Install Flash Player I purchased this printer for a small office and had high hopes that it would scan documents and make quick copies for us. The problem I have run into is that it wont scan/copy a document through the feed tray. The paper jams inside the feed tray every time. Not once has it made it the entire way through. Unfortunately for me. I procrastinated in setting the item up so I am outside of the return window. I would never recommend this $479 piece of junk to anyone! DONT BUY! RUN!

This was purchased to replace an aging LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP that stopped working due to scanning bulb failure, after providing almost 5 years of reliable service. That being said, this is my 7th HP LaserJet over the years (4 black and 3 color) and like all the others, this model doesnt disappoint. Unpacking this MFP and setting up the hardware could not be easier. After taking the printer from the shipping carton, remove pieces of packing tape from a few plastic panels and the screen protector, attach the power and network cables, add paper and youre ready to go. There isnt any need to pull out the toner cartridge drawer or even remove protective strips from the 4 toner cartridges. However, as others have cautioned in the reviews here (and elsewhere for the fnw and fdw variants), there is a plastic strip affixed to the far left side of the scanning glass that must not be removed. Software installation is a snap using the Easy Start utility available as a download from the HP website. It took around 30 minutes to install this MFP for three Apple iMacs (running OS X 10.11 and higher), including the download time for the drivers and associated utilities. (I really dont understand why others have mentioned that the software installation is problematic.) This MFP unit weighs in at a somewhat hefty 51.2 lb, although it is reasonably compact (16.4 in. W x 18.6 in. D x 15.7 in. H) for its print / copy / scan / fax / email functionality. The rated engine speed (28 ppm letter size, black and color) seems accurate, as does the first page out (ready) times: 8.9 seconds for black and 9.8 seconds for color, although it does seem to be much faster. Print quality is extremely good for both text and graphics (black and color), as is output from the scanner. Noise levels are very low when operating, whisper-quiet when in standby (ready) mode, and absolutely silent when the machine enters the sleep state. The 4.3 in. touchscreen color graphic display (CGD) is intuitive and easy to use; no user manual required. The printer settings may also be changed via the embedded web server utility (See first two photos below.), as an alternative to using the printer CGD. Whats really nice is that this utility allows you to configure other items not available in the control panel, such as the color calibration timing intervals and power-on calibration (including disabling this if desired). On the other hand, the embedded web server lacks other advanced features as for higher-end HP color lasers, such as the LaserJet Enterprise 500 Series printers. Some examples: (1) User access is unrestricted as there is no password protection, and (2) There isnt a setting to restrict color output (i.e. for some computer applications and/or by user or group permissions). A word of caution... be sure to enter the primary and secondary DNS addresses (IPv4) if you configure the M477fdn manually with a static IP address. Otherwise, the machine will not be able to access the Internet and the HP ePrint feature will not be available. Please refer to other photos for overall view, control panel, pull down Tray 1 and toner cartridge / drawer assembly. You cant go wrong with this HP MFP model, since it has just about everything (except native 802.11 WiFi capability). Highly recommended.

For years Ive always used brother printers and when I purchased their most recent model, which started to smear toner, Brother could not fix the issue despite replacing various parts, so I decided to send it back and try HP for a change. Wow, was I blown away by how much more advanced the HP is compared to one of the top model brother MFCs I sent back (MFC-L8600CDW). This HP Printer makes Brother look like their stuck in the early 2000s for the following reasons: 1. HP Starts up MUCH faster and prints faster. 2. The DPI on HP is much finer, smoother and more detailed. Brother is grainy, even on higher DPI setting. 3. This printer is smaller and quieter than the brother. 4. The LCD on the HP is like a little iPad, good quality graphics, very responsive, intuitive menus, beautifully done. Brothers LCD is grainy, outdated graphics, doesnt always respond to touch, and has more confusing menus. 5. Overall build quality feels more solid and tighter tolerances during assembly, unlike the flimsy/cheap assembly feel of Brother. 6. Wireless connection is super fast to find WIFI (literally 2 seconds to show a list of all found networks), super fast to connect, and very responsive to print (literally 2 seconds after I press print on computer for a word document, the printer starts). 7. Very intelligent menu for toner life (shows you amount of pages printed for EACH cartridge individually, % of toner left, how many pages are left, Serial # of each cartridge and even when it was installed!) 8. It looks more high-tech and advanced than Brothers Big Bulk Black box. The only cons I have this this HP where Brother outperformed: 1. This HP models seems to have a small defect with the scanning element on the flatbed, its installed about 0.4 degrees off making scans come out a bit crooked (see my photo). This is easily remedied by the "Straighten" function in HP Easy Scan app, nevertheless, its a defect and is a nuisance. I even ordered another brand new HP printer like this to see if I had a dud, and they all appear to have this defective offset. 2. Makes weird rubbing noise when scanning through ADF. 3. Does not have spring loaded latches allowing the top lid to raise and adjust when scanning books or thicker documents. 4. The customer service is horrendous. Long wait times (live chat said Im 1st in Cue and 2 minute wait, 15 minutes later it finally connects to an agent who takes another 10 minutes to respond). When I called by phone, a totally unprofessional person responded who sounded like she didnt want to be bothered. No real solutions, no rating system for employees, hence, they dont even bother trying to do good. I absolutely recommend this printer if you dont mind the cons, its the best MFCs for small business and home use on the market currently for the price.

