Loved this mouse, and the scroll wheel too, at first. You can click it side-to-side to, but unfortunately this feature is not customizable (why?) like the other buttons, so it only does horizontal scrolling (which youll rarely use if ever). Dont have to use a mouse pad, the tracking is good, the buttons work fine, and the small shape is nice. Unfortunately, the soft rubber "tire" on the scroll wheel degrades over time and eventually ruins the middle button. First, the rubber itself sticks to every kind of dirt and debris, and cleaning it just makes it worse (towel lint). Eventually (several months) the texture gets rough and small rubber pieces come off. Then it gets loose (I guess stretched out) and comes off the wheel, preventing the wheel from turning and clicking properly. The only solution is to cut the rubber off and use the bare wheel (uncomfortable, but works).

Just received my new WMM4K from Amazon - been using these little critters for years and generally replacing them when I lose dongles. This was the first replacement I recall for one thats stopped working. Well, this one works great -- but the chassis has been severely cost-reduced. Overall heft is somewhat lighter, the rubberized sides feel cheaper and the top plastic feels cheaper. Buttonpress has a cheaper feel too. Im sure itll work about the same but just doesnt feel quite so nice in the hand. WHY MUST YOU COST-REDUCE THIS STUFF, MANUFACTURERS?! Id gladly pay an extra $5 for the same quality to which Ive become accustomed. Two stars because the thing still seems to work well... but Im pretty sure it wont last as many years as did its predecessor.

This mouse is perfectly fine if you hold it to the standard of a "budget" product. The feel is fine, but there are several minor issues that make it feel flimsy and low quality. The primary issue is the mouse wheel. As noted in other reviews, the wheel can be "lumpy" which causes it to be difficult to smoothly turn. You can clearly feel how uneven it is just by putting your finger on it as it turns. Another note is that the mouse wheel button will press down as much as a millimeter before it reaches the click point, as if it is loose. Also, the battery cover on the bottom is very poorly designed and its a little too hard to put it back on properly. Its like one of those pathetic covers from the 1980s where if you dont put it on perfectly, it sticks out. One other thing I notice when looking at the reviews and pictures online, is that the standard mouse should in fact come with a hologram on the bottom, but mine does not have one. This suggests that it is in fact a counterfeit. The bottom line is that within seconds of using this mouse, it was clear that something was "off". It works, and it has the makings of a decent mouse, but Im taking it back for something better built.

Update: After a few months of using this mouse, it became apparent that I got one of the cheap Chinese rip-offs, and less than a year later Im having to shop for a new mouse. Ive used the previous models of this Microsoft mouse for years, they are all still running strong, so I dont know what to do with this review. If this were the legit Microsoft mouse, I would maintain the initial 5 star review I put up, but if you get the knock-off, its a 2 star mouse, at best. I am so angry with this knock-off that I am giving up on Microsoft mice. I hope Microsoft is reading this, counterfeit products just lost you a customer. If you get the version with the Chinese characters on the bottom label, return it! See the other reviews here that say the same, theyre legit, the bad mouse is NOT worth the money. I tried to stick it out, what a waste of time and money. Original: (first week with mouse) This is exactly the fairly simple everyday mouse I have been looking for. Ive had higher model number Microsoft mice for a while now, theyre pretty great for a couple years and then they start to wear out, lose connection and power and stuff, but well worth it for a heavy user like myself. This new mobile mouse 4000 is so pleasant to use, just a solid, no-fuss mouse that works smoothly on every surface Ive tried it on. Think Ill buy another as backup, ready to roll in a couple years when this one wears out. Also, gamers and graphic artists, this is not a super sensitive or precise mouse, itll work, but you best keep looking if youre serious about what you do.
