No auto-detection for input sources, so if youre NOT using VGA, every time your computer shuts off, or the monitor is turned off, when you turn it back on you have to manually change your input back to (in my case) DVI. Its doubly annoying if you have a dual monitor setup, because every time you boot up in the morning you have to change both screens. If youre on VGA, great news, thats the default setting. The picture is nice, but not detecting inputs automatically makes me feel like Im using a monitor from 1995.

I like this monitor enough to own two of them now (bought one in 2014 and another in 2015). It is inexpensive, lightweight (for a wall-mounted multi-monitor rack; Im a developer and I like to have coding screens open along with output screens), and good looking. I havent had any problems with backlight color, bleed, or uneven-ness, so Im pleased overall. However, the monitor I bought in June 2015 has updated firmware thats has an annoying problem. I use an ultra-low power system (Rasberry Pi) on a secondary input (HDMI) for times when I want to look something up or check email without running my workstation. Normally my workstation goes to sleep and all the monitors go to sleep including the Asus VS228 monitors. The newest one, however, detects that there is still something active plugged into HDMI and instead of going to sleep, it switches input to the Pi. This means not only does the monitor stay on instead of going into low power mode, I also have to manually switch it back to DVI mode every time I wake the workstation from sleep. Auto input switching should be an optional feature instead of something we cant change. For now Im back to using the older Asus monitor with the secondary input, and Im trying to get reliable power saving mode working on the Pi, but its still annoying that the monitor doesnt respect the mode it is in. I understand its designed as a feature so that users dont have to switch modes when a new system is turned on or plugged in, but we should be able to turn that off.

This monitor seems to be manufactured by different companies even though they have the same ASUS branding and model number. I ordered two of these monitors and one had the colors spot on with those on my laptop display while the other had washed out colors and reds appeared orange. I couldnt fix the washed out colors with any of the settings provided by the monitor nor manually changing the RGB parameters on the monitor and my NVIDIA settings. I promptly decided I couldnt deal with that and I returned the monitor with the washed out colors and received another one without any hassle. Amazon was great at sending me another monitor as fast as possible without any gimmicks. The two monitors I have now are great and colors are the same. I noted differences between the two monitors with the same model number. I will describe the good monitor first and the bad monitor second. The images will also be in the same order. Packaging 1.) Good: Handle on the packaging box is white. Bad: Handle is black. 2.) Good: Styrofoam protecting front and back of monitor. Bad: Styrofoam protecting top and bottom of monitor. 3.) Good: Quick Start Guide for VS228/VS229/VK228. Bad: Quick start guide for VS228/VS238/VS247 Monitor 1.) Good: Power LED is dark blue and dim. Bad: Power LED is light blue and bright. 2.) Good: Bottom of base is half metal and half plastic Bad: Bottom of base is all metal 3.) Good: Menu is smaller and not that bright Bad: Menu items are bigger and bright 4.) Good: Monitor is physically taller Bad: Monitor is physically shorter 5.) Good: Awesome colors Bad: Washed out colors and reds appear orange 6.) Good: When no signal is present blue screen is a dark blue Bad: Blue screen is a bright blue. 7.) Good: No effect on ASUS logo when turning on monitor Bad: ASUS logo appears from center towards the outside Aside from this small setback, the monitors are perfect for my setup. They have nice colors and work great with anything I throw at them.

This was a gift for my brother who lives just over 600 miles from me. He needed a monitor for his security system as his old one was beginning to fail on him. As a early Christmas gift I decided to order him one through Amazon and chose an Asus monitor. My laptop is an Asus and it has been an excellent, trouble-free computer. My brother tells me this monitor was easy to connect as a replacement to his old one. Asus had provided two cables which came as a surprise to us both since most electronics often come without the much needed assessories. I was told the picture and sound was crystal clear and I could hear how pleased my brother was from the tone of his voice. That brought a smile to my face because when I give a gift, sight unseen, and it turns out to be the perfect gift....well that is worth everything to me. Asus has certainly gained my trust in their products.

After reading the reviews and seeing the product in person I was excited to get this monitor. When i received I was very disappointed as it is very washed out and bright and the settings do nothing to fix it. The bottom of the monitor seems much worse than the top and the color and brightness is uneven. A good example of the issue is the windows task bar at the bottom of the screen should be black, solid black, it is black on my laptop, black on my samsung monitor, on this monitor it is bright grey at best. Read the recent reviews, there appear to be 2 different manufactures making this monitor. I found another reviewer who had the exact information. If you get a box with a black handle and the installation guide is for vs228/vs238/vs247 you have the bad model. Amazon was great and I returned the monitor and they sent me a new one in 2 days! Second monitor- same box with the black handle. Believe it or not this monitor is worse than the first one. I guess I am unlucky as both monitors i received are the black handle boxes and not the white handles. At this point amazon has only given me the option to return for a refund, which i am doing. I am disappointed as the price and rebate were awesome, a friend bought one several months ago and theres is really nice, but these are terrible.

