Nano-Edge is great 14" is great 8565U + 16GB is great Immediately after using this computer in the first hour I noticed the trackpad issue. The mouse will jump around and speed up, then freeze for a second, then move again. This repeats constantly and sometimes lasts minutes. If you were doing anything intensive with the mouse, you can forget being able to use this laptop. Games, drawing, even drag and drop are nearly impossible. The computer came installed with Windows 10, sure, but also a TON of other software. I thought that was making this machine slow and I wanted to erase everything down to a simple windows 10 install with nothing more but had issues with the usb boot disk getting to boot from the bios. After wrestling with windows for 8 hours, I gave up on my dualboot intentions and just erased the whole thing and installed Antergos linux. The trackpad issue remains a problem and really gets in the way of my productivity. After searching and reading more reviews specifically about trackpad performance, it seems that Asus laptops have this issue across all of their Zenbooks going back to 2011. The only fix Ive seen suggested is to remove the casing and tape a piece of tinfoil between the battery and trackpad. I think Id rather just return the laptop and get my $1,500 (included 4 year warranty). There are plenty of other comparable machines at the $1,200 to $1,500 price point. I can get myself a MacBook Air for that price!

I love this laptop. Its the perfect student laptop for those in engineering or demanding fields. I run virtual machines daily, play light games, and mess around on Reddit and YouTube with this laptop. Its great. However, the trackpad has SERIOUS issues. The trackpad will lag at the worst times and make the cursor jump around like crazy. It works most of the time, but the lag will happen every 5-10 minutes. Get a wireless mouse and save yourself the trouble. If you can deal with a buggy trackpad, this is the perfect laptop for you. UPDATE: There is a fix below in the comments that helps make the trackpad work much better. Also personal fixes I did that helped: * Turned off anything to do with tapping (single, double, multi select taps off)

Hello to anyone who is even considering to buy an asus product! I bought the most expensive deluxe version of the zenbook only 5 months ago. Yesterday the screen just stopped working. Since I bought this laptop when it was a new product, when I made the purchase all of the reviews were good. Yesterday when I looked into the page of the product I found out about 30% of the customers who bought this version has the same issue. The screen just stopped working after few months. Trackpad: No tracking issue at all out of the box, glass surface. Satisfactory Keyboard: Comfy to type on. Satisfactory COIL WHINE: It does exist on my unit. But, I went to ASUS retail store in China Mainland (China offers FN model instead of FA) and was not able to hear any coil whine even with my ear lying on the top left corner, which is the main reason I decide to purchase it from amazon (simply because I need 16g of RAM). I understand that there is always a risk of having a coil whining unit if one purchases an ultrabook. But overall, I am not satisfied with it because it is audible in a completely quite environment (perhaps the quiet floor of a library) and I was expecting it to be able to kept the same as the display unit at the retail store that I previously saw. Speaker: I was not expecting any problems with the speaker as it was rated as pretty decent by D2D and other Amazon customers. However, when my unit is playing music on YouTube with pretty high volume, there is some kind of electric sound. I would think that it has got some relation with the coil whine but I am not entirely sure. I am going to make a dual boot system and will update this review if I have encountered any problems. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————— UPDATES Speaker issue and coil whine have gone to a acceptable level after a Windows update, which is quiet nice. You can not hear coil whine in a completely quiet environment unless you lay your ears on the top left corner of the keyboard. Tracking and tapping however, misses sometimes, but it resume to good tracking after locking and log-in again. It happens one time at around 10 hours of normal use and is easy to fix, so I am ok with that. I made a dual boot of Ubuntu + Windows. On Ubuntu, the speaker does not work at all because the Realtek driver is not working. A fix has been introduced by Jian-Hong and you can get the speaker working on Ubuntu if you re-compile the newest kernel. The thing that bugs me though, is that on Ubuntu all the multimedia keys are only accessible by using Fn key. The fn+esc mechanism does not work on Ubuntu. My Dell laptop without the Fn lock can use multimedia keys directly.

