Just received my Brother MFC-L5900DW Laser printer. Super easy to install. 1. Took it out of Box 2. Remove packaging material around toner, and installed it. 3. Plugged it in. 4. LCD window came on, connected to WiFi 5. Install Brothers driver and software 6. BINGO All took 20 minutes. I used Brother MFC 8460 N for 8 years. Was a work horse and finally gave out. After a month I will update this review.

I purchased the Brother MFC L5900DW Printer for my home office. This is a large business class printer, which has a large current draw. My home office is on a 15 amp circuit in our new home with AFCI circuit breakers (AFCI circuit breakers are required by code in new homes since 2008 - in most states. The AFCI circuit breakers look like regular circuit breakers except that they have a test button and trip with current surges, for safety.) I tried to unplug everything else on the circuit, updated the firmware and had an electrician check the circuit breaker. The printer would trip the circuit breaker after printing one or 2 pages. I tried to call Brother customer service and tech support but could not get through. I called Amazon, who was unable to get in touch with a the proper person at Brother. I was replacing an great Brother MFC printer , which lasted for 6 years. Maybe the MFC L-5900DW is a great printer but Ill never know. I CAN NOT RECOMMEND THE Brother MFC L5900DW for use in a home with AFCI circuit breakers. I was not able to get any support from Brother but thanks to AMAZON I was able to return the printer and purchase a different laser printer from Amazon.

I bought 2 models MFCL5900DW, one for me and one for my daughter in another state. From the start the first printed page was "dirty" especially at the top. I have called Brother 5 or 6 times. The toner cartridge has been replaced 3 times and the drum once. I have gone through numerous exercises such as cleaning the drum with an alcohol swab and wiping off the toner roller. These solved the problem only temporarily. I still have dirty fist and second pages. My Amazon 30 day return is up as is my 90 day Brother consumables warranty. My daughter is having the same problem. I cannot recommend this printer. I will probably give it away and switch to another brand. If I could return it, I would in a heart beat.

Like it so far after using it for about 2 months. No major problems, but the feeder never runs the pages through the scanner straight. Every page is slightly slanted on scanning or copying if using the document feeder. There are often two vertical black lines through scanned pages when using the document feeder. The document feeder will occasionally get a page so slanted that it will damage the edge of the page. Print quality is good. Print speed is good. Scanning speed is average.

I have an old HP model, and it used a high-capacity cartridge about once every 4 months before I replaced it with this model. I have to buy a new high-capacity cartridge for this unit about ever 2 months. The touch screen is so sensitive that if I drag a document over the top as I set it on the glass, it can change my copy count from 1 to 999 without me even noticing. My staff has wasted so much paper because it is so easy to brush across the copy count setting and bump it up to some ridiculous number. If you are the type to hit the copy button and turn your back while it runs, we recommend you be extra-careful with this model. Also, the print quality is affected too much by the status of the toner cartridge. When its new, everything comes out crazy dark. So we change the settings. As the toner decreases, we have to keep monkeying with the setting because the print quality changes. Overall, I feel like I have to babysit this thing way too much. The features are GREAT, which is why I opted to replace my old dependable copier. I was hoping to improve efficiency and copy speed. But with these headaches, it hasnt saved me anything in time - and may be costing me more in supplies.

I ordered it. Received it. Set it up. And within 18 hours, I received a self-diagnostic error. Troubleshooting for the error consisted of leaving it on for 15-20 minutes, turning it off and turning it back on. If it doesnt fix the problem, Brothers support states that the device requires service. That is the full extent of the troubleshooting for this particular error. I literally printed a total of two pages before it went defective. Ridiculous.

This is my companys second Brother product, and I continue to be impressed. It prints well, scans quickly, and can handle a heavy daily work load. My only complaint is that it is a bit loud, and the wi-fi connection is slow. But, when your printer is magically printing things from another room, without any cords, you really cant complain. It is a great product and I would recommend it to other business owners (and, in fact, have recommended it to other business owners).

Of the five or so printers Ive purchased in my life, this has been the worst from a software / driver standpoint. Every time I use the printer, I have to run the Windows troubleshooter, and sometimes that doesnt work either (and Im left with a printer that doesnt print). Ive tried everything - reinstalling the driver, calling customer support, uninstalling and reinstalling the printer, and its a headache every time I want to print something. The actual printer is fine, but the consistent setup makes me want to tear my hair out.

Ever since I got this printer its been nothing but an absolute headache. In order to ever have a chance at using it, I have to turn it on and off several times and turn my computer on and off. And only then is it even a possibility that the printer will connect to my computer. It will almost never AirPrint, especially if youre not hovering over it. It doesnt even show up in the network. 99% of the time it shows as offline in the printer settings despite being connected to the internet and showing a strong signal internally. There does not appear to be any setting to keep it awake and at this point Im not sure if the problem is that it goes to sleep immediately or that its just poor network tech. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer, the drivers, the firmware 7-8 times now over a month and it will work immediately following and never in the time afterwards. I have had to resort to using my old, slower Canon printer because at least it works every time I hit the print button. Theres no guessing if its going to actually print or not. Save yourself the money and the frustration.

My previous Brother printer started to foul up when I started using generic toner. I also had trouble with paper jams. With this printer Im using the exact paper recommended by Brother and everything is working fine. Turns out, you shouldnt just throw any paper or toner in your printer. For best results, you need to match your ancillary products to your printer. I use this printer to churn out legal documents and it works like a charm. Unlike the MFC L2740DW, this printer can large loads without breaking a sweat. And the if you set the dpi to 1200 X 1200, the text comes out looking sharp and clean. Will it last longer than 1 year, we shall see. But for now, its a great printer. ONE CAUTION: As with all Brother printers, setting up the wireless to work is a PITA. Despite what the directions say, buy yourself a printer chord and plug it in during the wireless set up. ALSO, this printer will NOT work wirelessly while your VPN is on. So be sure to turn that off during the setup. ONE NICE FEATURE While the printer was plugged into my computer, during setup it automatically determined the correct date and time.
