet. I had to physically move that beast to get to the power strip. In my laziness, Ive even gone as far as to trip the breaker that that outlet is on to avoid moving that damn cabinet (only to realize I then had to reset several digital clocks). Ive since moved the power strip to the floor, and I can now CRAWL to it to unplug the player. OK, Ive ranted enough... The thing is, when it DOES work, its a decent player. 3D is great, and it works relatively well in streaming Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Pandora, etc. It also integrates pretty well (after a bit of troubleshooting) with our networked PCs in the house to access other media. Id just really appreciate a software update thatd eliminate some of the issues were having. Recommend it? Maybe now. if you can find it on Craigslist, or used here for $30. EDIT: 6/25/2015 - Horrible DLNA streaming receiver... I would avoid it, altogether now! Damn thing says it functions as a DLNA streaming device for content on your Windows network. Uh... Its intermittent at best. The list of supported media formats ([...]), says that it is compatible with .mp4 encoded media. "Cool!" I thought. So I went to ripping all of my standard DVDs to mp4 (using "MakeMKV" to decrypt them, and "HandBrake" -- a well-received transcoding product), saving them to my Windows system and streaming them via Windows Media Server. Well, first of all the player recognizes ONE of the seven mp4s I generated (and I decrypted/encoded all 7 the same way). All others are labeled as "corrupt or unsupported". WTF? Especially when the same mp4s play fine directly in Windows. I thought maybe Windows media Server and the Sony didnt jive, so I tried copying all of the mp4s directly to an external USB drive -- which is also SUPPOSEDLY supported. Plugged it in to the player, and the directory structure is there, but each folder says No available content". Not to be defeated (Im pretty stubborn, as I m sure you can tell), I took it a step further and found a great DLNA Server software -- "Mezzmo". I *THOUGHT* it had solved all of my problems... All I had to do was decrypt each DVD to the external drive as .mkv files and Mezzmo would take care of the necessary transcoding, on-the-fly, as I queued up a movie on the Blu-ray player. IT WORKED! Well... sort of. A few of the movies stutter and just completely hang during playback. OK, theyre just bad decrypts, right? NOPE... I figured out how to set up my Roku 3 via Mezzmo to stream videos to a separate TV (using Roku Media Center). EVERY. SINGLE. VIDEO. WORKS. JUST. FINE... This applies to BOTH videos Id already ripped to mp4 (that arent recognized on the Sony), and videos that are transcoded by Mezzmo -- EVEN the ones that stuttered on the Sony! So, I guess Im going to look into another Roku 3 to stream content to our main TV, and (I GUESS) keep the Sony for Blu-Ray disc playback, only... What a waste! Bottom line... HORRIBLE software on this device. Cant believe a name like SONY would put out such a sub-par product!

I did a lot of research before buying this particular product. This is the best as of writing this review. The research also involved returning 3 other Blu ray players (Panasonic, LG and Toshiba). I was looking for a blu-ray player that has a built in Wifi, could stream Youtube, Netflix, Pandora and Hulu+. Needed DLNA as well. 3D was a nice to have feature as i was going to connect it to a non-3D projector. I also needed an audio out option other than HDMI to connect to a sound bar. All under $100. Toshiba one was just nasty. Kept on dropping signals and had a very slow boot. Though it was 30 bucks cheaper (refurbished), it was not worth it. LG was nice but I already had all the streaming features it had on my LG TV so wanted to add some variety. Also, it did not have 3D for the same price. Other issue was the manu navigation which lagged a little. Panasonic was good too and had very good navigation but again was lacking 3D for the same price. The deal breaker was the wifi signal though which kept on dropping after 20-30 minutes of streaming. Sony stood out to be the best. Cons; Not really a Con but I wish they could make it a tad smaller in physical size. The plastic seems a bit cheap.... but it is very acceptable for the price Pros; Best navigation System out there.Very easy and intuitive. Also, very fast. Its very similar to PS3s menu system. Very fast boot. No wifi dropped signals Crystal clear picture quality (the competitors were the same though). Had all the features i required and had 3D as well. Supports BD live and has 2 (front and rear) USB outlets Has option for composite audio/video and optical sound along with HDMI The app collection is the best i have seen in the lot. I did not see any app missing! I made the mistake of buying a Roku for almost the same price..... thankfully I sold it on craigslist for the price and invested in this blu-ray. This is as good as any streaming device out there and plays blu-ray in 3D! Very good value.