Very disappointed by Asus, I had high hopes for this computer. Lets start with the positive aspects first: The laptop is beautiful and razor thin. The 14 inch screen in the 13 inch body is beautiful and wide, colors are vibrant. The hinge seems to be solid, and overall the build quality is excellent. This is a well crafted laptop with high quality materials on the outside. Battery seems to last 6-ish hours of normal use (web browsing, wifi on, screen brightness at 30%) which is barely acceptable, but not deal-breaker for me. Performance wise the 8th gen quad core is blazing fast, and handles everything you throw at it with ease. The capacity of 512gb ssd is quite comfortable, and runs as fast as youd expect it to. 16GB of RAM is plenty for all demanding task light heavy photo editing, or coding and manipulating large data sets. It has plenty of ports for a laptop this sleek (1 jack, 2 thunderbolt, 1 usb-c), and the adapter usb-c to hdmi or usb is a welcome addition. Now the bad: I dont know if I got a lemon, but the laptop I got ran very hot! When plugged in, the upper right area (near the plug) was super hot and it was nearly uncomfortable to hold it on my lap. If running in battery, the laptop does feel warm but it is acceptable. However, CPU temperatures on the battery with nothing on except light browsing (chrome, light web reading, no videos) average 60-70 degrees Celsius, with some spikes at 80. Running slightly more demanding tasks such as opening google maps with a satellite view suddenly shoots temperatures in the 90s. This wouldnt be a problem if the hardware was designed to sustain such temperatures, except that the big drawback is the fan that is constantly running; when the laptop is idle, it is running half-speed which I measured was around 48dB. Open a web browser and the fan kicks in, constantly running full speed. It is quite distracting, I wonder what Asus engineers were thinking as I have never heard a laptop making that much noise on the long run for such light tasks. Plug in the charger and you basically have a plane engine on your lap, with noise levels averaging 60-70 dB. Dont get me wrong: having fans running full speed is ok when temporarily running demanding tasks. But having your fans constantly running full speed just because you opened a web browser is unacceptable. I really wanted to keep this laptop and tried getting used to the fan blowing up that much, but I couldnt. The so called liquid-crystal polymer cooling fan seems to be more of a marketing fluke than a real innovation. This is really unacceptable for a 1700$ laptop. Again, I do not know if I received a lemon, and would be willing to change my review if I was provided with another model that doesnt have a fan that noisy.

It was time to replace an older Asus laptop which Ive been very happy with, so choosing another Asus was easy but exactly which one is hard as there are so many choices. I wanted something that would be responsive and at the same time have great endurance, be thin and light. Gaming isnt necessary on this laptop, instead the improved endurance is welcome. This laptop is really awesome and I def would recommend it. Its an Intel i7 8th Gen and its fast, the ssd makes it virtually instant. I did find that the stand by feature is flaky and often chewing up most of my battery overnight when closed. In the windows power settings I changed standby to hibernate when the lid is closed or has no activity for X minutes. Now I can close the lid and I can open it up days later and see a very small loss in battery...

I took a big risk buying this machine, based on the critical Amazon reviews regarding the trackpad, but I had a feeling there would be a fix from the manufacturer. My bet paid off! Went to Asus.com to seek solutions, and with a simple firmware update, the jumpiness of the trackpad was gone, and I was left with an otherwise excellent laptop. Ive always been a big Asus fan, so when these sleek, new, uniquely hued, machines came out just as I was seeking a replacement for my 6-year-old previous ZenBook, I jumped at the opportunity to buy one. SO very glad I did, because this is such a lovely device. I was a little skeptical of the color and new build, but it has certainly grown on me, and I get compliments frequently. Perhaps the hardest thing to get used to, and maybe a con if youre a big accessories fan, is that with the tiny bezel around the screen, theres no need for much vertical length on the machine, so its *much* more rectangular than the laptops you might be used to. This means that the sleeve that comes with this laptop is one of the few snug-fitting protective accessories youll be able to find. I havent used this machine for much heavy-duty work yet, but I will update this review once Ive downloaded and used Adobe Creative Suite on it, and report on its handling of some of these juggernaut programs. That being said, everything I *have* run has been great. The speeds to load are fantastic, and the loaded version of Windows does well on the machine. Some of my favorite features: The backlit keyboard with multiple brightness settings The function-lock options (notably absent on past Asus models, which was annoying) The light-up number pad (more a party trick than anything, but is actually pretty useful when I *do* need to take on some number crunching) The battery life - WOW. Charges fully in about 1.5 hours, and Ive gotten it to last up to NINE hours on that charge The aesthetic - This machine is gorgeous, and nobody is going to deny that. The slim bezels, the overall thin profile, the blue and gold color... its just so dang pretty. I was certainly disappointed with *how* jumpy the touchpad was at first, but with the simple fix and the excellent machine youre left with after, this is a great deal on a lovely machine. PS: I havent experienced the coil whine so many users here have talked about. Im on the machine in a silent room now, for instance, and all I can hear is my own typing. *shrug*

Laptop came very well to me I didn’t have any issues with it the only complain is battery life is only 3.5 or 4 hours maximum and for that price the battery should be much better there’s a lot of laptops that have much better battery than this but in terms or quality material is excellent is lightweight but the and the screen is great almost bezel less and face recognition is great but sometimes it don’t go well and it is very quiet the fans I don’t have any complain for that if guys are looking for a great laptop for that price get this one but if you’re looking for battery you should other laptops but I’m very happy with this laptop I give it 4.5 stars Update: Battery sucks dont buy this if you want a great battery get another laptop not this one!!!

Its a really good laptop to have. overall specs and design is great! only problem is with the trackpad, like the previous comments stated, it doesnt really work. It just jumps around most of the time therefore actually killing the point of having the lit up keypad on the trackpad. But if you dony really mind then i guess u can just buy a wireless mouse, that fixes the problem.
