This lens is amazing! The bokeh is creamy and focusing is amazing debated the Zeiss or this decided to go the “cheap” route usually I regret it but the images coming from this are amazing! Still using this lens and A7iii with amazing results !

Super creamy bokeh, fast, accurate, silent focus. Lightweight, portable, a real pleasure. Note: the focus hold button is not customizable with the A7. Used to own Fuji, Canon and Nikon equivalents, was pleased but not as impressed as I am with this lens. Highly recommended lens, great price. All attached photos taken wide-open, straight out of the camera.

Review below Pros & Cons. Pros - Decent price point Near silent focusing Solid build (feels sturdy/solid) Great image quality, great for portrait work with its depth of field abilities. Sharp, fast focus Awesome low light performance + shadow recovery Cons - Lens is pretty big. It does look more "professional"(than 28-70mm), but might be a little bulky for walking around all day with. NOT stabilized. No OSS in the lens. Wasnt a deal breaker for me, and I havent noticed any unwanted motion blur yet, even in very low light. Not really a con, (should be expected), but I feel it might be worth mentioning - This lens is fixed at 85mm, which is a flattering focal length for peoples faces, but its not going to allow you much flexibility. Wont ever effect you if youre shooting outside or in a place where you can take a few steps back from your subject. But I could see it becoming an issue trying to shoot in a tight space. This lens will definitely not work well for something like indoor real estate photography, which isnt its intended use anyway. This shouldnt surprise anyone, but this is my first prime lens and it takes a little time to get used to. Overall review - I wanted a prime lens, specifically to do portraits and low light photography with. Was looking for something I could get nice soft out of focus backgrounds, smooth bokeh, and sharp focus on my subject. Ive been nothing but impressed with this lenss performance so far. If you want a lens around this focal length, and the Batis and G Master are out of your price range, this will be your best option. Bought this as my first prime/fixed focal length lens for my Sony a7. Only been able to shoot with it a few times so far, but right away I was impressed with the sharpness and image quality. The other two lenses I own are the 28-70 kit lens that comes with the a7, and the 35mm macro lens. The 85mm f/1.8 is noticeably sharper throughout the frame than the 28-70. The 85mm allows you to blur backgrounds to a nice smooth, creamy out of focus. Great bokeh, pretty smooth and round. I did see that sometimes the bokeh will look more football shaped than round, but Ive been able to capture perfectly circle bokehs as well. One of the main reasons I got this lens was for the f/1.8. The 28-70 is f/3.5, which really didnt allow me to do the style of low light photography I wanted to do. Ive shot around/after sunset with the 85mm 3 times now, and the performance is great. I use Adobe Lightroom to edit, and Ive been really impressed with the shadow recovery with the 85mm lens. I was able to expose to the darkening sky after sunset, with my subject almost completely black, and still recover that subject in post by bringing up the shadows. I might upload some before/after images as examples if I get around to it.

Fantastic Lens. Awesome price. I love this lens! Was using on a6300. Dope! Just such a nice lens and focal length on aps-c. Recently graduated to a7RIII... Loving this lens on the RIII! Looking forward to getting premium glass in the future for the RIII, but so far, this lens has been a great joy. Customized the focus hold button to do eyeAF. Its like having an autofocus lazer in your hands with that button! Really useful and fun at the same time. Awesome image renderings. No lens is perfect... This lens is no exception. But it definitely deserves a five star in my book. Premium feel. Highly recommended. Using for events, portraiture, and recently my buddys car.

I recently got into photography and discovered I enjoy street photography. Shots are colorful, very sharp, and almost all in focus. I sometimes use photos directly with a little straightening. Autofocus is fast and accurate. For portraits vs 135mm, the background compression is still nice and I can stand reasonably close to give instructions. Low light performance is amazing with the f1.8 aperture especially if youve only ever used f4 or even f2.8. Youll feel like youve now got night vision on your camera The build is solid, not too hefty and not too long with its hood on. If youre gonna walk with it on your camera a shoulder or neck strap is going to better vs a wrist strap. For its price, this lens goes a long way and I can recommend it with no reservations. Pair it with a wider focal length and youre good to go.

Easy to take very sharp photos. Great value for the money. I am a long time Canon user with L series Canon lenses so I am used to good lenses and this lens is sharper and super quality. Yes, I have gone from Canon to a Sony A7rii, and the camera and this lens is phenomenal.

I just got this lens last weekend, love it so far. I own the a6300 and a6000, my setup includes the 18-105G, 70-300 G, 50mm FE 1.8, and now this beast, the 85mm FE 1.8. It is obviously not a G Master 85mm, but this lens is sharp as a tack wide open at f1.8. If you are looking for an affordable 85mm, for either your FF or APS-C e-mount Sony body, you cannot go wrong with this lens.

Very sharp lens. The focus by wire is much better here than with other Sony lenses. I think the MF/AF implementation and follow focus buttons might be a requirement for any future lenses I buy--very useful, and this lens is functionally way more useful than my Zeiss 55. Its also faster to interface with my A7III; the AWB on my Zeiss 55 took a couple of seconds to figure out what to correct for. From what Ive seen, the Zeiss Batis isnt much sharper and has less functionality (but it has OSS), and the 1.4 GM is a professional lens that costs 3x as much. This is an awesome lens for the money.

I bought this for the fast aperture and the focal length, and have not been disappointed. The lens is the ideal focal length for portraits, and the fast aperture allows shots to be captured in poor light. Its also a great medium telephoto for travel - Im taking it along with my 24-105G on an upcoming trip abroad and it should be perfect for street portraits and even some landscape shots if I frame them right. All in all, the best lens out there for the price.

For many Sony photographers, this 85mm is the go-to 85mm in Sony’s lineup. Yes, there is the Batis and the G Master, but for the money, this lens is incredible. But that’s not the whole story. Even if it were a few hundred dollars more expensive, it would still be a great lens. It pairs well with my Sony A6500, and surely goes well with the A7 lineup of camera bodies too. The bokeh and depth of field (background blur) at f1.8 is beautiful and has that smooth blurriness that makes pro portraits so great. Perhaps you have the kit lens that came with your Sony camera. If you have been wanting your photos to look more "professional", feel held back by the kit lens, and you understand aperture and depth of field, this lens will get you there. It has the button on the barrel, but I dont use it. Many people use it for eye autofocus. When I purchased the a6500 camera body, I skipped all other lenses and picked up this one first. I am very happy I did, because my style of photography is mostly portraits.