We have been waiting on the blu-ray craze until prices settled down, and now with many players also including streaming in their functions, it seemed like a good time to buy. We bought this from Amazon for just over $100 and have been EXTREMELY pleased with the product. Shipping -- it came from Amazon, nuff said. It got here fast and safe. Setup -- Once I had the machine connected to the TV and power outlets, which took about 5-10 minutes including getting the machine out of the box, it took another 7-10 minutes to get the player connected to our wifi so we could view Netflix movies. Setup was extremely simple, although it is helpful if you do a quick review on how to use the remote. The only thing that might be tricky is that its not always simple to tell what "choice" you are getting ready to make. When the machine highlights a selection prior to you pushing the "enter" button, it turns the background white, but sometimes its not that evident at the beginning. The only other thing about the setup is to be sure that you have your computer on as well. (we can have our wifi on and the computer off at the same time) Youll need to visit a website to confirm the connection, but its not a big deal. Quality -- never having had a blu-ray player before, Im extremely happy with the quality of our movies -- both those that are blu-rays and just regular DVDs. The other night, my wife put the "Cars" movie in for the kids to watch. It was amazing to see the difference in the picture quality. We are using an HDMI cable. But instead of paying a crazy price at an electronics store, I found one on Amazon for less than $2 -- it is doing the job beautifully! In addition to the quality of the blu-ray, the Netflix movies which are streamed over the wifi at a distance of roughly 10 feet, going around a short corner and through some glass, are fantastic. Frankly, the Netflix quality is better on the TV (through the wifi) than it is directly on the computer monitor through an ethernet cable. Ive also tested it using YOUTube and it worked fine as well. Ease of use -- very simple. It takes a little getting used to as a home menu pops up most of the time even when you put a movie in, but its pretty simple to select your entertainment choice and go from there. Netflix can be just a little cumbersome if you are searching for a specific movie and need to enter the title. You have to scroll for each individual letter of the title, but its really not that big of a deal. Our 7-year-old can operate the machine for anything with no help at all. Cost -- I searched around and this model had some of the best reviews and as I mentioned -- the cost was very reasonable on Amazon. Its always tough with electronics because the minute you buy something, a newer version has hit the stores. However, Im hoping well have this for several years. Size -- just a note, this machine is quite small. Not near as deep as many DVD players weve had in the past and not very wide. I would highly recommend the machine to anyone who is getting into blu-rays and also is interested in internet streaming.

This unit stopped working after only two years. It connects to the internet (netflix) but it doesnt play discs at all. The warranty is only 1 year, and because we are outside of that Sony is totally unable or unwilling to do anything for me. A blu ray player should work more than 2 years! They gave me numbers for local repair shops that dont repair blu-ray players, and the only solution they offered me was shipping it to one of their repair centers, however they couldnt even tell me how much it would cost! When I pressed them for an answer on that (because they kept saying "take it to a local repair shop" and I kept answering "they wont repair blu ray players!" they told me the estimate was $50. It costs $60 to get a pretty nice new Samsung blu ray player. I am really disappointed in Sonys product quality as well as their customer service and I wont go out of my way to buy Sony again.

This item was off to a great start. The interface is the same as the PSP, so I was somewhat used to it. I used it for viewing blurays, which it did very well for the few that I viewed, as well as for Netflix and Amazon videos. I actually preferred to use this item for videos because my TiVo has me wait to download Amazon videos and the Netflix quality was much better. I used the WiFi feature of the player, and never had a problem with a lost connection or slow connection (cant say the same of my other streaming-capable items). However, about two months after I had the unit (which I used maybe once a week) it suddenly would not turn on. I unplugged it and plugged it back and it would then turn on. Gradually, I would have to unplug it more often before it would finally turn on. Now three months later and the thing wont turn on at all, no matter how many times I plug and unplug it. From what Ive read this is a known issue, and because I was out of return options with Amazon (and I stupidly did not buy a Square Trade warranty for this, thought it wouldnt matter much because Square Trade requires you to go through the product warranty first) I contacted Sony support via their website. The forms were easy to fill out and apparently it is a known defect because they sent me almost right away to the return item page. However, I am very upset that I have to pay for the shipping to their repair center! This is a manufacturing defect and I have to pay for their bad quality item. In the past I would always try to buy Sony items knowing their reputation, but apparently that reputation is no longer deserved. It may be just this one item that was a dud, but I dont think I will be purchasing from Sony again. I have a Samsung bluray player (not 3D) that is over two years old and is still working like new. Save yourself the trouble and buy another player with a better reputation if you can. UPDATE: I tracked the item that I sent to Sony for repair and found their website said they didnt receive it. When I tracked via the post office, it had been delivered on 1/14. I emailed them and was told that it would not update as having been received until a technician started working on it. On 1/18, I opened my front door and there was a large box sitting on my stoop. Inside was a refurbished unit that had been sent out on 1/15. They must have a stack of these waiting for the duds that are returned to them. So I hook that up and it turns on for about five seconds then dies. The same problem I had before. I tried it in various power strips and outlets around my house and the same thing happened. I tried Sonys "live chat" option; after telling the person that the unit wouldnt turn on he asked me what error the drive was giving me. That upset me a bit so I again said that it just wouldnt turn on. Then he tells me to "turn the unit ON." At that point I called him an idiot and disconnected the chat. I then called Sonys customer relations phone number, and spoke with someone who said they would do a replacement on the dud. Then, he tells me that I have to pay to ship it back to them again. At that point I almost started yelling at him that I was not going to pay another $20 to ship their second defective unit, and he kindly transferred me to the repair center, where the rep there emailed me a label to ship it back prepaid. Think carefully before buying from Sony and having to deal with their product support, its not worth it in the end. I took off another star for this ridiculous process that Sony has to repair their own lemons. Hopefully player #3 will work as advertised, though I dont have much hope of that.

