Happy to say I feel I got my moneys worth! While not terribly expensive, its still a good chunk of change, so I was a bit nervous when I ordered this lens. I took a few test shots and immediately became a fan! It was even better than I had hoped. The range of 18-400mm in one lens is a huge plus for someone who likes to travel light and have a little extra reach, which is exactly what I needed in a lens. It weighs about what I expected and I dont consider 1lb 13 oz. to be an issue, but I have seen others whine about it. Fit and finish is excellent, focus ring is smooth as is zoom. the switches for lock, VC and auto focus are conveniently located. I have included 2 shots, 1 at 18mm and the other at 400mm, Nikon D7100, iso 200, f22, aperture priority, manual focus, matrix metered, tripod and remote shutter. the spots you see in the upper left are dust on the sensor. These shots are "Fine Quality" .jpg format right out of the camera, no processing what so ever. Proper raw file/processing will bring out even more detail and color, but I can see by jpgs, this lens will do just fine. The shots were taken about 4 in the afternoon. the hill in the foreground is a bit less than a 1/2 mile out, the antenna towers are a good 10 miles away (give or take). This lens now replaces my old Tamron 28-300mm (which was a favorite), and it is better in every respect! Judge for your self, but I think it was worth every penny!

I dont usually write reviews, but I just returned this lens. I was using it primarily for amateur bird photography, but I personally found it was not sharp enough to use on a regular basis. I have a Nikon D3300 Camera, and already use a Nikon 55-300mm VR lens. I was hoping this lens would be an improvement on the 55-300mm lens, but the results were too fuzzy and required impeccable settings to nail a shot. On the 55-300mm lens, I can put it on "running man mode" or a basic manual aperture of 7 and the camera will adapt to decent quality whether the bird flies in the shade or flies out onto a sunny fence post --I always got sharp shots. Not the case with this lens, any automatic setting resulted in extreme fuzziness for me. Plus I wasnt convinced the results were even a full 33% closer on the 400m compared to the Nikon 55-300mm lens, it felt more like this lens was 350mm, not 400mm. This lens did perform well at F11 and a steady hand, and if you dont need to zoom into your photos at all it performs well. However for my needs of walking around with a lens and being able to take a quick action shot, and crop the photo on the the subject, it did not perform at all. I dont like writing negative reviews, and its its possible I just wasnt using the settings correctly, but I wouldnt recommend this lens for wildlife or action photography. See the two photos below of an example of the photo quality --not quite sharp enough for me to spend $600. Hope this review was helpful!

Purchased this for happy go lucky travel lens. This is way sharper than the 55-200 Nikon I have. Just started having fun with it. Bokeh is great, sharpness at larger focal length is great too. See the images for yourself. I will post further updated this weekend after the balloon festival shoot and one more later in 2nd week of October. As of now, I am very happy for the purchase. Took this to Balloon fest in plano TX, in the evening. As light gets Dim, this is not at all a lens you want. It wont focus at longer focal length but you can use manual focus. For day light, it is defiitely sharper than 55-200 or 55-300 kit lens . Update Oct 10 2017 I will have the pictures to say more than the words.. Adding few more. Enjoying the lens to thw fullest.. Taking landscape is fun with this lens.

I am not a professional at photography, but I have enjoyed taking amateur photos for many years as a hobby. I mounted this lens system on a Nikon D5300 camera and conducted a series of experiments to verify the lens system worked properly. I can report everything worked properly and I was able to take very good pictures with it over its operating range of magnification and I can verify the switches on it worked also. I was somewhat nervous about buying it because of the cost, but now I am glad I did and I can honestly recommend it and I now believe I can confidently use this lens system for nearly all my photography with this camera.

I do a lot of action photography, the first time I used it was to shoot a mud obstacle course event and the lens worked flawlessly. The zoom was fast and the pictures came out great. Would recommend this lens. Can’t wait to use it for portraits and macro next.

Very nice lens for general purpose use. The autofocus is very quiet and pictures are very sharp. Used with a Nikon D3200 body. You may need to be a little more precise on your exposure than you are used to if your are using manual exposure settings. One nice feature is the ability to lock the lens a specific zoom. The VC seems to compensate nicely to hand holding at shutter speeds of 80-100 indoors. A couple of caveats not specific to the lens: when using the on camera flash watch where your had is. Also, adding filters and a lens hood may cause vignetting a very wide angles. Also, the lens is likely to be heavier than a 55-200 zoom so it could be more tiring to hold for extended periods of time. But this lens is likely to replace two lens with one very capable one.

Pretty happy with this lens so far. Got it to pair with my new Nikon D7500 for my every day lens. Had a sigma 18-200 but wanted the extra reach. I will echo what other reviews have said that it gets a bit stiff zooming past about 50mm or so but with use it has loosened up. Auto focus is a bit off from time to time, especially when fully zoomed and sometimes I have to zoom back out to correctly focus on the subject but so far this has been very minimal and usually only in windy conditions.

Bought this to replace two kit lenses for a Nikon D3200, plus to get the extra zoom. I love having the range from 18mm to 400mm in a single lens to photograph a youth sports or wildlife and landscapes. Photo 1 @ 200mm @ 1/2 mile distance Photo 2 @ 400mm @ 1/2 mile distance Photo 3 @ 200mm Photo 4 @ 400mm Photos 5 & 6 @ 400mm

Just got it today. Initial impressions are it feels well made and image quality seems to be pretty good. However this is not a true 400mm lens. My nikon 70-300 will get closer to objects than this so called 400mm lens. Thats a big let down and will probably be the reason I return this lens. Not sure if this is some marketing crap from tamaron or juts false info.

I purchased this lens when I purchased my new camera for a trip to Alaska. Since I was going to be gone for a couple weeks, I didnt want to have to pack multiple lenses. This one lens did the trick. It was great to be able to take those close up pictures, but also be able to zoom to 400 to capture those long distance moments without the need to change my lens. It has a lock feature that came in handy as I wore the camera around my neck preventing the lens from slowly coming out. Great value and must have.
