Sleek and modern with a large 1080p screen, this is a great choice for watching movies, running office apps, or games that are not GPU/CPU demanding. Its obvious a lot of thought went into the details. The USB ports can be used for charging, theres one USB 2, two USB 3.1 and one USB C 3.1 port. Wired and wireless networking (using the newest ac wireless standard), fingerprint reader, large touchpad, full sized keyboard AND a numeric keyboard. Its NOT VR compatible, so if you have a wired headset dont look at this laptop to support your rig. You also cant play CPU and GPU demanding games - the raw power is not there. Facebook gameroom runs fine, but Frostpunk was a nightmare - I was hitting 3 fps pretty quick. I had zero problems watching any video, even really high bitrate files that took up over 20 gig, either from internal or external storage. And speaking of gig - space is limited. Theres a 256 (224 gig actual) gig NVMe drive. Its decently fast and uses little power. But thats it. The laptop will accept a second SSD internally - a bracket is included. It has to be installed by an authorized service center. Do it yourself and the warranty is voided. The built-in SSD is a Kingston NVMe 1.2. After the speed test the temperature was 34C. When not under load its around 31C. Drive speed: Crystal Disk Mark on the system drive (MB/s): Seq Q32T1: 1565 read, 880 write 4KIB Q32T1: 276 read, 200 write On an external MVMe attached to the USB C port: Seq Q32T1: 438 read, 435 write 4KIB Q32T1: 150 read, 135 write Small files transfer fast, but large files seem to be a problem. On my desktop on the same external drive on a USB 3.1 port. Seq Q32T1: 750 read, 830 write, 4KIB Q32T1: 88 read, 81 write. The laptop was unresponsive while reading and writing large files. I thought it was locked up, but I just needed to wait for the file to finish transferring. The internal NVMe drive is decently fast. Its about 250% faster than a traditional SSD, but not close to the top speeds available. For example, my desktop NVMe is Seq Q32T1: 3456 read, 2774 write - thats over 200% faster on read and over 350% faster on write than the Aspire 5. The laptop SSD is plenty fast for most users and is fine for this laptop. Boot up is so fast its amazing. One thing I REALLY appreciated - minimum bloat. Booking dot com was pinned to the taskbar, and Amazon, evernote and MS solitaire collection were the only bloat I found. The antivirus included is Norton Security Ultra.

The Acer Aspire 5 is a nice little laptop. I think it is perfect for the average student (high school or college) or for the home. Set-up is really easy. It is lightweight and fits into the average laptop bag. This makes it convenient and easy to carry or travel with. The screen size (15.6) is nice and the resolution clear (1060 HD). There are several ports: USB, Type C and HDMI. There is no CD reader, which is fine because most laptops don’t come with that anymore anyway. Most people just use a USB. There is 8GB of memory. Once charged, the battery life is decent. The sound quality from the built-in speakers is decent, so listening to videos or music is great. There is also one feature of this computer that I really like. It has fingerprint technology which adds an extra layer of security. Now, the two things that I would change about this computer: additional memory and make it a touch screen. First, why not have more memory out of the box versus having to add some later. AND don’t most screens today come with touch technology? I think that would be an awesome feature. However, for the cost, this computer has a decent amount of bang for the buck. It is affordable, lightweight and can do a lot, especially for students. And since my son will be entering his freshman year this fall, I will probably let him take this laptop.

The Acer Aspire 5, 15.6" Full HD IPS Display, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8265U, 8GB DDR4, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, Backlit Keyboard, Fingerprint Reader, Windows 10 Home, A515-54-51DJ does a good job at a good price. It has plenty of processing power for most uses, and a beautiful 1080 HD picture. The sound could be a little higher quality and louder, but its adequate. The bezel is relatively narrow for the 15.6" screen, but its still a nice size computer. Its a little heavy, and sleek enough, but definitely not ultra thin. It has a small power adapter, thats easy to transport. The HDMI connection is better than all the alternatives. The silver metallic exterior looks great, and the bezel is black plastic. I appreciate the number keypad, saving a lot of time instead of hunting the numbers at the top of a keyboard. The backlit keyboard is another convenient feature. There may be some confusion about whether there is a touch screen, and it does not have a touch screen. Overall, a good product.

I was able to get this laptop for my 18 year old daughter so that she can take it to college with her. We love everything about the laptop but its battery life. The battery doesnt last long at all. She is only getting about 2.5 hours of battery life so shes been just keeping it plugged in. The laptop has also been overheating when she plays The Sims 4. The Sims 4 isnt a very graphics intensive game but this laptop can only handle her playing four about thirty minutes without the fan getting extremely loud. I dont recommend playing graphic intensive games on this computer. My daughter isnt really a PC gamer but really loves playing the Sims 4. The computer works well especially the fingerprint reader. My daughter will be using it mostly for school. Overall its a good computer except for the battery life. If youre looking for a laptop with good battery life, I suggest looking elsewhere.