Update - changing to 4 stars - figured out how to make the monitor tilt..I just had to adjust the stand a bit. thank goodness for reviews on YouTube! All of the things that make for a good monitor are here - the picture is actually very good. However 3 stars for not having an adjustable stand. The stand causes the screen to be permanently pitched slightly forward, which is super awkward. To compensate I have the monitor stacked on 3 books, which is also awkward. I think I can fix the problem by mounting it on one of those arms. But thats going to add quite a bit to the cost of the monitor. Still deciding whether to send it back.

Update, ALL THREE DISPLAYS HAVE NOW FAILED within a couple weeks of one another, Downgrading this from 3 star to 1 star. Bought 3 of these displays about 3 years ago. 2 of the 3 displays right after or near the end of warranty coverage began to fail. One was able to be repaired via RMA process, the other cannot be because it expired slightly (1 week) outside the warranty. I wouldnt suggest buying these displays to friends and family despite the high rating and decent reviews.

I purchased this monitor in Feb 2016, its now June 2017 (1 year 4 months). I must have ended up with a slightly different monitor than the other satisfied people who have purchased this ASUS monitor, because the monitor I received is terrible and it hurts my eyes. I tried to tough it out and only use it for a few hours or so every couple of days, typically wearing sunglasses because its tough to look at this thing without eye protection, but I cant handle this monitor anymore. I have experienced more eye fatigue on this monitor than any other monitor or screen Ive ever dealt with. I cant go more than 2 hours looking at this screen before my eyes hurt so bad that I have to stop using the computer. After a year and a half of this, Im chucking this thing. I wish I had returned this monitor early on. Im not sure if I can return it at this point :( NOTE: A buyer who posted a really helpful review "Awesome but beware" sometime before Feb 2016 described that when buying this item, the buyer will receive their monitor from one of two manufacturers; one manufacturer makes the good one, the other makes the crappy one. I definitely got one of the crappy ones.

Its a decent size 1080p screen that costs less than $130, so I cant be too harsh on this display, but the picture quality here is pretty terrible. Firstly, and most annoyingly, any off axis viewing angles are met with warping of colors. So much so in fact that there is no "perfect" angle. No matter how straight on your view to the screen is, at least one part of the screen, begins to discolor slightly. Fortunately, this is made bearable by the fact that this only happens on the very edge of the corners when looking at it straight on. Its also not an extreme discoloration, so Im sure many people who arent used to high quality displays may not even notice it. Still, its there, and if youre like me, its going to really annoy you. Secondly, and maybe even most importantly, the black levels on this screen are tragic. There is no such thing as a dark black on this screen. Instead, all you get is darker grays. What this does, is completely destroy contrast and ruin watching any movie that has a lot of dark blacks in it (The Walking Dead, etc). If youre only going to be using this as part of a work computer, than there is no horrible deed done. But if you plan on using this for any other reason, be aware of the fact that the lack of adequate black levels is going to kill picture quality. Lastly, the overall color accuracy here is not good. Not good at all. When I first connected the monitor, the typical gray gradient that mac users are accustomed to seeing head their finder windows, chrome, and other OS X applications, looked more like a gradient of gray-yellow-red. Ive spent close to thirty minutes trying to get a color temperature on this monitor that is neutral, but I havent been very successful at my aspiration to do so. So, fare warning: if you need a full-HD display that allows you to do work you need to do, and you need one on the cheap, this monitor is probably worth looking at. However, if you want a monitor that is going to look decent WHILE letting you get your work done, I would seriously look elsewhere.

Not sure how to reconcile all the positive reviews with my experience of seeing a dull picture when doing basic office work in Windows 10. Perhaps it looks good for video/game playback but for day-to-day applications, no matter what you do with the settings, the picture quality is severely bad. It is as if the monitor had a layer of dust built in with screens coming across depressingly gloomy. The lack of brightness and color are the only things that pop on this monitor. Other grievances, which on top of the picture quality issues beg the question as to what the people who like this monitor are smoking, are gimmicky/useless scene modes and the menu/buttons which had to have been designed to showcase the Asus dinosaur hardware engineers UI design skills.
