Regarded as one of the sharpest lenses for any platform. Its really that incredible. If youre using this on an APS-C body just be aware that your effective field of view will be around 82mm. This is the one lens that I dont think will ever leave my bag. Its razor sharp across the entire frame at nearly all apertures, its terrific for portraits on FF or APS-C, its bokeh is creamier than your grandmothers best soup!

This lens has all the great Zeiss hallmarks - wonderful build quality and SUPERB optical performance. At F 1.8, the micro contrast and sharpness is astounding, There is definitely a 3D pop to my subjects I have not experienced before. I came from a Nikon D600 and a Nikon 50 1.4G lens and I believe the combo of the A7 and Zeiss 55 handily beats out the Nikon combo. Since Ive had this lens, I havent really felt the need to mount anything else on my Sony A7. If you have a Sony A7 series camera and can afford this lens - do yourself a huge favor and buy it!

For what it is, it is worth the money. If you are thinking about getting a prime lens for the Sony E-mount cameras, I would recommend this lens. This lens is nice and sharp. Too bad they didn’t integrate the shot stability button for non a7/a9 bodies, but that’s not something I need to worry about since I have have mine mounted to an a7riii. Otherwise, it would be near perfect imho. @brycek96_photography

One thing I see often in comments from reviews are people complaining about a price for a 55mm f/1.8 lens. Oddly enough they complain with zero experience with the lens. I just purchased this lens on amazon and it arrived in time for a wedding I shot just yesterday. It performed brilliantly. 95% of my shots were done wide open at f/1.8 and almost 100% of the images were in focus, minus a few that were from user error (accidentally switched off auto iso, resulting in a slower shutter speed indoors). The lens at 1.8 is so sharp, its quite refreshing and locks on focus quickly. I had no problems at all with auto focus though I will say my 5d3 did focus faster indoors. But the a7 and 55 still performed well. Outdoors at around 4pm with the sun at a beautiful spot, shooting was almost too good. My primary use for this lens is to get nice bokeh and and I couldnt be happier. In some instances, it has this quality about it that I cant explain but have always read about. I guess its a Zeiss thing (my first and definitely not last). So I would say, if this is in your budget, you wont be disappointed with the quality of the images produced. Then add the fact that its weathered sealed, its definitely worth the price. My 50L is now up for sale.

My new favorite lens. Makes everything look better. Focuses fast on my A7s2. Its a bit hard to focus for video (manual), but I think thats more an issue with the Sony cameras LCD screen. I love the lens though. UPDATE: For video, the focus by wire is a hassle and its nearly impossible to rack focus. It takes me 4-5 attempts whereas with Canon lenses I could usually get within 1-2 times. (the focus by wire basically means the speed at which you move the focus ring will change how much the focus changes)

clearest and sharpest lens ive used yet..i think their is only one lens sharper than this that is made by either sony/ziess. the 90mm gm or whatever its called..so in terms of resolution itll keep up with an a7r, a7rii, a7riii. very fast lens..durable..i would recommend getting a uv filter but thats on you.

I recently started doing some studio photography, and got this lens as part of that endeavor. Its a stunningly good lens. Im not going to do a technical review, but I will say that you will not be disappointed in this lens. Im not even considering the new Sony 50mm f/1.4; the 2/3 stop improvement is insignificant, and Im completely satisfied with the performance of this lens. If you need a fast 50mm (approximately), give this lens a shot. Completely satisfied with this lens.

Used prices for this product are very fair for the quality of the lens. My main gripe with it is that I dont really love 55mm as a focal length. If you do, this lens can cover 90 percent of your needs, and the sharpness, contrast, and colors are outstanding. Its the base standard for optical performance in the Sony FF system.

The color reproduction is fantastic, as is the sharpness and overall quality of the lens. I really wanted a 35mm with a faster aperture but I chose this 55mm since its 1.8 and I wanted the ability to get more blur out of the backgrounds. I would agree with other reviews that this is a fantastic lens in terms on IQ (Image Quality), Build quality, etc.. and a great one to have in your bag.
