Solid but not too heavy, this lens gives good wide angle views, to a small zoom beyond standard 50mm, out to 70mm. It focuses well, and is good in all but very low light levels, though f/4 copes with most situations. I tried it at 70mm shooting sports when not too far from the subject (a tennis court), during day and night. Even at night I got good results with a fast shutter speed and shooting multiple images per second. A good all round lens that gives some good extra capability either side of a 50mm prime lens. So, many may consider it as a first lens, as I did, and thats all you need in your kit at the start - unless you need macro or decent zoom for wildlife. Thats for lens number two and three. If you can afford this instead of the Sony 28-70mm that often comes as a bundle with a Sony body, go for this one.

It was tough not giving this 5 stars because Zeiss hardly ever fails to deliver. I scrapped one star because corners are not sharp at 24 mm. I dont know if I got a bad copy or if this is the norm with this particular lens.

Im not a pixel peeper, so I cant speak to the technical aspects of the lens. What I can tell you, is that its a VERY useful lens for the A7s when recording video. I cant tell you anything about autofocus other than it works, because we are strictly manual focusing people. What I can tell you, is the footage from this lens is VERY clear and the color rendition is very nice. For years, Ive shot with nothing but prime lenses. This lens changed that. Mostly because its really handy in live situations (I do weddings) to change focal length on the fly. Probably the best thing about this lens is it has the OSS which is an absolute life saver when you are forced to shoot handheld. The other thing is with a few button presses (hopefully only one after sony issues a firmware update)...on the A7s anyway, you can also shoot in crop mode which makes this lens effectively more like a 35mm-100mm or so. This is a great option again for those of us who shoot live events like weddings. But the bottom line is this: Its better than the available kit lens, it has OSS that works and works very well with the Sony equipment. It doesnt require an adapter, and theres not really a lot of choice out there right now.... I dont think you can go wrong with the lens if youre shooting with an A7s, A7r, or A7. Ill also note that its a nice touch that it does still work the crop cameras too...which is nice as our backup camera is a NEX-6. ONE thing to note for video: If youre planning to use a follow focus. Forget it. You cant. The focus ring on this lens and most sony lenses is "drive by wire" for lack of a better word (theres probably a real term for it). What I mean by that is, the faster you turn it, the faster it changes focus. The slower, the slower it changes. Therefore, you cant repeat focus pulls like you can on a cinema lens. Of course, Ill note that I can pretty easily perform a smooth focus pull with my finger while hand holding, and the zoom is INCREDIBLY smooth for what I was expecting. Good luck.

It is my go to multi-purpose zoom lens. Great pictures and great color. I am not a professional photographer but the lens will perform better than most lenses out there. Wish it was a F2.8 rather than the F4 that it is. But it is still a great lens.

I shoot a lot of corporate events, landscapes, travel photos and portraits. This lens so far has proven to be my go to lens (alongside my prime ziese 35mm) Love it, image quality and range is also phenomenal!

Received the lens on Monday, just worked with is a couple of days now and its working just fine. Little down side but that was known it feels like plastic. Image quailty is very good, same distortion on the cornerrs but that can be fixed in Photoshop/Lightroom. Overall a good lens for everyday use.

Got mine used for 850 and it appeared new and now a year has past no problems. I recommend for all shooting, especially on the 7s which I have

Soft at the edges. Need to be careful of f-stop to get best resolution. Test the lens to find out where it gives best sharpness. Other than that, a great travel lens.

My 2nd go to lense when I’m traveling. The lens makes my photos look like I’m a professional photographer. I’m really impressed on how good this len makes my photos come out.

Awesome lens! I paired this with my Sony a7Rii and the photos are incredible. Very sharp, smooth focus, lightweight and sexy.