I have worked with many printers, several of them fairly expensive. So far this one has exceeded my expectations. The only thing I havent figured out is how to scan from the printer using the adf. but I havent looked in the computer software just the printer menus which are nicely organized and easy to use. You can tell it to over ride the manufacturer ink checks and everything although I probably wont use aftermarket ink at least for a few years because I have had issues in the past with a brother. The prints are great and the print time is very fast, by the time i can get out of my chair a single page or two has printed. No more counting to 10 before it starts to print. I highly recommend. I use the adf to scan from the scan software that came with the computer no problem and it is very easy to use also. I rely on real opinions for all my shopping on Amazon. If this review helped please click yes below and thanks you for taking time to read my review!

I had a cheap HP inkjet all-in-one that had serious issues with going into standby and never waking back up and required disconnecting and reconnecting power to resolve the issue, until it happened again, and again. I was a bit apprehensive after ordering this printer/scanner and reading that others also seem to have issues with standby. However, up until now, after about 3-4 months of use, this system has worked flawlessly. Some of the issues I noticed mentioned by other reviewers: - standby issues: I have not had any issues. I have sleep/standby set to 1 minute and shut down set to 2 hours. The printer is connected using wifi and is always available when issuing print commands. - wifi or networking issues: I use this on wifi, havent tried wired networking. I once had a minor issue when the printer first got its IP address and at the same time a laptop resumed from standby and had previously been using the same IP address. There was a short conflict. I guess if this is being used in a network and the printer disappears from the network every now and then that theres an IP address conflict. Ive now setup networking for the printer to use a fixed IP address that falls outside of the pool of dynamic addresses. - scanner sheet feeder alignment: I have to agree, no matter how you position the paper, the scans going through the sheet feeder are not perfectly aligned but theyre not severely misaligned. Definitely something that can be improved upon but otherwise not a huge nuisance, especially since I can get straight scans from the flatbed scanner. - scanner resolution: Scans going through the sheet feeder are limited to 300 dpi or lower. Flatbed scans go as high as 1200 dpi. - straightness of printed lines: Read some reviews that had issues with the straightness of what are supposed to be straight lines. I have not noticed this. Moreover, when I first got the printer I printed some mechanical templates that include a printout of a ruler. I used an actual ruler and measured the printed ruler and its spot on. The scanner works well. Printer paper feeding and input tray work as one would expect. Double sided prints look good. Color prints look nice, not as nice as a good inkjet printer but I didnt get this to print color photos, although the occasional color photo I print does look decent. My only regret is that I didnt buy a printer capable of printing on larger paper (like A3), but I would probably not have wanted to pay much more for such a feature. I have not tried the fax option. Not sure how that works these days or who I would exchange faxes with.

This is a nice MFP but it really should come with the 500 sheet second paper tray standard. Instead its an option and you cant find it on amazon. Took a while to search one out. If you want one, try blue dog ink dot com. Its a CF404A (HPs part number).

Even though its amazon description says it has the double sided printing feature, they do not specify that its manual and not automatic. Who wants to print and have to manually flip the paper?? This model # is M477fnw. Apparently the one we need is M477fdw. Now I cant return the printer via amazon since it took me longer than 2 months to set up and troubleshoot. Its frustrating.

Im really ticked off. I purchased this printer for speed and double sided printing. It was replacing my Epson all in one which printed double sided. I received the printer today and spent 2+ hours getting it set up. Then sent a two page document to it and told it to print 2 sided. It printed the first page and then showed the messaged attached. "Manual Duplex". The screen then showed how to take the paper out of the output tray and insert it just right into the input tray. I checked the print menu to see if I made the wrong choice. I did it again - same result. The ad said "2-sided printing" just like the higher end models. It didnt mention anything about "manual" 2 sided printing. All printers will print "manual double sided". I checked the ads for the higher end HP laser printers. Their wording was exactly the same. I now have to repackage this 52 pound beast, return it and try to find a printer that does what I want. Im Very Very Unhappy - Disappointed

When I first got this printer, I didnt have any of the issues that I see people having in these reviews. I didnt expect that I would because I know how to set up computer related things. 4 months after I got the printer, I went to print a pdf file and walked away. The printer had an error and ended up printing a single line of garbled text on every other paper until it emptied a full tray. I sorted out the blanks and tried again after turning off the printer to reset it. It did the same thing, but this time I noticed the error message on my computer screen. It just says that there was an error sending the document to the printer. For some reason, however, it places the error to be printed into the print queue and runs me out of paper. I thought it was a problem with the document, not the printer. I was wrong. Now, for example, I can only print a single copy of my resume in one try. If I try to print 2 copies, it will run me out of paper and print only the first copy of my resume. In my world, I spent big money on this printer. I am very disappointed. It seems to have a memory issue and I dont think that I should absorb the cost of that. Theres something wrong here and Im also seeing it in the reviews of other people having major issues after only a few months of use. It took 5 years of lobbying my wife for a wireless color laser printer. I finally get the go ahead, and 6 months later, I already want another one...one that works.

I bought this to replace an Epson WF3640 Inkjet all-in-one and a Canon MF4770 laser all-in-one. While both of those were surprisingly finicky to use (the Canon being worse), once this printer is setup, it is excellent. If there were half stars Id give it 4.5 because there were two annoying things to get right with the setup that really should be unnecessary. The first is that this unit arrived producing scans that were slightly crooked. After reading about this problem on the internet, I found the menu where I could check a box correcting crooked scans. Duh - why isnt this a default? The second is that the default when it arrived was not full duplex printing. Instead, the printer prompted me to manually duplex. Once again fixing this involved an internet search and another checked box in a hidden menu. Otherwise, once it is setup, the unit prints beautifully, quickly, and is easy to use. I highly recommend this unit.