Bought this item on June 28, 2012. It seemed flimsy and cheap right from the start, but at least it worked (although the wifi connection was spotty, and the boot up time is absurdly slow) A few months later, had major difficulties in which its color would not work after plugging my iPad into a (separate) HDMI on my Denon unit. This may or may not be the fault of the Sony blu-ray player, but it has occurred EVERY time an additional HDMI port is used -- the Sony stops working (nothing else does), and has problems displaying correct colors, etc. I had to factory reboot it at that time to get it to work (and Ive never plugged in a phone or tablet since, because it was such a pain) Now, just BARELY over 1 year later, the DVD/BD drive suddenly wont open; it just says "D ON" whenever the eject button is pressed. There is no logical reason why this would have suddenly happened. The only info I can find about this is, in the manual, it says if you see "D ON", "contact your local Sony dealer or authorized service center" Went to the Sony online support site and, conveniently enough, it is out of warranty; cost to repair or get a replacement? $103.52. This is almost as much as the cost of original purchase (and I dont understand why the price of this device has gone UP on Amazon over the past year. Arent electronics supposed to get cheaper with age?? This one certainly should have...) What a heap of garbage. I absolutely regret ever buying this thing. The only non-disc features I ever used on it anyway were Netflix, and occasionally Pandora...

I have been using this blu-ray player for two months. First it is very easy to set the S590 up and get it connected to your HDTV and receiver etc. And contrary to what some of the other reviewers complained about, the wireless connection is also very self-explanatory. The wizard will guide you through the process and even search the corresponding Security Type of your wireless network for you and all you need to do is type in the password--all should be done within three minutes. Now about the function and feature of this blu-ray dvd player, I can tell you one thing upfront: since the first day I introduced it to my home theatre system, Ive been buying all kinds of blu-ray movies just so I can continue enjoying the pleasure I have from watching movies on this player. Nice video and sound quality. On a side note, I use some cheap hdmi cord (slower transfer rate) I bought online to connect the devices. But it didnt stop the S590 from delivering excellent and consistent movie experience. That being said, I havent tried watching any 3D movies on S590 as I am waiting to see the results of the current 3D TV technology race; prices are changing all the time. So how about the apps? So far I have used Netflix, HuluPlus, Cinemanow, VuDu, and Amazon Prime--all without an issue. It also comes with tons of other apps that not only bring you movie experience, but also music, concert, news, fashion, and exercise programs. For those who complained about the loading time being "so long", I suspect they might suffer from symptoms of general anxiety disorder (life now is sressful for most of us), that there are some big stressors in their life that make the few seconds it takes for the player to connect to the internet and load into the app interface unbearable. The appearance and outer design stays true to the pictures you see. It has this sleek look yet it can easily blend into any settings (unlike anything Apple have made). Although the player does employ cheap plastic(I would prefer the word "lightweight"), the top of the player is rendered matt and textured that it doesnt look cheap--like the other devices that have glossy black surface do. However, being lightweight has its downside, apart from being labeled "not sturdy", it emits a discernible buzzing sound if and only if you leave a disc in the tray AND you dont position the player right--that it somehow resonates with your TV set at a bad frequency. Aside from the fact that the buzz it makes when its not properly positioned is nothing compared to that of the fans of your computer and you can only hear it in a quiet room when nothing is played on the screen, you will not hear a thing from the machine while watching movies online using the players apps (and there is no disc in the tray) no matter how--its "dead silent". Before I actually bought the S590, I also came across a review here that complained about the control buttons (Play,Stop,Eject,etc.) not being located in the front where the display screen is----the controls of this model are laid on the near rim of the top of the player. But in my opinion, its a major improvement in terms of outer design: its more ergonomic when it comes to pushing the buttons(Bend vs.Full Squat) and it adds to the integrity of the player as a whole. I will end the review here on one last note: my mother is having quite a lot fun too with the player, as she pulled out some aerobics video on Youtube and exercised in front of the TV everyday.

