This teleconverter is perfect for that extra bit of reach on the 70-200mm GM. There really doesnt seem to be any downside to using this teleconverter like I thought there might be. The 70-200mm becomes an amazingly sharp 98-280mm f/4 lens. Note that with this teleconverter you lose a single stop of light, as the maximum aperture on this lens goes from a constant f/2.8 to an f/4.0, but with the incredible low-light/high ISO performance of the a9 that I have attached, this difference is negligible. The depth of field shooting wide open at f/4 is comparable to what you get at f/2.8 without the adapter. I recently shot a girls soccer game with this lens, and I really appreciated the extra reach this teleconverter allows. If you are a pixel peeper, thent he sharpness will be the most surprising part. I have used other teleconverters on my Canon lenses, and I always noticed a slight image quality hit. Not so with this one. Its like having two entirely different lenses. at my disposal. Autofocus using the teleconverter feels instantaneous on the a9. I shot much of the game with AF-C and Wide Focus Mode with Face Detection turned on, and it rarely missed focus. When it did, it was only for maybe 1-2 frames out of the 20fps it shot, and it was during heavy action in the game. I dont regret buying this teleconverter at all. Now, Im looking at the 2x one for just that little bit more reach. Of course, with that one, Ill lose 2 stops of light, but with the a9, it shouldnt matter too much.

I purchased mine from B&H during a sale they had a while back but wanted to leave a quick review for those who are doing their research. This is indeed a great accessory and adds so much versatility to whichever lens you are using it with. However, it is important to note that this teleconverter works with the three following Sony lenses: SEL70200GM, SEL100400GM, SEL400F28GM per Sonys website. This is due to the black, rubber extension on the lens side of the teleconverter not fitting into the base of many other lenses. Something to keep in mind.
