I thought I was getting by using my old canon 50mm 1.4 with metabones adapter and manual focusing on my A7R. In fact, I think theres no better camera for manually focusing than the Sony A7 series. But with shallow apertures and the frankly awful chroma of most canon lenses, it can be a real nightmare. BUT, it got the job done, so I figured my money was better spent on other glass. But, finally I had enough with missing shots and decided I needed an AF solution and so I finally bit the bullet and purchased the FE 55mm. GOODNESS this lens is amazing. Sure the A7R doesnt have the best AF system, but apparently that doesnt matter when shooting with this lens because I have yet to have a missed shot (I cant wait to see how this lens works on the A7RII). Images are crisp, resolution is SUBLIME, and the chroma is non-existent. This is my second A7 Zeiss lens (also own 24-70) and while the performance of the 24-70 is good, this 55mm crushes. Bottom line, I was very skeptical of paying almost $1k on a 50mm prime, especially since I already owned the oldy but goody Canon 50mm 1.4, but until you actually use this lens, you just dont know what youre missing out on. It turns out canon lenses are just not good enough for 36+mp cameras. Frankly, from now on any new lens purchase for my A7 is going to be Zeiss or nothing. PS: Ive also used the canon 50mm 1.2 for commercial work and while it is a very fun lens to shoot with, it still doesnt hold a candle to the sharpness, color and resolution of the Zeiss 55. Red rings on lenses are certainly cool and all, but blue badges are even cooler :)

love this lens. bokah is excellent, even on auto. i did find that i need a filter (ND and polarize) outside so I can retain the bokah, otherwise bokah is less when outside (just my learning experience). I am novice and I use my camera on auto, yes, auto. it was purchased only for capturing photos of my child indoors with low light, however, I can see this lens doing so much more. I know now that i need a 35mm so i dont have to move so far away to capture my child (another learning experience). I recommend this for any person who wants to take portraits and who can be at least 7 feet away from their target. even though this mm size doesnt work well for me indoors (because of my proximity to my subject), the lens itself takes beautiful photos. heres some photos that i took on auto focus.

Just came in the mail yesterday, it did not disappoint one bit. I use the A7Sii, this thing has absolutely no trouble shooting in the dark or shooting lights directly, worth every dollar. I can see the dirt on your eyelashes with this thing, seriously. The bokeh is very very nice and it picks up color very nicely, every picture is vibrant effortlessly. A true upgrade for my budding videography business. I read at least 20 reviews before this purchase, and I researched heavily before purchasing this lens and 2 others for my business. I came across several ‘Top/Best Sony Lens’ lists, every single one of those lists mentioned this lens in the top. It’s often compared to true Zeiss lenses, which usually run a couple thousand each. The lens performs like a lens of 3x the cost, I am in love with every aspect of this lens, the price, the clarity, the design, and the reassurance that Zeiss helped design it. Buy this lens, today. Im a videographer, but I plan to start charging people for pictures with this thing.

This lens is cheaply made and not even Germany or Japan but price is close to a leica ? Sharpness is not everything, I hope one day everybody will get that ... You can get 10 great vintage lenses better than this lens with the price of 1 55 1.8 ...Photography is a very challenging area and lately extremely hard to make money ... I am against capitalist mindsets

This is the lens that all the reviewers rave about for good reason. I am not a pro and usually use a zoom if a picture looks in focus I am usually happy. This is the first lens I have ever used that I could really see a difference. It really is sharper then a normal zoom and it looks it in the pictures it takes.. I also found it worked in most cases for a walking around lens if I need a little more reach I can just crop the picture. it is so light it feels like there is no lens on the camera. Well worth the price.

The hype isn’t just hype. This lens performs beauitfully on my a6500 and A7Riii. I’ve shot for multiple clients with this lens and it’s very sharp all the way to the edges, produces great color, and the CA is well controlled. Build quality is top notch. I would highly recommend this great lens to anyone looking to up their nifty fifty game

Fast lens. This is a very sharp lens with a wonderful feel to the photos. Something like my old 50mm Elmar for my Laica. And I never thought I would say this, but it is as sharp as my Leica Summicron 50mm f2 lens - which I consIder the best in the world. It now sits on my Sony a7 full time since I got it.

I was worried that the lens would not come in time but I received it at my door within 4 days of ordering (earlier than the expected date given). Lens was inside original Sony packaging (also includes a mini protective bag) which was all cushioned in a larger box. Everything looks great and as the other reviews say, the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 is amazing (got it for the A7iii)!

Love this lens. It performs well, and has amazing sharpness. It takes great portraits and has a nice depth of field. It focuses quickly, and with how small and light it is, it is great for travel. I use this quite a bit, and would recommend it for anyone looking for a prime lens in the 50mm range. In short, I love this.

Bought this for my fathers Sony A7. He has been trying to get good with it and I took a few shots with it. Its super sharp and some very good portraits. I think overall he is also quite satisfied!