I had SONY products going back to Trinitron TVs and Walkmans - but boy, they have changed! I bought this BR player with WiFi for DVD-BD playback and (importantly) for streaming Amazon Instant, Hulu and others. The units remote was already a pain to search titles etc., but I could make do. Easily the worst-designed remote Ive used in the last 10 years or so. I would have still given the player maybe 3 stars at that stage. A while ago ago, Sony "provided" a software update for the player, converting a mediocre machine into a unusable piece of junk. Ever since that update, the player freezes up for several minutes at a time after 6-8 key strokes/interactions on its remote, - try searching for a title with that "special" feature! Over the last ~ 10 weeks since this happened, I rebooted the unit (disconnected from power) umpteen times, and have looked for another update about once a week, hoping they would recognize and fix the damage the did. Result every time: "already updated". The player is now sitting in a box with assorted electronics junk - I wont even sell this on eBay or similar - Id be too ashamed if anybody bought it. If somebody with the same or similar experience wants to start a class-action lawsuit against Sony damaging their customers property by "updating" their software, let me know - Im game to join! One outcome of Sony obsoleting (damaging) my player: I bought a new phone recently, and this experience convinced me not to buy an Experia Z - good looking phone, nice specs, but its a SONY - so, how long before they "update" [brick] it for you? Probably right after the warranty expires! Buyer, beware and stay away from SONY products.

Had been looking for a good quality 3d Blu-ray player and found it in this unit. I currently do not have a 3d TV but wanted to have that ability when I upgrade my TV this year. From opening the box to streaming a video via Amazon Prime and Hulu+ took less than 30 minutes. I have mine hardwired via Cat5e cable to my router, but also tried the wireless connection and it worked just fine as well. It is a 2.4Ghz so some other electronics (microwaves) might interfer with it, but not an issue with being hardwired. Registration of the unit took all of a couple minutes, registering on Amazon Prime took an extra minute. I didnt reaize there was a second registration code generated just for AP, that was my fault. Additional features Im looking foward to are using the USB port and ability to stream music from my home computer. Playback is great, I have a 42" LCD 1080p TV, Blu-Ray play is great, standard DVDs work as well. There are apps, which Im on the fence about, but could be fun for mild entertainment "geo quiz" and other fun stuff. Lots of apps for streaming beyond Hulu+ and AP, some I had no idea existed. Sony Entertainment Network might be something to look into, I like to stream music, SEN has unlimited music/video, but havent looked to the price yet. There is a Pandora app and others, but I use I <3 Radio now, might have to get a Pandora account again. The only issue I had was with the mobile "Media Remote" app, claiming to use your smartphone/tablet/etc. I could not get my HTC Inspire to register with the unit (both hardwired and wireless connections on the BDP) So not sure of the issue. Its not a big deal, I wanted it mostly so I could use a "keyboard" app when typing in searches, etc. There is a Facebook app as well, that will be nice to explore once I get a "keyboard" to connect. Id recommend going online to add movies to your queue as the search functions for apps like AP and Hulu+ require you to type in full words/names of the movies and you have to use the number pad i.e. 1 = a b c 1, 2 = d e f 2, so thats kind of time consuming, thus a keyboard widget would be great. Aside for that I am very pleased with the unit and the value at this price.

Ive had this Sony Blu-Ray player for about 2 months, and so far I really love it. This was purchased to replace an LG Blu-Ray player purchased in 2009. The LG player occasionally had some hiccoughs when playing DVDs, and while it streamed Netflix it couldnt stream Amazon Prime. So when upgrading, I really wanted a Blu-Ray player that consistently had high-quality playback, and that was also capable of streaming not just Netflix and Amazon Prime, but whatever new streaming technologies come out later down the line. This Blu-Ray player met all my expectations and more. The streaming is spot on, the user interface isnt complicated, Blu-Ray and DVD playback are both excellent, and there are no compatibility issues with my RCA LED HDTV. So why the 4-star review, when this really meets all my needs and exceeds my expectations? Because Sony, in typical Sony fashion, needlessly complicates things with its proprietary approach to the user interface. Instead of simply registering the device and enabling it with each of the respective streaming and other applications, you must first register for a Sony account. In fact, you cant connect to the Internet without first registering for a Sony account. This, to me, is ridiculous. Not to mention, every time I use one of the streaming apps, it is very clear that the device is first checking in with Sony. Just what information is Sony collecting from or about me? Im not a fan of this, at all. Unfortunately, other manufacturers are also moving in this direction. Overall, highly recommended--if youre willing to deal with Sonys registration process.
